I have a debate in speech and debate for English coming up in a week or so. Heres the topic...Americans should be able to share copyrighted material over the internet. I don't know if I will be supporting pros or cons untill right before the debate so any help is good. THANKS!!!!

maybe its just me but the answer seems pretty obvious since its against the law to share copyrighted material on the internet.....

Yeah I'm aware of that but thats not the point. The point is to prove that it should be legal if your on the pro side and vise versa.

Pros
- share information, everyone stays informed
- people are exposed to things they otherwise couldnt be exposed to (more cultured people)
- stuff that normally costs money is free
Cons
- its illegal
- copyright owners lose money
- discourages use of copyrights (whats the point if no one follows them?)
- less media, less jobs (whats the point of spending money on something that is going to be freely distributed when you need people to pay for it so you can make a living?)
- lower quality media
The pros seem obvious, but i think they are ephemeral. it seems like a great idea in theory, but eventually the media that people want to share will disappear because there wont be a market anymore. whats the point of spending millions on a movie when someone can download it for free? its already happening with bmx videos. thats why there are so many more web vids then production vids. who wants to pay 20 bucks for a high quality video when they can download a medium quality one for free? people need to make money
