I am looking to get my FID, but i live in massachusetts so it's impossible to sit down and understand the restrictions. I want to buy an M1 garand rifle, but under the umbrella of a Mass FID, I can only have a non-large capacity rifle. Being 20, i cant get a class a or b permit (the age is 21) so I'm stuck with the FID. Does the M1 fall under the title of a non-large capacity rifle? I want to do this legally so I don't get screwed with jail time over illegal posession, and I want the M1 because it is really an iconic rifle. Many credit it with winning world war 2. I just wanted to kno w if anyone out there can be of some service

Disclaimer: Do not quote me on this. I am in no way shape or form responsible for the consequences of you owning or operating any sort of firearm.
That said, i am 99.9% sure i am right: YOU CAN OWN A M1 GARAND IN MASS. Massachusetts defines a large capacity rifle as any semi-automatic or automatic handgun or rifle that is capable of accepting a magazine of 10 rounds or more.
The m1 garand, i believe, accepts a maximum of 8 rounds in a clip, not a magazine. So i believe youre safe on both counts, both in that it can hold max only 9 rounds (1 chambered) and it doesnt accept true magazines.

oh that is if youre getting obviously the .30-06 chambered version and not the .276 pederson which holds 10 rounds. But like 99% of all m1s are .30 ought 6 and they only hold 8 rounds in an en bloc.

There is just something sick about an M1 garand.. The fact that people were using it in vietnam attests to its ability as a battle rifle. I've talked to some marines who have told me they'd rather be using that than the M16. It is such a nice looking piece of equipment as well. I have a question.... Does the fact that it is semi auto push it up to large capacity status? If so, i may be stuck getting a bolt action mauser k98.

We'll see.
But you don't need to turn EVERYTHING into a political thread.

they are pretty expensive, i think its 1,500 for a really really flawless one. Through the Citizen Marksman Program you can by varying degrees of the M1, i think the cheapest is the rack grade, which is like 430 bucks

springfield's got those M1A's that are polymer or whatever and don't weigh 40 pounds like the OG WWII version.
and the whole "capable of accepting a magazine of 10 rounds or more" is slightly strange. wouldn't your law simply be on "high-capacity" mags themselves?
congrats to everyone for almost keeping this free of political bullshit when someone had a legit question.

yeah ive heard about those ones. I kinda want an original one. Massachusetts has crazy gun laws. They shifted their stance in 1998 to make it harder to obtain a firearm. Since then, homicide, armed robbery, accidental death rates have skyrocketed. I just want to shoot targets with a WWII rifle.

Well, its also for protection when I move into my own house one day. I don't know if i could ever hunt, I dont think id be able to kill unprovoked. But yeah, rounds are expensive. I think through the CMP you can get cheaper ammo, but I think its old ammo, so its kinda "use at your own risk." haha so idk, i doubt ill be dropping tons of clips in a day.

thats probably not the best CQB weapon. and a 7.62 will probably go through all the walls in your house.

yeah, thats true, but id love a rifle. In terms of CQB, i think it would be sick to have a .45 colt 1911a1, those things are so sick.

haha dude, my grandfather told me about his weapons training in the marines in the 40's, he said the colt .45 1911a1 was so damn powerful. He said it was like holding a cannon. I guess the .45 developed out of a need for stronger stopping power during the phillippines war. It is a really nice looking pistol though, it just oozes with American quality. I want like, either one of the blacker ones (parkerized?) with a brown handgrip or shiny silver one with bown handgrip.

the garand is only like 9.5 lbs, and im JACKED so, no big deal..hahaha. I'm not going to be trekking across the country with it, just driving to ranges and sport shooting it. I'd i want protection ill go with a colt 45 pistol and get a class A permit when I'm 21. In mass, the Class A is concealed carry, even though i hardly need that where I'm from, it makes transportation purposed a lot easier.
