Thoughts on Style

These are just my thoughts..

Obviously skill and style is the best combination.
But honestly i like a 540 with style over a hucked 720 or 900.
i've never tried a 1080 or above, but i would say its the same thing. i know there are tricks out there that are super hard, and people definitely get props for even trying them

same thing with 270 or 450 on. it might be super tech but if it looks like shit i give it to a steezy less technical grind
i am definitely not dissing people who look sketch..i usually look sketch with all tricks. i think most people have to start out sketch and go from there. but for comps, i hope that technical and style are at least equal, if not more points for style..

ye i know what you mean. i can throw 7's, but they look a lot sketchier than my 3's or 5's, i always have my arms stuck out on my 7s and i flail a bit. i mean it feels good to stick a 7, but if i am more comfortable with my 5s then i'd rather stomp those.
for a while i think freeskiing was pretty big on "spin to win," but i think people are beginning to realize most of the athletes throwing down 1440s with so much effort look kinda stupid compared to people stomping 7s or 9s with ease. i mean hell, look at all of the hype that steezy zero spins are getting now.

I agree for the most part. Stylish 5s and 7s are my favorite tricks, and occasionally you see a dope-ass 3 that just blows you away. Tech tricks can be done really well too, though, Durtschi's sw1080 in the backcountry in 44 Days is prolly the best trick I've ever seen, and Schiller/Harlaut's sw1440s both look pretty damn good...

With rails I'd rather see technical shit for the most part, but recently there have been a lot of videos of super stylish basic grinds that I've liked a lot.

was the first 7 done with style? hell no. keep throwing the big tricks, they will get steezy. kang flips are looking better and better. jacobs dub 12s are fucking stomped. wallish is nailing doubles now. and henrik stomped a crazy sw 14. they will get steeze eventually, they always do

PK Hunder's double cork nose-grab with was the steeziest thing ive ever seen. That one trick made me like the possibility of doubles.

if you ever get to see, its always snowing somewhere ( new burton snowboarding movie) you should check out kegan valaki his youtube videos dont justify how steezy he is, he doesnt do the most kanrly tricks but hes style is so dope i brought the movie just for his 5min section, would be so sick if somebody skied like that

the days where style meant slow spins with long grabs are over now. skiing is at a point where guys can throw switch 10's and even 14's sooo smooth with long grabs. Now im not saying there is no place for nice slow spins, but there is only so much you can do to make a 540 stylish, after you have it super clean, the only way to make it better is to stop being an unprogressive little bitch and add some difficulty.

Ya style and making a 5 look smooth is way better then just some hucked 10. To bad kids these days could care less and would tottaly hate on you if you said a smooth 5 was better than a 10. Some of these kids would be my friends. So there just complete idiots : )

its no myth that skiing style has long been in a progressive state of decline since  the advent of one piece oakley  suits and aerialist inspired double flips. Some of the sports most stylie riders like Hall and Olson have adapted a more jock like approach to the sport and all the east coast skiers are so hungry for sponsors and NS glory they seem to be on a drunken spin to win agenda. poopy.

speed of rotation has almost nothig to do with style. Its all about how you can make a trick look smooth and flawless, it's just alot easier to do in small rotations and kids get the idea that is HAS to be a small spin to be steezy.

At my hill we refer to kids like you as the 540 kids cause thats all you do besides rag on the guys trying real tricks

well its a matter of opinion man.. i think slower spins can be harder and look smoother depending on who does them. its a matter of preference.. and no it DOES NOT have to be a small spin to be steezy
I don't rag on people trying "real" tricks.. why do you have to make this an argument?
i am just saying what i like to see. i like huge spins too, but i find a certain beauty in slow smooth spins..just a matter of preference..it has nothing to do with what i can  or can't do..
plus it would be pretty hard to spin a slow 1440 unless you had some insanely large jump. not saying it wouldn't be smooth, which is sick
your assumptions are kind of insulting actually. i love to see all tricks, steezy 180s, zero spins, 1080's, 720's..i don't rag on anyone for trying a big spin even if they look sketchy..bottom line

I agree to an extent dude, but as someone else said, there's a certain beauty to huge, slow spins that are executed beyond the point of being "flawless"... they're just straight up majestic. I don't dislike big spins, in fact they're fucking awesome. Durtschi's sw1080s, Henrik's sw1440s, even Schiller's old-ass sw1440... all bomb as hell. And doubles are blowing my mind right now, they're getting stomped to shit and they look amazing. That doesn't mean slow huge spins are out of style whatsoever though.

Yeah I've never even tried anything above a 5 because I know it would be mad hucked, I just like practicing 1s,3s,and 5s with as many grabs as i can off as many jumps as i can.  also I do em switch too, but yeah fuck huck, its also kinda dangerous too

I'd say that I'm a fan of both. However, I do agree, if something is fairly tech, but not smooth, and something is just super uber steezy, i'm definitely going to go with the steeze factor. Although, if somebody pulls a greasy 5 or 7, and another guy pulls a gnarly 10 or something, I'd probably pick the 10. I agree with above, TD's sw 10 in 44 days was dirty stylin'! Also, going for a throw-back, Mike Clarke's sw 10's that he kept throwing down at the US Open last year, were so corked and so tweaked, those actually looked like an orgasm in the air!

But you did nail it when you said people start off sketch. As a rule, the more spins you do, the sketchier they'll be. The main reason that 7's and 5's are steezier than bigger spins, is because people have been doing them longer and more. The only way you can get to spinning a 1080+ is if you work up to it. By the time you get to spinning 3 rotations or more, you should best hope that your 5's and 7's are stomped. That's the main reason, is because people have been doing bigger spins for less time, and have less experience with them.

most of the big spins are just natural in the progression of the sport..someone pulls a 5 mute and stomps it, its only natural that they then want to make it more difficult and challenge themselves to try a 7 mute...I think that there is a place for big spins but it has to be with a balance of slow small spins as well...like have a sw 10 or 12 but also add in a cork 3 or sw cork 5...
