Have you ever bought, owned, used or made a website? tips and advice

So i am thinking about getting a website off the ground, i have a few ideas brainstorming. Ive contacted a couple designers. But i was wondering in terms of hosting, where did you guys buy from, how much. Can you give me any tips that will make the process of starting a website any simpler/smoother. Karma of course++

its very likely that some flash will be oriented into the site, but yah ive already checked out godaddy, i have known about them for a while, and i know they are a solid choice

I host on awardspace, it`s free and has tons of space, no ads and all that good stuff. i don`t have a domain name but im not really finished the site so its not a big deal

I have developed and currently own and operated two websites:

A fun scavenger hunt type site, still kind of in the works. Quite successful, has good user base. It also has one of the chillest forums you will ever find.

Blog I just started a week or two ago. Haven't promoted it yet, still working on getting a layout made and getting some good base content. Check this out if you're interested in boats and watersports

I currently have a few more website ideas in the works. For hosting, I use www.hostmonster.com . They have good customer service, and I have found their interface to be very user friendly. The rates aren't bad either. I have registered both of my domains through godaddy.

If you ever need any help, or may have any questions feel free to hit me up. I'm always looking to help out a fellow NS'er. Also, I'm also looking for a partner if you ever need someone to help you out with one of your ideas.

Oh yeah, also here are a few other pointers I forgot to throw into my other post.

Captial- Make sure you have sufficient capital before taking on a venture like this, it will make your process go much more smoothly, also save some money for the unexpected, and advertising.

Advertising- The best advertising is word of mouth. Depending on what type of site you have determines how effective this method will be. If you have a store for example, you may need to resort to more traditional means of advertising, or just have killer sales and promotions

Design- When it comes to designing your site, get it done right. Even if that means spending some extra money. It will save you a lot of time, money, and frustrations down the road. I can tell you this from personal experience.

Failure- Don't be afraid to fail. I've done it, and it happens to the best of us. It's honestly the best way of learning. Even though it's costly and I've wasted hundreds of dollars, it was worth ever sent. I have started two other websites that failed before the current two that I have open. I'm only 17, but I've learned a lot, and I'm getting ready to launch my fifth website.

god damnit, i was talking to some designers and they were telling me it would be 1000+...yah maybe not on a student budget, thanks to everyone for theyre help. Can anyone else lend some advice to get a good flash based website made

First use photoshop to make a cool design, edit it in dreamweaver, throw in some flash and your good. Also i would learn PHP, it makes your site so much cooler. as for hosting, i use LowBudgetHost.com, theyre mad cheap and alotta disk space. By cheap i mean less than $30 a year

I generally recommend Bluehost to people who have potential of having big audience.

I use ICDSoft. Have been for 5 years now and they have awesome customer service and pretty much upgrade me for free every time I ask for something.

I highly advice against godaddy. Worst Cpanel I have worked with. Also, so many people use it and they have way to few customer support people. I have had it take 3+ days for domain name transfers. So annoying.

As far as a flash site goes. If you are looking for solid flash, most flash designers will go by project but estimate it at $50 to $80 an hour.

I will say that the trend is definately moving away from flash sites. Even though XML is great, it still doesnt quite offer all the functionality of html/css/programming.

My sites typically are solid php with html/css templates with flash headers, photo galleries, etc.


If you are looking for an inexpensive site, try posting it in craigslist stating you are looking for a student to do it and that you can pay but not much. However you would be willing to contact their professor and fill out any paper work they would need for internship/project study credit.

I know I got 4 credits for designing a site for a non profit. I would have way rather done that than spent 20 hours a week on how to use illustrator.

i bought mine through network solutions. It works fine and isnt to much. i wouldnt recomend it though cuz their site is hard to navigate and they're always trying to sell you more shit.

Flash is the way to go for crazy animated sites with video and sound all over the place, but not necessary for a photo gallery. It will be more expensive to have made or take more time to learn than HTML/CSS site.

http://www.grantgunderson.com/ is done with Flash using a package you can buy from http://www.evrium.com/store/. I met the guy who created it (he's in Toronto too) and his company seems to have their act together.

The cheapest decent hosting I've seen is 1and1.com's $3.99/month packages. I'm paying $12/month with DreamHost and I'm happy aside from their slow MySQL servers which you probably won't need to worry about for a while.

cant karma you any more, but ill send you a  feedback, i didn't realize you were from TO as well. Anyways right now i am learning to use flash, it has a lot of potential. I am also thinking of implementing some free flash picture viewers, one is specific:http://www.airtightinteractive.com/photos/ or http://www.airtightinteractive.com/projects/autoviewer/app/ . I might also be trying to be able to add some zooming in effects like at tristan's site here: http://http://www.tristanshu.com/site2008/ . If anyone  knows another way to do that effect it would be greatly appreciated . My dad is knowledgeable in the html, javascript side of things, so he can help. So i am just going with putting in the time for free disign for now, maybe in a year or two when i think you need a more complex site i can look into it. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated

Have you contemplated getting joomla as your cms and just getting a flash-orientated template and then using flash components/modules to make it how you want it to be?

yes that has been considered, but at a first version of the site i plan of it being mostly just flash based, you can do a lot with it and right now it meets my needs, although undoubtedly in a year or two it won't.

Anyone else with experience in Flash, all help is much appreciated.
