Mouth guard

Yo, who uses a mouth guard? what kind do you use? and what motivated you to wear one?

i wore one at the end of last year when i was learning 3's. it wasnt anything special, 99cents or so, and i just cut the strap off. my parents spent thousands of dollars to get me braces, and i didnt want to undo what they did. call me stupid, but i felt better which made it easier to ski.

i usually get a new one from the dentist every year for lacrosse so i just use my old ones for skiing. i had braces so my mom likes it when i take it with me but i usually only use it on first hits or inverts

ive never heard of anyone using mouth guards for skiing. i have had some gnarly crashes, like face plants into ice and stuff and nothing has ever happened.

I use one, need a new one though and this thread just reminded me to go get one. I decided to use one after seeing a friend put his teeth straight through his bottom lip on a cliff drop.

then you must be super special to have never heard of this.  watch your ski movies more closely, you'll see lots of invincible pros wearing them too.

if you know how much new teeth cost when you're off your parentals' insurance, then you'll most likely start wearing one.

i knocked out 3 teeth a few years back in my front flip craze, my dentist mad me a nice low profile one after that.

Started wearing one last year in a big air comp, now i wear it whenever i feel i could need it. It helps alot when hitting your head hard.

wish I could but with the amount of dental shit I have going on in my mouth right now, it's next to impossible. not to mention I'd have to mold a new one once a week since my teeth are shifting so rapidly, haha.

you could get one of the mouth guards that you boil in water to shape. and just keep reshaping it.

oh those are re-moldable? sick, thank you, I think I'll do that. my parent's insurance is dishing out 6000+ for my future grill, wouldn't want to fuck all that up with one bad fall!

The absolute best are the mouth guards you get made from your dentist. I don't wear one while sking, I did for Lacrosse and it's like it's not even their.

Yeah I rock one.  Just get the cheap ones that they sell for football.  You boil water and did it in the water and then put it in your mouth and bit down.  Directions are on the package.  Then just cut the strap off.  I just carry it in a zip lock bag in my pocket when I go skiing.  Use it when I want, then at atfter skiing take it out of the bag and wash it and let if air dry.  Its the way to go.

the mouth guard isnt to protect your teeth (well in part it does) but people wear them to prevent concussions. and its a really good idea if you are prone to them.

I always use a mouth guard and a back protector during competition. Exspecially in big mountain comps. The conditions aren't always powder and you never know what you might land on. Also it is A LOT CHEAPER to buy a mouth guard and a back protector than paying for surgery on your teeth or back.

i wore won when i raced skier cross, and for when im doing scary shit

usually tho i only wore it to help prevent concussions, i never really even thought about knocking my teeth out

are the mouthguards you guys use rubberized athletic ones, or are the ones you get from your dentists like clear plastic ones.  i've got one that i wear at night for grinding teeth and as kind of a retainer, but i dunno if that would be effective at all.

It helps to dissipate the impact in your head. It doesn't do a ton, but when it comes to your head, every bit counts. It also helps because sometimes when people get knocked out or concussed, they clench and grind their teeth, sometimes hard enough to damage teeth. Mouth guard, again, helps.

Yea i just use a footy mouthguard, chuck it in my jacket pocket and just pull it out whenever i go on larger features, trying something new or something risky

Word, exactly what I do. After getting one bad concussion I realized I didn't want another. There was a study put out recently that blows to the head were like 30% less damaging when people were wearing mouth guards which is pretty huge.

I wear one, its one of them custom ones from the ortho, shit works great, i can talk, and it just stays in and i dont even notice it half the time. I started wearing one after a massive concusssion i got last season, dr said hed let me get back to it sooner if i promised to wear that and a POC helmet (hes a rep), I hated the helmet but the mouthgaurd is a great idea seriously

most mouthguards don't really do anything to prevent concussions
if you read the fine print on the box youll find out about how they're insured against dental injuries but not against concussions. this is only for the cheaper ones tho, some of the high end ones have concussion protection
