i think it has to do with the THC actually relaxing your lungs it, and ignoring the minimal smoke damage I never had a problem during lacrosse season when I was smoking granted that was only occasionally though.

They actually make THC inhalers that are made specifically for asthma patients, it helps relax the air ways in your lungs and keep them wide and open as opposed to tensed and irritated.
