Gus is fucking sick!

I have no hate what so ever towards Gus, I just felt that I should report my opinion of the judging in the qualifications if I have a blog....
What Gus did was super sick and i think he is an awesome skier and will be the future of the sport, he has one of the best mentalities of any young skiers I have met in the past 8 years, so its just a matter of time before we have him on X podiums, but the jump he did at qual at KOS was not one of his best ones.
So therefor I was a bit upset on the judging because I felt that they rewarded the "wow" factor to much and overlooked grabs and style....

So bottom line, I am big a Gus fan (almost invited him to JOSS last year) so the hate was on the score, and towards Gus....

man jon its a good thing you cleared that up early haha. newschoolers can work itself in a wild frenzy over the whole pros-vs unknown thing. just observe the whole dumont/wallisch thing haha.

another mad up for newschoolers as a whole. where else can you go and talk to the pros of your sport. certainly not nfl.com for tom brady. hell, probably not even skateboarding.com for tony hawk.

Just because a lot of kids on NS bitch about your video blog doesn't mean what you said is wrong. There are plenty of us that completely agree with what you said. People on here tend to over analyze everything, mostly because most of us don't have decent snow yet (ha).

I have no hate for Gus but there is NO WAY in hell that he should have qualified 2nd. Phil C easily should have qualified 2nd. His jump was so clean and smooth. Your run is (or at least should be) about your ENTIRE run, not just the time you spent in the air. Its all about staying in control. Something that was clearly lacking. That said its not easy being a judge. Everyone will always hate on something.

Oh, and to clear out a nother thing...

I have on numerous places read that people are speculating on the judging and how this might be different from other events as the name of the event is King of style, but the judging is exactly the same as all other events...so the name is a bit strange to me..


What was good though was that you had 3 runs and needed to do 2 different tricks, that really switched it up and challenged people that only have one good trick, witch I think is great for the sport!

i dont care what anyone says, he still flails, and forces his landings like crazy, lands switch in that wierd legs 6ft apart half wedge thing, which i know is hard to help hitting jumps that big w/ rotartions that big. But I still prefer a more controlled upper body in the air to landing in a carve like most the euros w/ a racing backround do.

But the kid does have a RIDICUlOUS amount of tricks spinning both ways, and i give him huge props for that.

thats why they call it king of style. they  have you dig into your bag of tricks so you have to throw 2 other tricks that you dont have on lock for comps. one with the best excecution, grab, stomp, air, etc. (which is style i always thought) won. instead of spin to win, forced people to slow down for the most part which is cool.

I think most people here really appreciate you coming on ns and clearing things up, hell even checking out ns and caring about our opinion, much respect jon.  Gus is for sure a legit kid, he definitely throws down and has so much ahead of him, keep it up Gus!

1. Gus is the shit because he can throw mad tricks spinning in both directions, something a lot of pros have difficulty doing, and he's only 16/17... he has plenty of time to clean up his style.
2. Jon, huge props for coming on to NS and clearing shit up. It's awesome that we as a community get to hear directly from our pros and I'm really glad you took the time to give a fuck. And you're right - style is everything from the moment you start moving to the moment you stop, what you do in the air is just one part of the whole picture.
3. King of Style needs to be renamed or the judging restructured if it's not actually about goddamn style.
4. Some of the people in this thread are huge tools. Stop munching down on so much cock.

Jon... two simple requests from a humble man:
1. The kangaroo flips are getting tired. I know you have a bag of tricks big enough to crush a small elephant. Use it.
2. That being said, PLEASE, for the sake of NS, do one Liu Kangaroo flip. It would be glorious.

Kenworthy, if Jon doesn't step up to the plate on this one, I'm trusting the Liu Kangaroo Mission to you.

Hahahahahahahaha... Fail. It's Jon Olsson, dude. As ridiculously talented and creative as those guys are... it's Jon Olsson. It's not even categorically possible to say that anyone is better than him at skiing right now, and if you were going to try to make an argument (why you'd do such a thing I have no idea), the number of people on whose behalf such an argument could be advanced could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Re: Jon's comment, he is certainly entitled to his opinion, as is everyone. He was right about the judging, from what I could see (not being in Stockholm), at least as far as the qualis go... I thought the judging in the finals was pretty unobjectionable aside from the few inexplicably low scores and PK's 12 probably not deserving a 99 out of 100 (I actually thought if anything would get that kind of love, Jon's third trick would), but I have no qualms whatsoever with PK winning the comp given what he put down out there. The whole "king of style" thing is a misnomer to a certain extent, but these are some of the best skiers in the world and they can all do zero spins and smooth sw7s with their eyes closed, so if you try to judge solely on that, it's going to end up being almost arbitrary in its subjectivity... you might as well not call it "King of Style" then either; it'd be more like "What TJ & Co. Enjoyed Today". They did send some numbers the way of people who killed slower spins; Simon had a 7 that scored in the mid 200s.

And as I say, Jon's fully entitled to his opinion on the judging, on Gus' quali jump, hell, on Gus' style generally or anyone else's. However, kids on this site hating / criticizing / voicing their opinions and etc. is completely different from a guy who rides for red bull, oakley and multiple other major companies, gets paid a few hundred grand a year, has his own camera crew following him around and happens to be one of the most respected representatives of this segment of the sport, singling out a 16 year old as an example of a bad judging decision. When you represent a company, you really have to watch what you say, because it reflects badly not so much on you as a person as on the image you're paid to put out there (and in Jon's case, given his status, on the sport), and because you're in a position where your opinion is more than just opinion: to a lot of kids out there, it's the fucking gospel. So I'd say the apology is well warranted. In my view, saying "the judging was whack" is fair comment, saying, or implying, "Gus's jump sucked and he didn't deserve the spot he got" is stepping over a line into territory best left to the peanut gallery here in SG.

But come on, we all say things that come across wrong every day, and multiple major sponsors or no, Jon's a human being and it's going to happen to him too on occasion (particularly when his life is on film for everyone's edification) so the "Jon Olsson is a dick" comments have been pretty damned absurd. Yeah, because you're all perfect, right?

I dont see what the big deal is, it´s an honest opinion that he didn't like Gus's dub flip. They're all friends, and i can tell my friends if there's something about their riding i dont like.

On another note does anybody know if Gus and whoever he crashed (lokked like Tom W.) are allright, Wallisch looked pretty dazed and it was a seriously hard hit!

Sure, he doesn't afterbang the shit out of them like Delorme or Wallisch, but get your head out of your ass. Right-side spins like they're nothing, doubles, crazy shit off rails, and he's SIXTEEN. The kid slays, I'm so fucking sick of this Kenworthy hate. So he's not as smooth as some of the other up and comers; he has plenty of time to improve that though, he has an absurdly huge bag of tricks for someone his age. I'd bet good money he's gonna be huge in this sport by the time he's 20.

And just so you can't use that "in MY opinion" to weasel your way out of this, I'd like to say that this is more directed to the numerous Gus haters on this site rather than you specifically.

ok ill state here that i hate gus kenworthy, he is an okay skier no style and nothing i havent seen before but thats not why the reason is because he is the biggest suck up in the whole world he agrees with everything another pro says and hell he was the NS bitch!

OK, first of all, how the hell do you know what i look like on rails? I was not referring to Gus on rails in the first place...rails arnt even fucking skiing!

Second thing.....I appreciate the fact that he is 16, and im sure his style with get better with age! 
I was directing my writing to the people who think he is the best thing in the world right now (which is 97% of NS users)  but truthfully he isnt anything promising or special!

And finally....I hate afterbang, nothing worse than a forced pose/stance after you land a trick....looks soooo gay, its just to shy away from the fact that you barley landed a shitty trick!

don't hate on jon for voicing his opinion. i cant think of another sport where one of the top athletes is not only talking with the mainstream, but listening as well. what everybody is forgetting is that jon doesn't need to go on newschoolers and give a shit what people think. it would be like if travis rice was on the transworld forums every day. except over there everybody would be on their knees begging for his dick because snowboarders are generally like that.

btw jon had one of the sickest cab7 noses ive seen about 3 years back at wsi. dudes got solid grabs he should bring those back into his bag.

Jon is the example of class and this thread proves why.

Probably the single most influential skier in the whole industry - new tricks, running comps, video blog, going back to racing for a ballin bet, driving a lambo with a ski rack on top......who else even comes close

Jon is the man.  While every other skiier his age pussed out of park 5 years ago for the easy powder life (landing switch off 20ft cliffs)  he is still beating kids 8 yrs younger than himself like Gus (who as Jon himself would say is fucking sick!)
