Advice to situation with kid owing me $$

so i left my new longboard in a "friend"/coworker's car and after realizing i forgot it i called him. then i told him a million fucking times it cannot get stolen and i gave him a list of precautionary things he could and should do.  he said he would take the board out of his car and bring it inside or cover it up in his car/ put a blanket over it so noone sees it.  he didnt do any of that and my board got stolen that night leaving me $250 down.  i feel he is definitely liable for a part of that cost.  while i shouldnt have left it in his car, i called him and let him know/told him what to do and he agreed.  he wont even talk about this now and feels as though he owes me jack shit.  bullshit.  i cant get him on the phone.  i texted him.."answer ur phone.  u can pay or fight since your being so fucking difficult."  no response.  other than this he has been cool but im definitely not friends with him.  friends dont snake eachother like that.  what do you guys think i should do?  its not like im asking for 250 in cash either, i know its not coimpletely his fault.  i offered to split it, he wouldnt take that option either and he wont pay even less than that.  i have been very considerate with him.  i gave him time cause i know hes been real busy with football and i have told him he could pay me later on since hes tight on cash.  but he doesnt want to pay at all.  im just asking him to fucking compromise like a man and take some responsibility, except all he does is give me foolish/incompetent answers.   i think i am going to fight him, whether i win or lose i will get my point across and thats what im going for.  you cant tell people to go fuck themselves when shit is partly your own fault.

Ask him to meet up somewhere, to sort things out... Be calm, and tell him your point of view and ask him for his... Even if his comes across as bein complete bullshit stay calm and just make him see he's wrong. I definately think he should pay at least half of it if he didn't do any of the precautionary shit.

Then if that shit don't work... then you get into the grey area really, I doubt fighting him will make him get your money. You're gonna need to find a reason for him to give you your money.

your board was "stolen" the very first night he had it in his possession? that doesn't seem sketchy to you? like, maybe he kept it/sold it and how he's just laughing at you for leaving it with him?

hey man not to be a downer or anything, but it was you that left it in his car. in my eyes, it was your responsibility. he had no controll over somebody steeling stuff from his car, ya know?

i understand that your pissed (i would too!) but in the end it is your fault i think. even though he didnt cover it up or anything (and how do you actually know he didnt take any precautions?) you left it in his car and he had no part in steeling it, so even though it sucks, i would suggest to just pay the 250 bucks and learn from the situation at hand.

and fighting wouldnt do anything. i dont know who would win but seeing as he plays football he's probably a tough guy (and maybe you are two, but its irrevelant). even if you did win, you'll still have to pay 250 bucks b/c then he definatly wont help you out, and you will have some possible court costs/a record, which is never something that you would want.

If my car was broken into because of your longboard I wouldn't want to talk to you either. regardless of anything, you forgot it and left it in his care. your fault. if it was that important you should never have "fogot" it or driven over to get it.

gotta go with the crowd here. if it really was that important to you, you probably would have remembered it in the first place. it would be like me just forgetting i had my skis in a buddy's car and them getting taken, but that would never happen with me. it would be like forgetting a kid. i guess live and learn is all i got. sounds harsh, but it's true. my zune got stolen a month ago cause i was was careless just for a day and left it at a friend's. surely it was jacked the moment he had other friends over. if it were so important to me i would have remembered to keep it with me. it would be stupid not to. i couldn't put the blame on anybody so it was a $200 mistake i learned from. looks like it's just your time now.

Yea, that was not even a little bit his fault. Like everyone else said, if it was that important to you, you should have taken better care of it/not forget about it. He owes you nothing, and you just sound like an asshole trying to get money for something that was your fault in the first place, its your responsibility to keep your items safe, not your friends.
