PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.

At a news conference this afternoon, offiicals said they believe that Ashley Todd's injuries were self-inflicted.

Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.

Todd initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

Todd told investigators that she didn't remember what happened.

Police say they do not believe any other people were involved; and her friends believed the story about the attack.

According to police, investigators working on the interview process detected several inconsistencies in Todd's story that differed from statements made in the original police report.

Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Diane Richard released a statement earlier today, saying: "Because of the inconsistencies in her statements, Ms. Todd was asked to submit to a polygraph examination which she agreed to do."

No photos of Todd are being released by Pittsburgh Police at this time.

Not related. I wouldnt care if it's an obama volunteer either. People do stupid shit. connecting that to mccains struggling run for president is not correct.

for real. It was a backward letter "B" so the obvious assumption would be that she did it to herself in a mirror and didnt realize that she was writing it backwards..

As usual I don't agree with him, but Duncan's not the only one who thinks this is a nail in the coffin.

this just doesn't make sense to me at all?

I realize this isn't your argument, but how is some person carves a B on there face race-baiting? I dont understand the logic of since someone barely related to a campaign and mccain can do something stupid and people see that as a realization that they dont know the democratic candidate enough and switch? I am just missing something here? It just doesn't seem logical at all.

sorry for the dp.

all the reports had a statment like " a black man who supports barak obama was enraged by her (pick one: bumper sticker/campaign pin) and attacked the victim, beating her, sexually molesting her, and carving a b into the side of her face.

mccain and his approved campaign didnt race bait, no actual candidate would stoop that low, and he and palin are innocent in this matter. but this girl did, by making sure the assaulter in her story was known as a "black obama supporter"

it's a shame this could roll back on the rep. party.  in an election where the issues are so important, to have them clouded by asshats like this chick is dissapointing.

however, in politics, you are guilty by association, as we have seen with the william ayers/rev. wright, etc... issues.  the democrats just dont know how to (or choose to) exploit those irrelevent connections as effectively as karl rove and his former assistants who now help run mccain's campagin do.

and don't accuse me of being a bleeding heart liberal, rove's track record was built on gossip mongering and false accusations, and it is a fact that not only is rove himself offering help in an advisory role to mccain, his campaign is using several former Rove staffers on and deploying tactics that were part of the reason he was defeated by W. in 2000.
