I suggest looking into a wide angle lens, definatly if your going to be shooting mountain scenery etc. I dont think you need anything longer than 55mm for skiing really, it just depends how you like to shoot.
Filters wide, a circular polasier wouldn't be bad for skiing, they increase saturation in the sky, so you get some really nice blue colours and whatnot. I've also heard that a lot of ski photographers shoot using ND filters, these reduce the amount of light that enters the lens, they do this because the sun bouncing off the snow can often overexpose pictures, but i wouldn't use anything over about ND2 which reduces the light into the lens by one stop.
