I'm a second-year history & politics student... after this year I've got one year left till I get my bachelors. Since midway last year I've been thinking of dropping out. I can get the grades fine... it's just I can't be fucked with 2 more years of this. I just want to go fucking ski...

I ski a meagre 7-15 days a season... I need more snow and everythin else is depressing.


Ya.. ya.. I know.. degree will help me later on. But why do something you're not passionate about? It seems to be an ever-growin waste of time and money to me...

That's allowed... you only live once dude, Im sure some time in the mountains will get your head on straight, im a 23 year old freshman that just started after a ski "break " of 5 years and i allready want to go back to the mountains.... i think im going to spend 1 winter away , this winter" then go back. there building a school ion truckee so im going to go back.

hahha i was pretty much in the same position as you last year... 3rd year psych major... 1 year left... but i was burnt out as fuck and since i knew i still had grad school to attend i decided to take some time off. this year i will be moving into salt lake from philly and working as a ski instructor at alta.. just livin the dream

I'm one year of fulltime away from a BA and last year I lived in Tahoe for a break, now I'm in sac as a rep and saving up to buy property in tahoe.....  only downfall, if I can't be a rep anymore then I have no fall back with the  "piece of paper".    STFU and ski   heehee

Ya.. like realistically the only reason I'm still in the UK studying this shit is because my parents have invested so much in my education. If they hadn't I would be on the next plane to Canada...

Sadly I can't... In the u.k. you have two semesters. September - December and January - June.

So I can't really take either semester off for skiing... well I guess the january - june one...

Thats about what I did.  I had finished 3 years of a 5 year degree, got sick of the whole school thing and said fuck it.  I moved out to Salt Lake for 9 months or so, and had the best time of my life.  It wasn't that hard to go back to school as long as you keep that plan in the back of your mind.  I would absolutely recommend taking a year off and getting your head on straight.  You will be glad you did.

Cheers for the comments and tips... I have a lease on a house till end of this year.. So I am somewhat tied down here till then... I think I may take a year off after this year and see what I actually want to do before I finish my final year....

Any similar stories like the one above are appreciated btw..

either way. you're gonna make the decision thats right for you, theres no plan when it comes to life. im all for the 'fuck it and go ski' approach , but think about how much better you will feel once you get that degree and you take that time off, as opposed to taking the time off now, forgetting alot of your shit and then realizing that you still have to go back to school again. and i mean its not like you arent skiing at all, you arent going to forget how to. but like i said either way whaever feels right to you is the way to go. good luck with your decision.

here's my story

went to junior college for two years full time even though i wanted to take a year off right after high school.  I played baseball, had a part time job at a ski shop and also doing yard maintenance and also went to school full time.  completely overloaded myself.  had to stop baseball due to injury then I was going to college part time, taking 3 classes and working more.  throughout that time, I went from wanting to be a teacher, to business major, then teacher, then back to business.  then I took a semester off and just worked at the ski shop.  I knew that right then and there I wanted to work for myself, so I figured I'd go back to school and work towards opening my own shop one day.  I went to a University, ended up hating the whole program at this certain private univesity.  So I took another semester off and partied my ass off while working at the ski shop.  Then the ski shop went out of business, I gave the university one more effort only to realize that "yeah this is why i took time off cuz I hate this school and want to do nothing more than ride."  there are two mountains in plain sight of this certain university.  One is ten thousand feet, the other is 14 thousand feet, both have snow year around.  During this last sememster, I was working at a big box store and I missed riding all the time and missed all the hookups of working at a core shop, so i said fuck all this, made a quick and firm decision to move to tahoe to ski bum and figured that if I worked my ass off, met some people along the way and rode as much as humanly possible, that shit would all work out...and it did, so far.  You just have to have the right attitude and always focus on the positive, NO MATTER WHAT, and most of the time, you'll be just fine.  If you're religious, do what works for you.

Honestly bro, I'm started to believe all the nuts claiming the world is over in 2012. It's 2008 and our economy is absolutly fucked. If the economy is fucked, the country is fucked.  Do what you like, you only live once.
I used to be the biggest skeptic about the 2012 idea, now I'm right along with it. My dad works all wallstreet, he came home the other night saying "WE'RE ALL FUCKED"  then I knew.

you dont have to "apply" for a career. you apply for a J O B.  you don't need a BA to start a career.  the majority of people that get BA's don't use them for the major that they got them for, its more so just a statement on paper that you accomplished something. If you have passion and knowledge, that's pretty much all you need.

I took a year off part way through my degree,. Best thing I've ever done, I came back 1.5 years later and was actually motivated to study.


I'd still rather be skiing than studying but I'm happy at school and with my life now.

I can't stress this enough, do what YOU want with your life and not what others think is best.

Or just have it both ways?

I'm transferring into U of Oregon and I'll be ahead of the game there because I took a ton of classes at my JC. This winter term I'll be taking an extremely light course load (maybe 2 classes) and ski as much as possible. Then I'll probably take some summer courses, that way I can take the next winter term off completely. That's no school from December to March, what more can I ask for? I'm not being a bum, and I'm not turning back on my desire to ski as much as possible.

Maybe its just me, but there is no way in hell I can be a ski instructor. If my skis are on snow, my patience is nil.

Thanks for the replies... I think I'm goin to spend this summer in NZ and then spend the winter either in Canada but probably Europe as it's more cost-friendly and then get back to finishing my degree the year after.

Yea you do. Even if it's at the bottom you still apply for it. And any good career, barring some sort of family connection prevent you from getting a good career without at least a BA (I am not talking about starting your own business or sales, they require nothing and can be quite lucrative).


The piece of paper, even if the job isn't based on your major, shows the company that you did accomplish something and lets them weed out those without.

I thought that would be the dread and I tried that last year. And I kind of felt it was a waste of time. If you're putting your time into skiing or school its better to do it full out rather than semi good.

you and me both my brotha.  sure, there's some stress with tests and everything, but if you can't handle the stress from classes then you probably weren't meant to do much of anything in life anyways.

i'd say stick it out....have your education past you, then take some time off and move to canada or europe for a year or two (what i may do).  you'll have the degree and plenty of jobs to find.  it's easy to go back to the mountains; it's a hell of a lot harder to go back to the classroom.  just my 2 cents.

Thats the reason ive got 2 classes at my highschool for my senior year and 5 online classes
plus a job as terrain park crew to get the maximum jibbing into my daily schedule. I straight up dropped out last year to go ski almost everyday.... haha now i dont get to graduate with my class but honestly i dont give a fuck cus ill be skiing when everyone else is in school
