Detuning New Hellbents

Hey guys i just got a pair of the 08/09 Hellbents and i was wondering how many inches from the tip and tail should i detune the edges. I have heard a lot of different opinions on this but if anyone knows for sure it would really help. Cheers!

Shouldnt you detune the entire rockered portion of the tip and tail?

I have heard a couple people say that, but i have also heard that since it is rockered i should detune the whole ski. I just dont know! Im so confused...

detuning the whole ski doesnt sound like the right idea. i would just detune the rockered portion. i mean you still want some sort of edge hold underfoot just in case you need it

De-tuning the whole ski sounds like the wrong idea. You still want an edge, but to avoid the chance of hooking in the pow you should detune the rockered portions of the ski.

I detuned the whole ski because it seems to me that detuned skis "slarve" way better in powder and i dont ride my bentleys on ice anyways.

Yeah that totally makes sense if your bents are out for pure pow days only.

I just can't bring myself to take away the on piste capabilities of this ski though. I love how despite being rockered it can still rip on groomers.

Thats exacty what i was thinking. But do you guys think it will make a huge difference in powder/crud if the whole edge is detuned?

I don't know why you would detune them at all? How often do you catch an edge in pow?

If you detune the whole ski it will slarve better but probably not that much better, but i like to keep mine sharp underfoot so i can grip on the steep icy faces that snow won't stick to.

leave them as is.  carry some sandpaper or a small file with you in your pack.  if you feel you are hooking, detune a little at the tip/tails.  repeat until you have tweaked them to how you like.

i doubt it makes a very large difference either way.

and i can still carve fine as long as its slightly soft and not straight up ice.

I rounded the edge of all  the rockered part and gummy detuned underfoot for all my rockered skis. There is really no reason that you need a sharp edge in the tip and tail of a rockered ski. If you are skiing the groomers on the rockered part, most likely you are buttering and going sideways anyhow.  Just get a nice file and have at it
