watching the news on it now.  lots of crazy shit going down.  They are saying at least 9 different locations having been attacked.

The anti-terror chief has been killed.

Hostages in 2 five star hotels there.

I think they are saying 78 dead now but it will go up.

These type of situations make me so angry.

man this shit happens in africa and in other places every damn day, i dont understand why we never hear about those. i hate how the us only addresses the issue if its involving Americans. we as people should try to do a better job of addressing international problems before they become problems like this

Oh I am definitely aware.  It all sucks.  The shit going down in Africa recently has been on my mind too.  The civil war going on in the congo, the ton of issues they are having with piracy, the drama in Zimbabwe.  It seems like most people in the US have no idea about any of them.

yea i mean obviously u know or anyone who has like a custom yahoo mail account with AP news feeds, but im talking about the 16 year olds and older people who rely on tv as a source of news, they think that thats all thats happening (darfur for example, most people dont even know where that is) i really always encourage people to go read a non bias article or two. read bbc or what have you

if u study the psychology of a terrorist you find that they are the people who are so desperate and have lost so much hope in the world they do what they do because they feel its the only thing left (taking their own lives) its very in vain and sad, sometimes u have to look at it from their eyes, true they are bad and evil and kill without reason, but they weren't born like that, they were in a shitty situation and someone preyed on them like a hawk and corrupted them at their weakest point.
its really a fascinating topic.

much luck to those in this tragedy.

You also have to look at the word "terrorist" as its used in each case.  There is something like 80+ definitions of the so there really isn't a set definition of what a terrorist is. In a way I guess you could call a terrorist some one who uses terror and other means that are not conventional to try and obtain thier goals, but in reality every government opperates in this kind of manner.

But I am not exacly the most inteligent person or on the ball about these kind of things and I tend to see things from multiple sides. So I am a typical dumbass American.

this shit is so much more out of control than i think anyone here can grasp...

on a side note, CNN.com's photo gallery of this incident is downright fucked. there are pics of the train station with POOLS of blood and guts all over the place, as well as streaks on the floor where bodies have been dragged through them. plus there's this close-up photo of a woman lying in a hospital who CNN claims is "badly wounded." she's clearly dead. shes covered in bloody bandages and her body is completely limp but she's got restraints on her arms and legs to keep her from moving around when they were treating her, so that alone means she's dead. plus there's a goddamn intubation tube sticking out of her throat with nothing attached to the end of it, so obviously she's not breathing. they need to take that shit down right now, this is all so fucked up.

Stuff like this is always going to happen it's sad and wrong but many oppressed groups feel like it's the only way they can be heard or the only way they can do something about their problems.

The organization that is claiming resposiblity for the attacks is called the Deccan Muhajaden (i beleive). From what I know about India is that there is a sepratist minority in southern India who are the Deccan's, they have lived in southern India since before what are considered modern Indians (Aryans). Modern Deccan's are mostly muslim (though the Deccan people existed before Islam did, so they are recent converts) and their region is one of the poorest in India, thier people have faced centuries and centuries of discrimination at the hands of Hindus and British.

I'm not condoning their slaughter of innocent people but I'd bet that most Deccan's feel hopeless and face hard lives where they are discriminated against and oppressed, many just want autonomy and freedom.

It's scary to think how easy this would be, I mean I'm not promoting it or anything, but think about it, 30 well armed people could go into a city and throw it into complete chaos. Our society runs on such a thin piece of... the word is escaping me right now... but I guess peace and order make sense, that it makes you think batman: the dark knight isn't so far fetched.

I have spent the past five months in India. I wasn't living in Mumbai but I spent a good amount of time in many of the places that were bombed which is pretty insane. I'm actually stuck in Bangkok now becuase protesters have taken over the main airports and its nearly impossible to find any other way to get out of the country.

The most interesting part about these attacks to me was that they specifically targeted foreigners. There have been sporadic bombings in India over the last several months but all of those have been religiously motivated attacks against Christians, Muslims and Hindu's. Directly attacking people becuase of their nationality and not religion is a huge change of tactic from what has happened in the past and represents a very different movement.

I'm sure we'll see the response of this soon enough, but what really worries me is how will India respond to this. What sort of example did we set back in 2001? When attacked by terrorists, you attack the country you think they originated from... although the Deccan Mujahideen havn't been confirmed as an actual terrorist group the speculation is that it is an intranational faction, but that region is so volital, who knows what'll happen.

I would just like to point out that since 9/11 there hasn't been a successful terrorist attack in the U.S. I by no means am backing Bush, but on 9/12 everyone wanted to get revenge on the terrorists. It's funny how easily the people flip flop.

^^ that guy is one of my professors at school...he was in command during Black Hawk Down and he's basically been a magnet for every American black ops program since Vietnam...that wiki profile doesnt even begin to tell the story.

Anyway, he's been on the inside of the intelligence business for the last 25 years, and he says that since 9/11 we've foiled 20-25 veeeeeeeery very credible and/or imminent attacks on US soil, none of which have been leaked to the press. I'd say that's pretty impressive, especially considering how undermanned our intelligence network is.

and then its black Friday, so a perfect turn of events for your walmart and target adds.

I guess I wasn't totally clear, but yah, I'm in his class right now...it's the sickest class I've ever taken. We have CIA agents and secret service guys and ex-Delta Force come tell us stories every week, his connections are ridic. Next week is gonna be the best by far, bonfire out by the river with a keg and like 10 special forces guys, ex intel spooks, international agents, and like 2 major generals. Stoked for sure. Oh and Eversmann is gonna be there, the sgt. from Black Hawk Down, he also went to our school and comes around to speak every now and then.

The only difference in trying to understand "how and why these terrorists came to be" should make is how we act to exterminate them. These "people" that choose to take such drastic actions are not rational human beings that can be reasoned with.

the thought that we can even eliminate terrorists (or just irrational people) is just as irrational as the aforementioned.

We've got to figure out how we handle the situations that arise so that we are impacted as minimally as possible, and figure out how we can act as to minimize the possibility of the situations.

I am interested, only if it can be utilized in a way that is useful for getting rid of them.

In terms of social conditions, the US gives out more foreign aid than any other country. So what needs to change? Many of the terrorist organizations don't even want us to be meddling in their region at all, good or bad. Its more complicated than just improving social conditions.

Perhaps no individual country needs to be responsible for the aid or the policing of any other country.  A global initiative-- ie. UN and NATO (albeit more effective and more inclusive)-- would be a good start.

i know it's good on our face to say we're the leader of providing foreign aid, but i think it's fair to say that aid is never entirely altruistic of provided from one individual, and that in taking away the specific countries involvement you remove the specific targeting of said countries for being meddlesome [ ah memories of scooby-doo :) ]

There is no system that currently exists that would make that either effective or feasible. Part of the reason foreign aid isn't as effective as it could be is because some people are simply corrupt douchebags. All it takes is one person to fuck it up, whether it be here in the US, the UN, or in the target nation/region itself.
