ARAPAHOE BASIN - Unless the Loveland Ski Area has a surprise opening planned it looks like Arapahoe Basin will be the first ski resort to open for the 2008-2009 ski season.
Arapahoe Basin, affectionately known as A-Basin, announced late Monday afternoon that they will open for the season on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. A-Basin looks like it will be the first resort in the nation to open.
A-Basin and Loveland Ski Area compete annually to see which ski area will open first in the country for the ski season. A-Basin has taken that honor the last two years running. If Loveland can’t get open by Wednesday it looks like the Basin will take the title for the third year in a row.
The ski area has been making snow for over a week, but A-Basin spokesperson Leigh Hierholzer says two days of 20-degree weather helped snowmakers keep their snow guns running all day and night.
“Our snowmakers have really cranked out the snow in the last couple of days and really turned it around so we have a lot snow on the ground,” said Hierholzer.
The ski area says they will have enough snow to cover the High Noon run with about 18 inches of snow from mid-mountain to the base area. High Noon is an intermediate run, which means beginner skiers are out of luck as no easy runs will be available.
Snowmakers have been working hard, but they’re not alone. With only two days notice before skiers and snowboarders descend the mountain, the ski area is working hard to get everything ready.
“Everything from cleaning the carpets to getting all the food out, hiring all the employees and grooming snow and we’ll be ready to go,” said Hierholzer.
Tickets will be $49 for adults and $25 for the kids. For information on lift tickets, A-Basin Bonus Passes and the opening of Montezuma Bowl, visit http://www.arapahoebasin.com.
