I already posted this in the Media & Arts forum but I figured i might have more luck in NSG. So I'm trying to get into making beats and possibly some electronic music. I just got Reason 4 and Recycle. Is there anyone on here that uses these programs? Do you have any suggestions/hints/tips/tricks that will help me out? I'm a straight up beginner to this--I've figured out some of the basics by reading the manual and messing around in the programs but progress is slow. Also, I'm looking to get a MIDI controller for under $100, any suggestions? I have a macbook if that makes a difference.

I tried fruityloops i believe, but it was pretty confusing. try youtube, i've seen videos on reason and fruityloops and they were helpful in terms of at least knowing where to start. as for the controller, i would save up and just get a jazzmutant lemur haha. but really, i don't know what you should start with for a controller. cruise ebay or craigslist. good luck and let us hear what you come up with

I've used Reason 3 a lot, they are essentially the same program. What do you need help with? You're going to have to be pretty specific, Reason is the most complex program I've ever used.

Hey, I don't use Reason (yet), but looking at youtube videos and reading the manuals as well as messing around will definitely help in learning the program. As far as MIDI controllers, search for an M-Audio Axiom, I think theres one for around $100. I have one and love it. Comes with keys, 360 degree knobs, and should have 4-8 drum pads on it.

if i were you i would download a cracked version of ableton live 7 and use rewire to run reason with it. people like reason because it has really good soft synths and you can pull out really good sounds out of it. the sequencer isn't the greatest but thats why you should rewire it to ableton which has a really good sequencer.
as for midi controller. i've used the axiom and its really nice. but right now, you don't really need a midi keyboard. first you gotta learn the ins and outs of reason, use the draw tool to make your midi beats.

Thanks for all the help. +Karma for errrrbody. I was unaware that you could make midi beats with the draw tool can you do this in the reason sequencer too? And can that be done for samples? I was under the impression that the easiest way to make sample beats is to load a patch into the sampler and use a midi controller to play slices. I'm working on ableton now.
