cheapest, best value mp3 player?

I'm looking for a small mp3 player to use for skiing. I probably want 64mb or 128mb because they are cheaper, but it has to have an expansion slot for secure digital (i have a 128mb SD card i want to use). ANybody have any suggestions? what do you guys use?

dude seriously screw mp3 players..get a mini disc player holds up to 5 hours on each disk.. disks are 10 bucks for 5 discs usually and the cheapest MD is usually around 100$ for assony

MD are so sweet. Carrying and changing all those disc all the time. If you want to invest in a good product just buy an Ipod, you won't regret it.

I have a Rio Riot that I enjoy very much 200$ and it has 20GB - about 5000 songs and the battery lasts forever. It's hott - check it out. I haven't had any problems yet and I've seen all good reviews on it.

Yeah I use to want a MP3 player but then my friends told me to get a MD. And I love it so much! It can hold so much music. But if you want a ok, cheap MP3 player, get the RCA. I think 128 MB and its really really small.

creative muvo or muvo nx are great and they double as a pen drive no secure digital though just integrated 128 or 256

most people who've answered have totally ignored his requests.

For what you are looking for, the 128mb RCA Lyra is your best bet. It's expandable via SD so you can use you card, and it's super tiny. Only takes one AAA battery and gets good battery life.

It's currently on sale for $179.99 at Radioshack ;-)

thanks yeti and everyone else. This might sound really stupid but I don't even know how minidisk players work. Do they play mp3's or what kind of file format? Do they skip a lot (or at all) compared to mp3 players? how big are they? what kind of batteries do they generally use and how long do they last (this becomes an issue because skiing and listening all the time is going to use a lot of batteries)? Thanks in advance for any info.

dude dont get a mp3player get a minidisk with an mp3 you have to delete all the song if you want to change your list on most anyway and with mini disk player you can fit more music on it anyway and change it up easier and record from many more things all around its a better deal price included

what would you guys recommend for a good minidisk player? One that is reasonably cheap but also not too bad in quality.

I use a sony net MD player and i absolutely love it. Basically you get the player, a USB cable and some software such as Open MG jukebox. Using the software you download songs onto minidiscs in mp3 format (i think) .

Its so sweet - you basically store all your mp3s on your computer and check them out onto a disc, which using a normal compression can fit about 140 minutes of music on. All the playlists etc can be sorted out on your PC, so the discs act basically as memory cards, which you can change whenever you want using the software. The plus point is that the players and discs are very very cheap, meaning you can buy shitloads.

Def go for MD

dude, don't get a MD for skiing. i used mine last year, took a not very bad fall, and it stopped working. also, mp3 players are cheaper in the long run, not having to buy discs, and the resale on them is more. also, you don't want to have to carry discs around with you, and they brake pretty easily. go with MP3

its about the same if you consider that you have to record md's in real time, unless you have net md, and thats only like 10 times faster. and ripping doesn' take that long if you have a good program.

the best i think is the nomad zen by creative labs. It fits alot, and is more reliable than the ipod. Creative labs has a good reputation for quality audio products

get a sony minidisk. uses standard .wma and .mp3 and holds 5 hours per $2 disk. battery life is 52 horus on 1 AA. u can get a sony from $100 and up

Convenience is about the same with both. The major differences is up to the individual in what specifics they are looking for. I personally like my MINIDISC* player because I can change minidiscsc instead of shuffling through track lists for the songs I want to hear. The newer minidisc recorders/players can record at up to 40x real time and can fit up to 5 hours onto one minidisc. So basically one minidisc can hold more than an average mp3, and a few minidiscs would easily surpass it. To tell you the truth who actually has 1500 songs downloaded anyways? Five hours of music is more than enough for me.

It doesnt have a slot for expansion (maybe the new ones do) but I love my iRiver. Its about the size of my thumb and holds 20 songs. Audio quality is really good and its durable. I've fallen on it a lot.
