last time i was at mammoth at the bottom of the park midsize park i remember this dude who had a big smile on his face watching people come off the last jump. And his equipment was gaper and he probly wasnt too good at sking but he seemed to be getting so much happyness from watching the us hit the jumps. I guess we were like blowing his mind or something with the new style. I think we all didnt have poles maybe that was part of it. seriously it made me feel so good about skiing, i hope the world doesnt run out of people like that.

That reminds me of this time that i saw this gaper going down a run switch with the biggest smile on his face. He wasn't looking over his shoulder or anything he was just going down backwards, dragging his poles, and having the time of his life with his family. It made me happy.

yeah dude i kinda got the feeling from warren miller films that old people hated the new wave of skiing but now i realize that most old people think its just as awesome as we do

ive met lots of people who basiclly ski groomers and such and they seem really stoked on newschool i think gapers are awesome as long as they dont wreck the lips of jumps or stand in the landings

this is actually a good thread...  nice because theres been a lot of negative stuff on ns lately.  and yeah i agree as long as their not doing anything dangerous or ruining parks...  they are what keeps ski resorts alive.

Agreed.  I get way more stoke from gaypers than anyone else.  Sometimes I even take runs with them.  Ihave to sacrifice them, of course, but they get a few good turns in before they feel the burred edge of wrath.

Totally, they allow me to be a real ski bum.  Last year I'll never forget this gaper family at the lodge saying how amazing their pow day was because, "everywhere people were backflipping off the ridges..."  They are stoked on the simplest things.

^Agreed, i remember a couple years ago my first season in the park just doing a 180 on a small jump, a gaper came up to me after at the bottom with a big smile on his face telling me how awesome it was. At the same time i hate the crew from jersey that year that went into the step up with no speed, hit the wall, continued to climb up the step up, and stand on the landing in their jeans while i yelled at them to move out of the fucking way, they just stared back up the hill at me and didn't move.

word, i often go skiing with my dad and his friends, and every time i lap the park they all stand off to the side and watch me and cheer for me. i could takeoff and flail my arms all over the place and they'd still cheer as if it was something epic. my dad has video of me overshooting the landing two seasons ago, and you can hear them cheering from the chairlift while i'm in midair, then when i land they call my dad and i on the radio and say stuff like "go kevin!" stuff like that makes my day haha!

i remember one time i was in the park this little gaper kid just kept on following me around and watching me and he was so amazed cuz he didnt think it was possible to slide rails with skis haha

well noted.... how about the ones that buy all the new baggy gear and park skis then suck ass when there trying show off in the park. or the ones you have to stabalize untill ski patrol get to you. i love those

the ones that get hurt halfway down the pipe so no one can ride there well earned hike....

or the ones that come slaming into you at 40 mph cuz they were too good to learn how to stop before coming into the park..love those

i like the ones that come and watch up ride but when they get above there skill level they raly are frustrating and dagerous

the only things i disagree with here is the part about gapers who get hurt in the pipe. even pros can get hurt in the pipe, it's not something that only gapers do. besides, we learn from our mistakes.

nothing i love seeing more than a person who is having a fucking incredible time doing anything, no matter how good or bad they are, they don't care, they're having fun. i can never get mad at gapers who have that mindset, maybe they cut me off or ask about my water skis but they're loving their day and genuinely having the time of their life. there are also bitchy gapers, they suck, but many gapers fuel the ski industry and are extremely nice people who grin ear to ear while falling down the mountain

5 years ago i was that lid who was grinning ear to ear while crashing on a 50-50 on a box (TOTALY gaper style) dressed to fit the part too but i loved it even if kids would bitch at me while in the park. i would always look out of gondola at loon watching snowboarders and wanting to do that, until one day i saw a kid do an insanely slow cork 5 tail and from there on in i stuck to the skis.  

i would always watch kids doing 180s and thimking WOW they are cool, now all i can hope is that some little kid thinks the same thing about me when i do stuff in the park.

p.s. i was 8 and was my first year skiing.

the one time a gaper made me happy, well it wan't even a gaper just a cool guy actually who rode the mountain cause he was good at it. He saw me drop switch of a cliff and i pop regular at this little lip right there. and i saw him pointing his pole at me and talking to his friend about that, with his hat  covered in snow. And also there were lots of whale humps along the side of a run early season and it just snowed somehow and i rode it like a ridge going really fast. Everyone just watched me on the lift in awe. I can't say we have good skiers on my hill. Just tourists from NYC

talking to adult gapers on the lift is always fun. its cool to meet old guys who will tell you their war stories or people who are successful and share their tales. i always get pumped when i get on the lift with an engineer and we talk about stuff like that cuz thats what i wanna do

HAHAHA me too! i love talking to the gapers, at my home mountain the lift goes over the park, and they are always like WOW!! can you do that?! and im like yess sir! ahahaha once a gaper told me hed give me a beer (out of his fanny pack) if i could teach him to flip, i was game but he got scared, gave me the beer anyways tho! YAY!

speaking of people that make your day just awesome, last season i was hanging out while one of my friends taught, and i saw this guy on a sit ski. i started talking to him and ended up taking a couple runs with him. he hadnt skied for ages, but it was just so sick hanging out with him. those sit skis can seriously move, and even though the guy had a couple wipe outs, i could just tell he was having so much fun. meeting someone that was not going to let being paralyzed get in the way of his enjoyment of life was just ridiculously sick.

+1 great thread.

i love skiing because of little things like this, its just the fact that people are stoked on life when they ski, no matter what is going on. a gaper couldhave just cought an edge and ate shit, but i'll be damned if they don't let that get in their way of having a good time skiing and watching other people ski.
stoke is great. and the season is almost here, get ready boys and girls.

word, i get super stoked off those people that stand off to the side, and just chill and watch all the kids throw down. i love stuff like that.  for instance, the pipe at my hill runs right beside our main chairlift. so basically everybody on the lift can see your run. and all the time you will get on the life and people will be like " ive been watching you all night, your a great skiier." i never know what to say but i get so stoked off of it and i always remember the people who compliment my skiing. its one of the thing that i truly love about skiing, the community.

i love meeting old guys who are so stoked on turns, its hilarious but its true theres something about the perfect turn in powder that just makes you forget evrything and just be super stoked for the next turn.

man im so stoked for the season, dangerously high levels of stokage

Word, one of my favourite moments from last year was when I did a mute of this chunk of ice the mountain was calling a hip right by the lift, and this little kid and his friends on rentals goin up the lift were like YOU ROCK, DUDE. A few runs later though, they proceeded to block off 1 of the 4 rails for about 20 mins. Also I was trying to learn opposite 3s and I flailed, overshot and landed at like 290 degrees, ski popped off and this old guy on the lift went "That was really good, you almost got it!!!"

such a love hate thing. when you put it that way then yes i hate them, like when the ruin lips, stnad around the jumps( like you said) and other shit when they just ruin things and piss you off.

but then there's the gapers we all know and love. The one's that when you do a 3 they go " WOW, that was sick" or tap there gaper buddies shoulder and " yo did you see that guy, he is soo good" and it just make's you feel good.

I like it because all my friends are gaper ass snowboarders( well not all but the one's that do snowsports) and they always tell me how "pro" i am and shit. it makes me feel so good even though to be honest im probably a bit below average ( for my age and skill level, comparing to other kids on NS)

Gapers are good for the most part I don't do much park as you may have seen from my threads. I do consider myself a good skier and all that. However I have a bit of a gaper side. Whenever I see someone do a cool trick or anything it is pretty cool to watch, because if you don't know what your looking at it looks awesome. Same goes for my dad very good skier, but knows nothing about park skiing or anything so besides doing a 360 so any semi complicated trick blows his mind.

I love gapers, they're usually the most stoked to ski as they only ski once or twice a year and are just super happy to ski. The ones I don't like are the ones who use lips as jumps or are just disregarded to anyones personal space in the lift line and are just pushy and think they're the best because they've got on snow accommodation and paid $3000 a week for their 5 star accommodation. Other than that gapers are sick and I love talking to them on the lift and they're so stoked on skiing and are so happy.

As a gaper I also love gapers. I'll always remember my first day hitting 8" of fresh snow with really bumpy packed snow beneath alongside Lumberjack at Copper. I came out of two trees that are relatively close together in the middle of the groomed section of the run, got a tiny bit of air and got a cheer from the lift. I then hit the powder and they cheered me on even more as I felt like I could fall over at any time.

I've also been cheered coming out of trees and when I first started learning how to ski switch on a really mellow pitch.

After getting cheered in the little powder stash I always made it a point to cheer for other people too. It just makes everything a little more fun, and maybe just a little bit awesome.
