Roman Emperors and later on kings were the only ones allowed to wear it. It was the most expensive colour to make, because the dye came from crushing these snails that were only found on this one island. It took like 3000 snails to make I think an ounce of purple dye. I think it only came to the Roman Empire and western Europe through trade with Asia, and it was rediculously expensive.
