In regards to the original question... If you don't even know that digital is a popular medium, maybe you should think twice before dropping a few G's on a camera... but regardless, here's my thoughts.
For fixed lens standard def, DVX100B is the only camera you should really consider, especially for movie making.
For interchangeable standard def, on a reasonably modest budget, the XL2. XL2 is similar to the DVX100B, except that it has native 16:9 widescreen, and interchangeable lenses obviously.
For High def fixed lens cameras, there are tons of options, XHA1, HVX200, HMC150, HPX170, maybe a V1U. The reason i would avoid the FX1000 is because it lacks XLR's which are crucial for filmmaking. Right now, the best deal seems to be the HMC150, but i haven't had the chance to use one yet.
High def interchangeable lens cameras, either the XL-H1(a or s) Z5U, or EX3. I think the EX3 is probably out of your price range, but the XH-H1 and Z5u are both great cameras. I personally prefer the Z5u because it has the option of recording to SD card, but both are great.
You need to do a ton of research if you want to be sure your buying the right cam. You'll find that many of these cameras have or don't have important features that you didn't even know existed.
If all else fails, buy an HV30.
