nikon d40 ive seen some amazing shots with them but some of the newer lenses arent compatible with them but i think its only the silent wave motor lenses

used d40, or new 400d...mind you wont have much left over for glass which is VERY IMPORTANT

Short for single lens reflex, it a term associated with cameras and digital cameras. SLR cameras use a mirror between the lens and the film, or image sensor , to provide a focus screen. This means the image you see in the viewfinder (or LCD) will be the same as what appears on film or as your digital image

oh ok word. well one of my buddies is selling this camera that he says is an slr. It is a canon.. rebel xs? for like 150. Is that worth it?

basically, you dont need to kno what it means really you just need to know how to use one and the mechanics of the lens and f-stop and shutter speed  and what you use at certain times. Do some research and learn some about it then commit to buying an slr

matters if its like highly used. slr's have shutter counts and many only last for about 75,000 shots and the cheaper the camera usually the less shots it will last so i would check that out first.

Are you sure you mean the Canon Xs? not the 300d, check. Also shutter actuation(the amount of times the shutter is fired in its life time) is well less then actual. Companies have to put and a number that they know for sure will be reached which is usally quite less the the actual, as they dont want customers complaining. I doubt your friend has take close to 75,000 actuations though. With my newest camera for which i have had it also 2 years and use it more than on a weekly basis it has seen approx 35,000. So i don't think that is of concern. Make sure the sensor is clean and working which is highly important to the life of your camera. If we could know a bit more about this camera it would be of much use.

Yep...

There are plenty of options out their but you are going to have to leave some money to get a good quality lens - like the 17-85.

Here is a review of the budget DSLR's on the market atm compared to each other.  Of course there are still other options so go into a shop and try the cameras for yourself and see what it best for you.

yeah but that is a 500 dollar lens and with a budget like hes got that's kind of alot especially for a first dslr not to mention the 28-135 is a little more useable with a little more zoom. however no argument here that the 17-85 is a better lens, just more money

used 30d and 28-135 would be a good starter set up that wont let you down any time in the immidate future

XSI is the new rebel (XTi is a couple years old now), slightly updated. 12 mexapixels instead of 10, little bigger body, i've had both the Xti and Xsi and its a nice upgrade. a REALLY awesome camera for 800$. XSi treated me very well also. i shot with it for 2 years and its a great durable camera that works just fine with the kit lens that it comes with. that ones super cheap, about 500$ now.

i think you've got them mixed up the xsi and the xs came out like 6 months ago and the xs is the cheaper 10 megapixel rebel, the xsi is the 12 megapixel

I think you mean the Xti or 400d....and he originally sad Xs which is impossible...and for $150 its most likely not the Xti most likely the Xt(350d)....it would be helpful if steezenut could confirm

xs is  possible its the cheapest of the canon product line and used he could prob get it for that much if its in ok but not great condition

ive got a nikon D60 and i really like it. It takes a little while to get used to but it takes high quality shots i think.

I can sell you my camera and lens combo for $500, and it still takes amazing pics, check out my photos in my sig.....its a great beginners package. sigma 70-300 with APO (image stabalization) and 350d and then kit lens, 2 batterys, 8gb card and 1 gb card. Bought for over $1500.

......if your interested of course.
