Tell me what i need to start making ski edits

ok, so i have made edits in the past for school and what no, so i know how to use adobe premiere and what no, but, i just decided that i wnat to get set up at home so i can make my own.  

so i have a dell dimension desktop... what can i do do upgrade it to have the horsepower to run adobe smoothly, and store the capture footage (i also have an external hard drive). video card? upgrade the RAM?

and what camera would be a decent, well priced option? something woth good color saturation? HD? Mini-DV? hard drive? zoom?

im willing to help you out, can you give some more specs on your laptop?? and in terms of camera, how much do you want to spend and how serious are you?? i can give you a ton of reccomendations, but i need more details.

whoa, now you're talking about what flavor wedding cake before you even get a number. First you're gonna need some tall tees, a reduced vocabulary, a crew name, some gang signs, maybe a gun, and some spinners. You'll have to know how to get on the chairlift so you can get the real mountain vibe in your edit, but don't worry about the skiing thing, you can always download. Other than that, looks like youve got the more advanced things involved, so go out and get em' tiger!

or how about just an overall budget?

But to answer one of your questions, i think that it is much easier just to get a HDD camera rather then a mini DV, because although tapes can be reused they loose quality each time that they are. Not to mention the overall convenience of HDD compared to mini DV.

its a Dell Dimension 3000, no firewire port... about a 80 GB hard drive and i have a 120 GB external hard drive. Im gonna upgarde it to 2GB RAM (thats the most it can take). also, its has a not so good internal Intel video card, so im gonna get a new one. can reccomend one that is well priced and has two ports for monitors?

as for the camera, i would like to spend 2-300?? unless you have a good one in mind that isnt a whole lot more..? and i would like to make a few edits during the season, and hopefully end up making a decent half hour-ish movie in the end...

i would prob just buy a new tape each time and not re-use them,, cuz yes, they do lose quality (that is what i used for the school).

brooooooo if you want a decent camera youre gonna have to do better than 300...unless you REALLY trust craigslist or ebay, even then though, youre looking at 500+ but probably more like 1000 if you want to make really good looking movies

duuuuuude, im leaving for the Navy in the spring (special forces)... so for one season, im not gonna drop a G n a camera, when i can spend that on fun trip or other such things. just something thats all right... ya know?

thanks to the wonders of google, im assuming your Dimension has a Celeron processor. quite the opposite of a strong CPU. So if your not willing to spend some money on a  better comp, the best option is memory. Uprgrading is a start, you should be set with the 2 GB of RAM. Video Card should not be that much of a problem, because the video quality will depend on your camera, not the video card, but if you want a decent one, look into the mid-range NVIDIA 9000 series. I suggest the 9600GT.

again i dont think premiere will run too well with the weak processor, so i suggest a new comp if you have the money. celerons have horrendous cache sizes and not too good speeds, bus speeds are pretty average. if you choose to buy a new comp, look for an Intel Core2Duo CPU with at speed of at least 2.3 GHz and it will be a bigge rbonus if its a new 45 nm CPU

for a cam, i suggest something Panasonic. they make some pretty good HDD cams in the range of $250 to about $400. just google some camcorder review sites and look there. it will give you better advice, and will help narrow down your choices. one thing i might add, although im quite biased to this. i dont like Sony, i think all there products are WAYYY overpriced, overrated and just not that great. dont buy sony!

sorry for the long rant.

colesnotes: get a new computer, with a Core2 Duo (at least 2.3 GHz), read some camcorder review sites.

well, that should do you fine, better than a celeron. it may take a little longer than usual tho and you prob wont be able to run anything else in the background. thats what kinda sucks tho with vid editing in general, its a CPU intensive process. this is why I have a dedicated video editing box :P

gs320 is a really good camera 3ccd produces really good colors for a sd camera or a hv20 a good hv camera little harder to use and a little more expensive GO MINI DV best way to go and if you don't, don't do the dvd format cameras

Don't take too much offense from everybody, but your post was pretty much ridiculous lol.

Windows movie maker will be your friend here, as buying a $250 camera and then getting final cut pro or something is just impractical.

As for the camera, 200-300 doesn't give you a lot of cameras to work with, you'll probably just want the standard still camera video camera combo that you can get from future shop. That is, unless you can find a video-specific camera for around that much.

Zoom you won't need to worry about, as I doubt you'll be setting up a tripod every time you take a shot, as you're not getting too serious from what I undestand.

Other than that, my best advice is learn to use your settings, as that will improve the quality of your shots ALOT, even with a not-so-great camera. Learn how to adjust your white balance, brightness levels, and exposure times. This will let you take better shots with your camera, therefore making better edits.

And learn how to use windows movie maker, as it is the best thing you can have for that much money.

im actually gonna use adobe premiere, seeing as how i could just use a torrent to download it for free. and zoom prob will be nice cuz i will use a tripod on some shots...

if youre serious about that big fat claim you might want to avoid skiing as much and train your ass off.

you wont make it through BUDs with a blown knee, nor will you make it if you were just hanging out drinking beer and skiing all winter...you gotta change your whole lifestyle

well i am serious, seeing as how i am already contracted for the spec ops program and guraenteed EOD school. i train once a week with ex-navy seals/mentors and 2-3 other nights a week on my own accord. i have been in the program for 2 months now and i know what is expected of me. i know the risks involved with continuing to ski. but i accept them. and though i will not be going through BUDS, i still expect that i will be in tip-top shape when i leave for basic. you have no idea about my lifestyle, so do not be one to judge. thank you for your concern, and please piss off.

not to be harsh, but you don't know me, so that was a n unfair presumption

This is incorrect. Reusing Mini DV tapes does not reduce quality. It may increase your chance for a dropout but does not offect quality.


as for the rest of the post. You will need a Bigger eather internal (recomended) or external hard drive and also need a faster connection than USB.

its a ton more space, for not much money, and some have a firewire port built right in

mac...hands down the best for editing/importing/exporting/not crashing and loosing your shit.

you can buy a refurb, that is basically new.

cameras...id snag something panasonic. as the price increases so does the quality.

wow, so apparently mentioning that im going into the navy is like the WORST THING. i dont want to to claim, but i mentioned it because it is a 6 (vs. the standard 4) year program, so i willl be gone from home for a long time, not because i wanted to slap my dick on the table.

my goal here was to figure out what i needed to make edits because i enjoy doing that and it will be some time before i have this freedom. so what it seems like i should do is:

-go with a decent panasonic camera, best bang for the buck it looks like...

-if i continue to use my current computer, use WMM, not adobe...?

-^upgrade RAM and prob video card so the computer runs smoother while editing?

-look into getting a refrubed macbook? prob will...

-never mention that im in the navy because doing so automaticlly makes me a dick... because i decided to put myself in harms way to defend this nation. last "claim" i promise.

not having a firewire port might be annoying,

HDD cameras are way simpler, but more expensive generally.
i roll mini DV and its not that big a problem, it just sucks when your dumb friends rewind then tape over shit.
