Options for Insane amounts of external hard drive space

So I am not filming with a Canon Xh-A1 while the picture is amazing one of the issues i face now is storage space for the footage. Each tape takes up 30 GB of storage space. I am editing on a MAC book with a 200 GB 5400 HD, 2.3 GHZ Processor, and 2gb or RAM. I am going to upgrade the Ram to 4 and the hard drive to 360 7200. But my main issue is i need around 4 TB of external storage that i can access fast. So my main two options are buying 4, 1TB Hard drives and conecting firewire. Now my question is i have been reading about Hard Drive towers could i buy one of these for its aorund 100 bux and then just fill it with 1tb internal drives then connect it to firewire to my mac book?

You don't need 4 tb of memory, unless you just want to brag that you do. I have 500gb for my hvx this season, if i run out, fuck i buy a new one. 4 tb seems overkill, are you really going to 133 hours/tapes of footage this year? If not, stick to less memory. As for this RAID stuff, no comment because i don't know.
As for the actual topic, if you can afford 4 hard drives with firewire 800 then do it. I just use firewire 400 and can play everything real time in FCP(minus like 300% speed+ clips, but thats my RAM only 2gb).

Quality differences i'm guessing. My old 1 chip hd camera 30 mins of footage is much smaller than my hvx 30 mins of footage. I feel like the AHX1 would have bigger files than a FX7. My hvx comes to about 30gb = 60min.

Ah of course. My 1chip jvc camera shot mov though, not avi. I guess it all depends, i'd like to know more about this. Sounds like a good thread for dvxuser.

Yeah, mpeg is such a bitch aka fx7 footage. I dealt with it so much this year, i wanted to kill babies.

Last year i shot 50 tapes and this year i plan to come close to doubling what i did last year so yea pretty close. The tapes are the same but the Compression rate that the XH A1 is higher.
