Did you understand the girl was in a dream? That is what the first half of the movie is about..her ideal life...she becomes an rising star is hollywood..she falls in love with the girl she loves in real life.. that adams guys life gets fucked over,,, then they show her wakin up when she opens pandora's box ( metaphorical) and goes back to her real life where she is no longer the star, her love of her life was takin away by Adam the director. And in the end she kills herself.. because she is so depressed. That is the basic plot of the movie, but there is so much more, all the symbolism, all the metaphorical clues, and references from dream to real life.. watch it again now, you will notice so much more.

Yes I found it very obscure. The dream was one of my explanations to explain it. All in all though, a very odd movie, and difficult to grasp.

Even knowing about the dream and all, what the fuck is with the crazy creepy witch-dude in the alley? And what about the tiny old people? There is so much that is absolutely fucked in this movie.
Have any of you seen Strange Highways? It's even weirder!

Okay..I read about it on some site and here's what I got:

Diane wants Camilla dead. She pays the hitman who marks it up in his black book. She will see a blue key on the table when the deed is done. In the end when she sees that key, she starts to masturbate,and has a dream,where she is a star,not Camilla,who stole her role in 'the silvia story' or something.

That monster is just a bum? I think it's just a bum,but the elderly people I think are Diane's guilty conscious,and come to haunt her in the end for killing Camilla..

And what else..hmm..the site had something about everything you see in the last 20 or so minutes is also seen in the dream: Coco,the cowboy(only seen for a split second), Adam,,that blonde Camilla....THE ONLY THING THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE IS:

The dude in the beginning who's afraid of the monster-bum. It has no connection to the film in anyway,except that it takes place in that diner where she hires the hitman,and sees the waiter called Betty(hence Diane's alias in her dream).

And also, what the fuck is going on with David Lynch and MIDGETS? No movie without midgets and Twin Peaks sure had it's share of midgets..

I thoguht the scary guy was symbolic of her guilty conscience, and unleashed the guilt for what she did upon her.
Very good movie though.

^Eternal Sunshine is a sick movie,but definately NOT hard to understand. YOU should check out Adaptation starring Nicholas Cage,it's very very very good.
