yah it took me thirteen years to finally switch to no poles and i have to say it doesnt help really with balance although in my opinion it makes it a lot easier to spin on and stuff and its so much easier to throw tricks and do grabs on jumps...but thats just my opinion...
also i went thirteen years with poles and it also felt extremely unnatural for me when i first started doing no poles but after a couple of weeks with no poles its just like skiing normal. It probably actually helps your balance with just normal skiing but not on rail i dont think. it makes it so you cant get unbalanced cuz if you do then youre screwed and youll just fall.
i rode all of last year without poles.
ive rode this season with poles and soo far ive been nailing 270 on/off cleaner and swtch ups cleaner. poles definally make a difefrence. i do find it easier to grab without poles tho. thats it tho!
I personally think alot of people look foolish, especially on rails when they don't use poles. It's understandable when you're seshing and you drop your poles when trying stuff, but I hatteeeee seeing people bomb the mountain with their hands flapping around. Thats just my opinion tho, def no hate on those who can pull it off. Its funny tho, Wallisch seems to be using poles about 100% of the time now, and the 'no pole' phaze is kinda receding. But whatevs. I agree with the fact that they help with grabs and they definitely keep your thumbs from jamming when falling, but I feel naked without them half the time.
