I just started University and I'm taking engineering.  Although my marks all through highschool were great im not feelin it on the calculus at all this year.  If I fail out of Calc I have to doa bunch of foolish shit to be able to get into second year.  Because of this I'm considering moving west and skiing and workin on a resort somewhere if at all possible. I was just wondering if anyone has any stories and such about workin on resortsor around ski resorts so i can get a peek before i make any big decisions.  all i want to do is skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I hear ya man, i go to CU and went in for engineering, im now transferring into business so i have more days to ski, maybe don't drop out but look for a transfer to a school out west and get out of engineering, if you don't have the motivation its just not gonna work

yah engineering is a bitch, i am motivated to do it and all but it gets to be fucked with the calculus here. the university i go to decided to jump right to second year level calc for the first years so we will be "ready" and it is redic. maybe i will transfer out west, that would be sickk

man, i don't even know how to answer this, but here it goes:

I understand you're obiously an intelligent guy with a knack for skiing. You want to continue to go to college and stuff, but you're really into skiing and that's all you want to do. I completely understand your situation. I would say that you really have to put a couple days of hard thinking into this because if you just choose one way or the other right now, you might wish you hadn't. So, really think about it, put your heart into it, imagine what you want to do in life. Do you want to do something that you will need a particular educution to continue with, or work a job that doesn't have a huge prerequisite. Imagine what you could acheive by moving west, do you want to go pro? could you find a job out here (west)? would you have a place to stay? you really have to think about all of these things and put all possible variables into place (i.e. money, shelter, jobs).

but really, you just have to think about it and really get deep and see what you want to do in life, and i'm sure if you do that then you will be happy with your choice

shit even tho you didnt know how to put it it was still good advice, i think if i moved out west to ski and work it would be temporary and i would stay with relatives for the first bit but in the end im gonna figure out something in uni anyways, even if engineering doesnt work

failed out of plymouth last spring, moved out to salt lake this summer and i aint looking back. been fucking sweet and the mountains aren't even open yet. you really can't be lazy though, two kids have moved out of our house so far because they weren't able to support themselves.

i think you should finish school.....
i dont even remember how old i was when i started thinking about moving out west (from the midwest) not just to ski but for the mountains... my parents told me that i moved to CO (where i got into a UC school) that they would cut me off ($).... soooo basically i ended up going to a school closer to home that had a sick hill and park... stuck it out for 5 years....

after i finished .. i moved to south lake tahoe.... worked the resorts for one year... then found a job in my field... and my boss is so cool that he lets me ski almost everyday... work splits (even though it should be a 9-5 job)... and i love what i do.. and make pretty good $ for this town...

basically ... i am really glad i stuck it out and went to school where i did (most of the people i rode with back in the midwest ended up moving out as well)... ...

there are a lot of people that i know here that dropped out... and though they like working where they do now (resort jobs) what happens when you are over it??  or move or... whatever the sit... will you really want to go back to school then??? doubt it...

good luck... and at least think about it for a week or two...!

Yea i wanna go work at a ski resort for a couple years after highschool learning how to make jumps and rails set ups, then go into school for business and sales. Open up a rope tow mountain full of jumps and jibs only charge like 10-15 dollar lift tickets and see where that takes me!

you go to dalhousie dont you? (saw you post in the regionals). Im in second year engineering there. I know that first year calc can be tough but its doable. I made it though last year and I skied at least once if not more a week during the winter. Id say stick it out if can manage and ski as much as possible. But if engineering really isnt your thing I would not suggest staying in it because it will be no fun.

If you stay this winter where do you plan on skiing out here?

i transferred from CU for a couple years to GET AWAY from good skiing to make sure i got good grades

now im graduating in december and moving back out to either CO or WY, i cant waaaaaaaaaaaaaait

yea dude, you ever watch DC Mountain Lab, I would pay 10-15 max to ski that and and its a sick place, but theres only so much shit you can build on a rope tow mountain. You ever been to whaleback.

Thats pretty much what im looking for once i finish school, work at the resorts or for a while and just ski and have a good time once im out of school, then use my degree to get a better job i enjoy that still allows me to ski, so basically im jealous of what you've accomplished its what i want to do.

this is more advice on your math class than anything else...  in high school i loved math and wasn't too bad at it...  i got a very high score on the math act and a's in my math classes... then college came around and i was stoked because all of my hard work in hs let me skip about three math classes(which not only saves money on tuition but gives more time for other classes).  my first day of class was terrible because i couldn't remember anything from calc so i decided to take an easier class.  it would've been just fine but the materials were really easy for me so i never went to class because i figured i would remember it all from hs.  i couldn't have been more wrong and i pretty much failed that class... and now i'm stuck with two additional math classes because of that situation.  sorry for the long post but i just really regret not making an effort...

cliff notes: do everything you can to not fail your math class.

yeah im not trying to make a whole entire resort here
just a jib park with maybe 2 jumps and a bunch of rails/boxes in a close secluded spot.
I think my main concern is getting the start up money lol. Im pretty sure ive got a couple friends that are down and one of them is gonna be an engineer so we'll see.

hah yah im goin to DAL now and I got a pass to Martock so i dont have to spend all the gas money to get to wentworth.  calc is gettin better anyways cuz our dousche of a prof who taught us more about her personal life than calc got swtiched and shit is goin a bit better. where you riding this winter

Hey man,

I think you should stick with engineering. I went to UC and majored in engineering. I skied atleast once a week and more on breaks and stuff. I had a great time and made great friends. It was hard as shit and definitely isn't for everyone but after you graduate you will be sitting pretty. However if you try to ski alot I dont think you will get like a 3.5. I graduated but, with a C average and now I am kind of stuck without an engineering job in a recession. I also moved to FL after a girl I dated a long time and now I hate it but thats another story and I think I will figure that out soon. anybody got a cheap room in Boulder?

Ill be at martock as well this winter. I got a name of a good calc tutor if you need one. I have them as a tutor this year and there the reason im passing math.
