Self protection question for the older ns comunity

so just to clean things up here im not tryng to be hard or ganster...im white and can fight but dont like too. i avoid violent confrentation

iv been stuck up before in new orleans and never thought twice about buying a gun. but due to the rise of murders and stickups in the city i live (baton rouge) some just down the street from me... i purchaced a glock 21 and for self defence purposes to protect me and my girlfriend. many of my friends own guns for the same reason...

so my question is who here on ns own a gun, and what is the purpose of owning yours?

do u pracice with it, or taken any firearms classes?

im not looking for any imature responses... this question is strictly for the older ns comunity

As for your topic, I was thinking about bringing a hand gun from home, getting a permit, etc and carrying it with me as a concealed weapon on and off campus (U of U you can have a concealed weapon) but i don't think i am at the point yet, plus im only 19, 20 soon, and if im not mistaking you have to be 21 to receive said permits.

I am thinking of getting one once I am of age, but only if I stay at U-Albany. This week a student was murdered while trying to run away from people robbing him, one got robbed, and one got away from a robbery.

Jesus christ...you can carry a conceled weapon on campus heath? thats terrifying.

Unless you're walking around with the gun in your hand sweeping the area, how to you suppose you'll use to to protect yourself when your jumped? Chances are they will just steal it from you and shoot you with your own gun.

i would recommend getting your CCW and taking some "self defense handgun" courses at your local range.

the CCW is a must if you plan on concealed carry.

the handgun self defense courses (should) teach you about legal recourses, justification of using deadly force, and obvisouly tactical skills. 

FBI statistics show that over 95% of handgun "encounters" occur under 25 feet.  the statistic could be even higher and the distance even less, im just leaving a little margin of error because i dont have the exact numbers in front of me to quote from.

ya lots of murders happen when people get killed with their own guns. you'd have to get good at using it for intimidation or actually shooting, but i won't get involved, i'm not old enough

If you own a firearm and intend to use it for self defense, you absolutely have to practice using it. Take it out to the range and shoot it at least nine times a year. I would also recommend taking a handgun use/safety course. A CCW is only necessary if you are willing to take the big risk and actually carry the gun with you.

Yeah, u of u campus is gangster as fuck haha. I guess i had some prof who in one of his classes asked who had a concealed weapon and i guess like 1/4 of the class raised their hands. I'm highly considering it. Better safe than dead/fucked up.

i have a 9 mm baby eagle.  i bought it because i like guns, i like shooting them, and want to have one to protect my home.  i take it to the range several times a year.  other than that, it sits right next to my bed cocked, locked, and ready to rock.

Well concealed meaning not in site, i guess not knowing is key. It was some specially class though, its interesting, i'd like to see like a survey about it. I think alot do practice the right.

Oh man... i can't believe how violent it's getting down there. Honestly living someplace else it's easy to ignore, but recently i had a good friend who was in New Orleans, she was shot multiple times in the head and killed. It was a shock and tragic, we are still in agony over her absence in our community. Extreme poverty does crazy things to people... and we as a society need to do something about that. The ironic part is that she was, she was an activist who did a lot for the homeless.

You're taking things into your own hands, literally.  For me personally, i live in an area that also deals with a lot of shootings it's almost all gang related, so i don't feel targeted, but it affects the overall psyche of the neighborhood. We had 8 murders in the course of 2 weeks, all about a mile radius from my house. I don't think i could own a gun, but i can understand your desire to. I just wish that there were other options, other ways to focus our energy to try and make positive change.

really sorry to hear that, world can be extremely fucked up. Always wanted to move to a big city, but starting to think living in a beautiful well to do area (I'm from Saratoga Springs, ny) is just so much safer and enjoyable

I just find that my need for one would be minimal. I know I'd never carry it around on me, and probably the times I'd need it I wouldnt have it. Plus, the added risks of having one in the house... meh. Maybe if I lived in a sketchier area.

I hear you, but at the same time we can't live our lives in fear, or avoid the things that make us afraid. There is some danger, but you face it when you get in your car and drive everyday.
There are amazing things that come with living in a city, culture, diversity, and yes you may see the harder things too, but it's a part of life, part of humanity.
Living in  a suburb, may provide you safety, but it can also segregate you, and it's important to continually challenge ourselves. If you wanted to live in a city don't let fear keep you from it.

One more word about Kirsten, my friend who died. She was an activist and and a beautiful force for change. She was traveling and connecting with different collectives of people who were interested in sustainable living etc. She had a conversation before she left for new orleans, she knew there was danger and she said she was going to face it head on, she was comfortable with the fact that if it was her time to go then it was her time to go. Death is not the end, it's simply a part of life, and to make an end it to make a beginning. Her name lives on through us, and i just hope she can inspire us all to face our fears, challenge them, and try to live and create the change we want to see in the world.

and to clear some shit up..... i dont conceal my gun....thats just fuckin stupid... i keep it in my car when im out and beside my bed when im home in a holster nothing in the chamber but 12 in the mag.... i have a colapasble batton that connects to a belt when im out away from my car or home... it works very well and iv had to threaten once and use it once protecting a lady in the parking lot at wallgreens from some punks late night

wel i own a few guns mainly for business reasons there are many times where i am transporing large amounts of cash.  the one i carry most is a walther p380 its light has good stoping power and is not bulky.  my first advice to you is get rid of the glock they jam to much!!!

any way i see no problem with owning and using a gun, i never take mine when i am out drinking got to be mindful of where you are with it, most campuses dont allow concealed weapons for instance.  most importantly never pull it on somebody unless you plan to use it!

GET RID OF MY GLOCK? R U CRAZY dude glock is the most dependable pistol on the market.... you can stuff it full of sand and shoot it... you can fully submerge it in water and it still shoots.. you can run it over with a car/ toss it aguenst a brick wall and it still shoots...

Yeah, I take safety classes. I use my guns primarily for hunting. (Im not 21 yet so no conceal yet)
But when my dad worked night shift at a gas station a long time ago, drawing his 45 on a robber saved his life

laws very from state to state, but usually for a handgun to be in the car with you, it needs to be unloaded and in a locked trunk.  unless you have a CCW.

o shit i live in saratoga too, lucky its generally a non violent area beside the ocassional robbery and cat down and such. but little to no shootings really ever.



but for the OG poster, i am not of age to carry a concealed weapon(only 18) i dont plan on it, but i do have a knife in my car, and if im in scketchy areas ill keep it with me.

this is the biggest catch 22 of them all.  the vast majority of "altercations" ive been in have involved me drunk or at a bar.  and in neither situation would it be legal to be carrying a handgun.

you own personal car is an extention of your house there is no need to lock it in the trunk.... when u get pulled over you notify the officer that you have a fire arm in the car.... its also a good idea to place it up on the dash of your car and keep your habds on the wheel... if they want to run the vin on the gun thay can do so to make shure its not stolen or used in a crime...

Don't own a handgun at all, but I've been thinking of getting one and applying to carry concealed just to get it before laws tighten up anymore in the future.

Keep a shotgun loaded at home for defense there. Pistol grip with three rubber buck shells followed by four sabot slugs. That's humane right???

if i actually ever got a gun id just get a shot gun and leave it in my house, then i wouldn't have to shoot anyone because it makes the scariest noise ever. But carrying a gun to prevent getting jumped is just stupid, if im going to jump you your not gunna realize what the hell is happening until im running down the alley. Get a knife or something that is less likey to land you in jail for murder

yea, I'm not really afraid of anything like that. I've lived in fairly big cities, and you just get used to it. I don't have fear about this shit, just street smarts and the realization that bringing up a family in areas like this is just not intelligent, fuck diversity.

Please don't take this the wrong way, because your friend sounds more commendable and a better person than just about anyone I've ever heard of...But in my opinion, it sounds like she was a little naive of the grave danger of some of the people she was dealing with. I took a class, with a gay black professor, and he really preached that segregation should never be an issue. What was completely naive about his mentality is that in certain areas, black mother fuckers will kill you for being white and in thier neighborhood. He was just so clueless, and I've been in areas in Albany where black guys started shit with me BECAUSE I was white. It really wasn't your friends time to go, that's not in inspirational mentality because she could be doing so much more to help this world if she was still here. I think she put her heart into what she was doing, but people like this have to keep in mind how fucked up some of the individuals/animals they are dealing with truly are. I just think things like this need to be taken into consideration...and never, never put your life on the line without prerequisite actions for safety, caution and an understanding of the people you're dealing with. Sometimes it's just better to look away, life is too precious. Sorry if that sounds insensitive, it's truly a tragedy what happened to Kirsten, and possibly an avoidable one.

I don't live in a big city, but do you really need a gun.  If you get robbed just give the guy your wallet, so you lose at most a few hundred?  Get a credit card if you don't want to carry to much cash.  But lets say some guy robs you at gunpoint or at knife point.  When the guy sees you pull out your gun he might shoot you or stab you.  Is it worth it to get shot/stabbed/killed over some money?
