So someone wants to use some of my footage for a documentry

so someone messeged my youtube account asking to use some old cliff jumping footage of mine in a documentry. im just wondering if i should ask for some money for it? heres the messege he sent me.

Hi,

My name is Eddie Stafford and I work as a producer for a production company called Double Act (www.doubleact.tv). Currently I’m making a documentary film about Tombstoning (what the Brits call cliff jumping) for the UK network Channel 4. Within the film I would like to use some clips people have posted of themselves tombstoning/ jumping from Youtube. One of the clips I’d like to license is “110ft Cliff Jump” – I must stress the footage will be treated in such a way that you will not be able to recognise anyone in the video. I would be grateful if you could let me know who holds the license to this footage and whether you would mind me using it in the documentary. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.

also im just wondering if this is just some sort of scam or something...even though i dont see how it could be..

but anyway im thinking of asking for something in return for the rights to it. how much do you think i should ask for?

what kind of profit does this guy expect to make from the vid? if its gonna be a relatively big film then ask for some money and a free copy for sure, even if it isnt you might aswell get a vid of yours in there just to say its yours. i really dont see how he could scam you unless you're giving away personal info or some shit

well the site looks pretty legit to me. and he said something about channel 4 so im guessing hes selling it to the tv station or working for them so he must be making something decent out of it.

how much do you think i should ask for haha?
thats mainly what im asking

ask to get sponsored for tombstoning... if that doesnt work take 20 bills and be stoked on it

hey, im british. on our public tv, i.e. no cable or sky, and no freeview(which is like a government provided free cable, with about 60 channels, but u have to buy a set up box for it), we have 5 basic channels. unsurprisingly channel 4 is one of them. so its pretty big, should have a fairly good budget, however i wouldn't know how they are with paying out for youtube clips, you run the risk of them just searching for another clip and you wont get to be on tv haha. and i for one would be quite stoked to see a fellow ns member on british tv!haha

yeah haha well i was gonna tell him i have higher res videos i could send and to make me an offer for the rights to it.

but i just realized our new renter across the street is a documentry filmmaker so il go ask her what she thinks a good amount might be haha

if you ask for money do it carefully. you dont want him to get scared off and go ask anouther youtuber. id say the fact hes trying to get vids from the net rather than filming it himself shows hes not keen on spending. idk

Have them sign a contract that in no way will the documentry make profit,

or offer it as stock footage as a price you think is fair and equal to what the industry standard would be for the quality/length he wants to use.

I've seen 30 second clips of the sky cost $400 usd +. So search around, maybe see if you can find a videographer forum and ask what they think the value should be.
