Ski bum food and nutrition

What’s a dirt bag to do? Obviously you can’t live on ramen and ketchup, but with high food prices all over, and even higher prices in mountain towns how does anyone on this site that is strapped for cash eat up when they are a bum?

ramens, kd, banana, veggie, eggs... the ideal would be to become vegeterian during the ski season but not everybody would do that....   on the mountain just make yourself a tomato soup with 2 small bag of ketchup they are free at any restaurant ... then find some hot water and your set.

if ever your really hungry and and broke, go to the caf, get a bunch of ketchup(free), pour some hot water from the coffee machine(free) and grab some crackers from the soup area(again free) mix the ketchup with the water and add some crakers and there you go! gourmet tomato soup!!

Mooch off of people in the lodge. Camp out by the garbage and if someone is about to ditch uneaten fries, make your move. It's amazing how much good food gets thrown out at ski hills by the wealthier sort of person (meaning anyone who can afford ski hill food prices). If you get lucky you might score a burger or something more substantial than fries. Also, there's usually a place in the back in grocery stores with all the "reduced for quick sale" stuff. This means the food is probably nearly past its date, but that's not really a bad thing.

milk is probably the most expensive thing i buy regularly, you can make pasta pretty cheap, just buy in larger quantities and only get meat if it's on sale, chicken and pork are usually pretty cheap if need meat. burritos can also be cheap, just get big sale packs of chicken breast, rice and beans, game set match. one advantage of cooking large quantities at a time is that you can make a quick meal when youre tired just but sticking it in the microwave.

buy a huge ass jug of weight gainer that is made to be mixed with water. You can get more than your daily recomended calories (and a lot of protein in most types) for like $1.50 a day if you buy a 5lb jug. You still have to eat real food but this helps

Yogurt - cheap shit

Nanners - Cheap fruit

water, not bottled (you can also buy the little packs of crystal light or lemonade to add to it)

cook ramen noddles but dont add the packet of shit, Instead drain the water out and add butter. Insta cheap pasta.

make trail mix. Most small grocery stores or health food stores have nuts that you can get, add some m&ms or chocolate chips and chex mix or granola to it.

i know people have said it but by things on sale that you can keep...freeze it...buy lost of pasta....you can usually find pasta on sale for like 2 boxes for $1....make your own make and cheese and buy cheese on sale...your just going to melt it anyway. and pasta is crabs which is good for skiing! you can usally get soup on sale...and tomatoe soup and white rice is amazing!!! great on cold ski days!!! smiple snadwich or salad.

or you can try and cheat for the good things like fruits and veggies. most sotres now when you weight your fruits adn veggies you cna print out a scew so you can scan it yourslef in slef check out...just type in a number of something a little less expensive adn print it ou and do slef check. if anyone asks just be like omg i must have typed in the wrong number.

make your own bread. you can buy the dough already made for liek 5 loafs....make one and freeze the rest. its wicked easy just let sit and rise and then bake.

and this might sound crazy...but buy snacks at christmas tree shop!! they rock!!

a bigass two gallon, maybe 1.5 jar of pickels at costco are $3.69...its a steal like thirty pickles. plust the pickle juice can be drank for keepin cramps from getting you and making you fall off the heavenly chairlift onto rocks. RIP whoever that was

free water = buy a bottle of water and just refill it at water fountains
beans / burritos
cold cuts & wheat bread (sssooo much cheaper than buying lunch at the mountain)
or to get free gourmet meals at fancy restaurants do this:
go with a friend to a restaurant, but come in a little staggered.  Order the most expensive thing from the menu, eat it, and hav ur friend pretend to be choking or hav a heart attack
then say "IT'S OK I'M A DOCTOR! Someone help me get him to my car!"  Get in ur car with ur firend and drive away laughing ur ass off and with a free delicious meal in ur stomachs.

or u could use a sleazier method:
find a restuarant that has the system where u take the recepit to the front to pay
order a really expensive meal and have ur friend come in a little ways through the meal, ur friend will only order a few cups of coffe or something.  when u leave take the recepit for the coffee (or small item) and pay for it  then hav ur friend  look up from his paper and "realize" that u payed for his stuff and he's stuck with an expensive meal.  hav him say that this isnt his , and hav him politely (but firmly) say that he won't pay for what's not his.  the waiter will prob be sympathetic and remember that he only got coffe and voila, u only payed for a few cups of coffee for an entire meal.

PBJ. Shit is dirt cheap, and it is no good cooking in bulk and then freezing it if yoiu are living in your car and have to freezer. PBJ has literally everything you need if you use good wheat bread. Simple and complex carbohydrates for short and long term energy, protein, some vitamins. Good stuff.

i lived in the mt. baker parking lot in my car for 5 days and did it on a loaf of bread, a quaker thing of oats, a thing of peanut butter, a 30 of pbr, and whatever i could sweet talk out of the girls in the lodge. life was actually pretty good. they gave me newspapers too, and i had a pretty dope time chillin out in the parking lot by myself in a raging blizzard. what i would give to do that over again...

i cook fried rice with rice and eggs and any combo of meat and veggies if avaliable and its pretty cheap....and tates really good and you can season to your liking with just about anything

I can't do Ramen, shit's played and unfilling. You want the real deal:

Baked potatoes and cheese.

10 pound bag of potatoes, $3.59; 2 pounds of cheese, $4.99 to 5.99. That is a week of food. And a handle of black velvet once or twice a week. $14.99 to $29.98; no mixers or chasers. A week of healthyish food (way more than Ramen and filling) and booze for less than $40.

Few can stomach it. The few who can are gods.

Or just get a job that provides you food. I show up at 12 and have free lunch at 12:30.

^that baked potato idea is a good one, need easy food ideas to cook in the RV.

the way i get food for free is thru my college meal plan. I use the grab and goes before I go anywhere, its like 1 entree and 3 sides including a drink. Get 4 italian heros, 8 things of pudding, and 4 1/2pints of milk. gets me thru a weekend of skiiing/camping, plus it gives me some extra money for booze/gas/nug

i was thinking that too, and btw, on our restaurants a small bag of ketchup is 0.45 €, and i am sure youre not getting boiled water for free,

but still, everyone who loves eating ketchup with water, go for it, lol

that was pretty funny.

last winter i saved a ton of money by eating pasta, cheap pasta sauce, canned tuna, pb & j, the giant cans of quaker oatmeal, and salads from the city market salad bar every once in a while. oh, and whatever fresh fruits and veggies were cheap when i visited the grocery store. you don't need to drastically alter your diet to save money during the winter, you just need to be a smart shopper. buy what's on sale. don't get name brand shit. and stop eating at restaurants. with those simple rules you'll have plenty of money to buy lift tickets or to spend on jim beam and pbr.
