Broken Brakes

Hey posted this in Gear Talk but didn't get to many responses.

Landing wrong switch and tearing the brakes out from your bindings is like the worst feeling when your having a great day riding. It happened to me too many times last season with my Rossi Scratch bindings. Around 3-4 times. Does anyone know how to prevent this or what bindings correct this from happening. I picked up a pair of Marker Jester's for this coming season cause I heard they great in the park. Hopefully soon brakes ripping out from bindings will never happen cause 15 bucks a brake adds up.

ya dude this happened to me at hood summer and my ski took off down the hill and almost hit sammy carlson
i noticed when it happened it was on switch landings at least for me but then again i got my bindings for 80 bucks so i wasnt expecting much

What i dont get how that can happen they should have been high enough up that they wouldnt catch on the snow

A bunch of my friends have had that problem but I never had, even with the same bindings as them. It usually happens when you land on your face switch and the healpiece releases and the breaks deploy when you still have your weight on the ski. The easiest way to deal with it is to crank up your dins a bit so you don't release as easily.

im talking bout when you land switch off a jump and your bindings release because its not a perfect landing. maybe there's bindings with stronger brakes because the Rossi ones are plastic and kinda cheap. they just rip right out when your going switch, they eject and your weight is still on the ski

this happened to me alot last season aswell-im never buying rossi binders again. i just got some sth12's cause they have a flex zone in the heel peice to avoid this very problem

happened all the time on my salomon bindings. I would land switch and the brakes would just explode. It happened with my S810s like every 2 weeks and it happened once with S912s that I had for 3 weeks.

It happened to me a few times last year, I didn't want to stop skiing so I just stomped my foot back in there and it kinda worked for a while, it even lasted a pretty heavy landing on a 5, but it couldn't take a long 180, so again it's the middle of the day, this time my boot wouldn't go back in so I just took it off for the day. It's gonna happen with any break out there, the only thing to do is try to land properly. I also bought a bunch of breaks in advanced and kept one in my bag. If you search online you can find breaks for like $5-$10.

Yeah that happened to me about a dozen times when i had those shitty line bindings, i just rocked the one ski with out a break, it was a bitch to chase after but better than paying 15 bucks to get new ones put on.

I had the same problem with Markers last year until I put the DIN up. Luckily my local ski shop would replace them for free, but I still ended up using nearly their entire supply of spare brakes. I've heard that someone, I think it's 4FRNT, designs their bindings so the brakes release in a different way to avoid catching when bailing in switch but I don't know anyone who has firsthand knowledge of this.

I think it is just the fact you have rossi scratches ;)

I had them all last season brake broke about 6 times. I give up with them, worst binding ever bought they can never remain unbroken.

yeah dude i also have scratch bindings and the brakes broke literally 11 times last year, trying to pick up a new pair of bindings for this season... and they wont be rossi's!

if your woried about it take the brakes off and get powder teathers, then your steeze will be multiplyied by 1billion and your brakes cant get broked

this happened to me last year at keystone coming up short on a 7. it took off down the hill and shot like 15 feet off the deck on the quarter pipe. for some reason the shop i went to replaced it for free cuz they had extras for me

its going to be worse with jesters, or atleast just as bad, that used to happen to me with my old p series alot, then I got FKS 2 years ago and had those on every ski, only ripped one brake arm off in 2 years. Last year i got jesters and damn, if you land the slightest bit on your toes with your din at a resonable setting, your heels are coming out, i got 2 new sets of brakes last year, they are poop, you have to turn your dins up alot, ride a day or too pretty hard at what you normally have your din at and see if you release as much as i did, then bump it up two...i never thought i would need a din of 15....

Rossi/ look are some of the best dude. Your problem sounds like your DIN is to low. If your landing switch the normal DIN isnt high enough. go up like 2 and you shouldnt pre eject. Also what rossi binding do you have?

I have last seasons Rossi Scratch 120s. I dont think it has anything to do with my DIN because i raised it throughout the season. At the end i think i was over 10 in the toe and heel. Im only 150lbs. Rossi bindings are shotty.

that happens to me a lot, better with fks though, the brakes are fucking bulletproof, only problem is sometimes the brake arm pops out of the metal casing but if you take them apart it's easy to put back in, you have to pull the binding off though, kinda ghey but doesn't happen that much

I've never ever had a good rossi product.  Expect great things from the Markers though.  I think Marker makes the best bindings out there.

you can think all you want, but you're thoughts are very incorrect. look/rossi bindings are probably the best bindings out there, when fks were still in production they were the best, hands down, then new px series are still a very solid binding. markers are crap and im kind of upset i bought them, they pre release a lot, how many screws hold in the toe piece? 2? yeah, waiting for that to rip out, albeit they do ride well when your skis stay on your feet, but thats only 50% of the time

Yeah, after putting a couple together and mounting them, they seem so flimsy, especially the griffon.  Any binding that mounts to a plastic heel track cant be that durable.

happened to my z12s twice after i had them for a month, the second time it fucked up the metal heel track under the the heelpiece, so the brakes didn't screw in right. it took salomon 6 months to send in a new heeltrack too. gay.

now i've got old ass power 140 bindings too, so if i break those i won't be able to find a new brake.

sorry brodie, but the jesters/griffon have 4 screws that attach the toe (good luck rippin that out)...you just don't see the first two, because the toe piece is actually 2 pieces (that black piece in front is what the rest of the binding slides into then you screw the last two screws you can see on the toe piece...sorry to rant but had to clear up your assumption.

i had x14s and the brakes never broke but they constantly were bending, which was a pain in the ass but beats needing new brakes

he means LOOK PX 14s wich are the exact same as rossis its the same comany product under a diferent name..
anyway i broke 4 brakes last year i mean i loved the rossi scratch bindings but the brakes just sucked.. so i went and bout the salomon sth 12!
love em there lighter then rossi and have yet to break any breaks!!!

and in regards to you saying that this was a "rossi/look" binding thread means i was talking about one of those is just dumb, i was offering an alternative to the rossi or look bindings, great binding but brakes bend easy(X14).

i just warrantied my X14 and got the X17 since i broke them 2 times, great binding but im too heavy for them


dont try to correct me please, i usually mean what i say and u will just confuse others by saying some random bull that has nothing to do with my post. before you try to correct someone try to have an expansive knowledge of the area in which you are correcting them

to people saying fks brakes are better--really? i shattered like 4 pairs last year, of brakes that is, just landing switch. the brake would totoally reverse its direction so it would point to the tip of the ski, thus ending my day. pretty shitty. i switched back to the old p series this year so we'll see how that goes

my guess is you didnt have enough forward pressure so when you landed with your weight on your tips your heel would move up a little in the binding, resulting in your brakes going down just far enough to catch the snow. Im not positive, but im pretty sure FKS brakes are steel vs. normal brakes that are aluminum but thats just what i was told by a friend

well im almost 100% sure i had enough forward pressure, for me its more about the brake housing. on fks its integrated meaning its annoying and difficult to replace brakes...whereas p12's you just slide the heelpiece off the track, take the brake off and put a new one on.

my problem with rossignol brakes is when i broke them off it tore out the connectors to the brake so they could not be fixed

seriously...the old 4frnt bindings were the shit for not having brake problems. the same thing that happened too all of you happened to me numerous times with pivots and i got sick of it. i read that 4frnt's brake system used 2 higher tension springs in their brake systems instead of 1 low tension spring that every other binding used and i thought hey why not? so i bought them and just as a i read, i never had a problem with my brakes going down! not once did my brakes go down on a switch landing or pop out of my heel's when landing switch. i can't say anything if its gonna be the same with the new 4frnts but all i know is the old ones were the shit, super solid too. i plan on mounting my old ones on my new skis after putting 160 days on them alread after 2 seasons, and bought another pair for my arg's. get em.
