Freestyle Skiing
Purpose: To inform the audience about the sport of Freestyle Skiing.
Central Idea: Freestyle Skiing is a challenging, exciting and rewarding activity.
Introduction: You feel your heart pounding faster and faster. You are full of adrenaline and energy. The only thing cooling you down is the cold wind biting at your face. Finally, you decide to drop in. You turn your skis and let gravity take you toward your destination. As you approach the lip you brace yourself, keeping your body pointed forward. You wind up your arms and just as you takeoff into the air you begin to spin, watching the ground twenty feet below as you fly through the air. Right as you are about to land you snap a final one hundred and eighty degree rotation and touch down backwards on the steep slope of the landing. Your heart is beating even faster as you ski away knowing that you have just landed the trick you have been working on for weeks. All of these sensations are a part of Freestyle Skiing, a sport which is extreme, challenging, risky and very rewarding.
Transition: Although the sport of skiing has existed is organized form for over one hundred years, in the form of ski jumping, ski racing and recreational downhill skiing, Freestyle Skiing, as it is known today is a relatively new type of the sport. I would like to share with you, the basics concepts of the sport and why I and many others participate in it.
I. What is Freestyle Skiing?
A. Freestyle Skiing involves jumping, sliding on things such as rails or other man made and natural objects as well as skiing in the back country, all while performing various maneuvers.
B. General Background of Freestyle Skiing
1. Freestyle Skiing became popular about ten years ago.
2. Before that time skis were not really suitable for these kinds of maneuvers.
a. Skis had one raised tip and one flat tail and were generally quite stiff.
b. The invention of a twin tip ski, which was designed for freestyle skiing greatly assisted the sport.
C. Equipment
1. Twin Tip Skis are designed for freestyle skiing.
a. They are softer, more flexible and designed for forward and backwards skiing.
b. They are also designed to withstand a lot of impact that comes with the sport.
2. Boots and Bindings are also specially designed.
a. Bindings are made more durable for freestyle.
b. Boots are softer and more flexible so as to absorb impact.
Transition: Although equipment is very important, the safety and enjoyment of the sport depends on the ability and knowledge of the skier.
II. Description of the Sport
A. Location and Maneuvers.
1. Freestyle Skiing generally occurs in a special ski trail at a ski resort called a Terrain Park.
2. Various tricks are performed in the air.
a. Skiers launch themselves off of jumps which are called kickers or booters.
b. Once in the air the skier can spin, flip, grab their skis or any combination of those.
i. There are no rules to this and anything can be done. Hence the name Freestyle.
ii. In a competition, however, skiers are judged on the difficulty and style of their tricks in the air.
3. Other tricks are performed on rails, boxes, tables, logs or other objects.
a. Skiers grind rails and other objects by jumping and then sliding on them.
b. Other objects are tapped or touched in different ways.
B. Types of Freestyle Skiing
1. Slopestyle involves a course of jumps and rail features.
2. Halfpipe involves skiing in a half pipe, and launching out of the sides and performing the same tricks as would be done off of a regular jump.
3. Urban involves grinding hand rails and other objects in a city or any off mountain environment.
4. Backcountry involves skiing very steep terrain and often jumping off cliffs and flipping or spinning.
C. Competition
1. Includes local, state, regional, national and international formats.
2. Important events are US Open and the X Games as well as many Invitationals.
3. Freestyle Skiing is likely to be an Olympic Sport within the next ten years.
Transition: You might be wondering why a skier would want to go beyond simply making turns in the snow while going down the mountain. Certainly that is fun as well, but there are many reasons why I and many others enjoy jumping and sliding on our skis.
III. Why would a skier want to participate in Freestyle Skiing.
A. For me freestyle skiing is a very powerful form of self expression.
1. It involves the fusion of a tool (the ski) and your body in the accomplishment of unique maneuvers.
2. I feel that this is a sport, a form of entertainment and a form of art.
B. It is a way to conquer your fears both on and off the mountain.
1. The sport involves serious risks such as various injuries and even death.
2. Every new maneuver or trick that I learn is usually accompanied by some hesitation or fear. Overcoming these feelings is very rewarding and helps build confidence which applies both on and off the slopes.
C. It’s a great way to spend time with friends or even alone.
1. Though the sport has serious competition it is fun to ski with your friends and compete with them in a friendly environment.
2. It is challenging and intrinsically rewarding in that it can bring satisfaction simply because you progress in ability.
D. Finally it combines the incredible mountain environment with an adrenaline rush like most people have not felt.
Conclusion: As you can see the sport of Freestyle Skiing is a passion for me. Hopefully the information I have provided has served to give you an introductory understanding of this activity and why I and others like me enjoy it so much. Although it is possible to participate in serious competitions, in the end Freestyle Skiing provides a way to challenge yourself on a daily basis in the beautiful mountain environment and learn strategies of success which can translate to similar results outside of the sport. Of course, if you are not already a skier, and are interested in trying this sport, I recommend learning to ski comfortably down the mountain first, and then when ready trying out freestyle. Hopefully you will try this sport some day, and see the benefits I am telling you about for yourself.
