Skinning on rockered and reverse sidecut skis

Who here has skinned on a ski that is either rockered (reverse camber), or has reverse side cut (k2 pontoon, ARG) or both?  does it work ok? I'm thinking with reverse camber because the tips and tail don't touch the snow it might make skinning difficult.

I used to ski alot on Spatulas. Reverse, reverse, and heavy as hell. Not a big deal in pow, but in windblown and hard areas it kinds sucks.

he was asking about skinning not skiing. im assuming you all read it wrong. one of my friends last year had helbents last winter when we were skinning up grizzly gulch and had a really hard time getting up because the only part of the ski on the ground was right under foot and the skins didnt have enough surface area touching the snow to give him tracting. he ended up taking his skis off and hiking up.

buy some snow shoes

it works fine for sidecountry and casual tours but if you're gonna be traversing sketchy shit i would not recommend it, we've done tours where if you slip you're dead, and reverse sidecut skis do not hold on that, there's only one edge contact point instead of the 2 you need to hold in the snow. so on sketchy windblown icy traverses, they could really fuck you up, but everywhere else it's okay. my suggestion is to put some dukes on if you're curious so you can ski then inbounds and do some sidecountry and have a good touring ski for everything else. also you don't really want to lug a pair of spats or arg's up a hill

Agreed with the fact that sketchy shit + reverse sidecut = no go. Rockered stuff also isn't great there. You DO NOT want to tour on Hellbents or EP Pros because there is just too much rocker. For slackcountry and shorter tours you could definitely get away with the skis with minimal rocker. It's not great, but not bad. Obviously the wider you go the heavier the ski is usually, so take that into consideration.

^Comparing lugging a pair of spats up a hill to ARG's is wrong. Spats are like 15.5lbs, and the ARGs come in a hair under 10lbs. NOTHING alike.

What do you guys think about touring on this year's JJ's? I'm a bit curious because I think I'll be getting into it this season and it will probably have an effect on which skis I choose to purchase.

theres a lot of threads about this on tgr. And most people seem to think they are fine as long as its not super hard and steep.

thats actually exactly why i asked, the JJ's, this years or last are sick, but i didn't know if theyd be cool for skinning.  so to clarify, in powder, reverse sidecut/camber would be fine to skin on, but on icy/hard stuff, not so great?

i talked to my armada rep, because i wanted to know if this years were good for skinning.  he went and did a ton of research on everyone who has them and came back and said the overwhelming consensus is that they are good for skinning.  not perfect, but pretty damn good.  I'm going to get some with dukes for my back country shit this year,
