Has anyone done an RV ski trips

Hello NS, has anybody here had experience with RVs and ski areas. Recently I was looking at renting a house in the summit county area for a few months this season with friends. Then, all the sudden, we had a new, brilliant idea, buy a used RV. Our plan is to buy it over our christmas break, then begin the drive from the Reno back to school in Boulder around new years, stopping off in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming for a little skiing before returning to school where the RV would be used every weekend. Has anyone here had experience parking RV over night at ski areas? I looked online at a couple we would be going to and they said nothing about motorhome/overnight parking areas.

not really, splitting the RV with 3 other kids, beds for 6 then enough room to sleep a couple more,.if we fill it up every weekend, which is not hard to do at all, then get gas money from everyone who doesnt own the RV we should have enough to not spend to much on gas out of our own pockets, either way it beats A)renting a house for the season, B) renting a hotel for a couple weekends, and C)doing day trips both days of the weekend

gas would still be a shitload...your looking at close to 4.50 a gallon. Then you get maybe 8miles a gallon, which would be pushing it. Some friends i knew had one and it only got 6miles a gallon. Talk about one expensive trip back to boulder.

one of the diesels we were looking at was 12-14 on the highway, albeit diesel is more expensive it does leave the option for a conversion to veggie oil, worst comes to worse if the trip from reno back to boulder is to expensive we would just purchase it here. this is plan is still in the building process it has a lot of kinks to work out

Sounds like a sick idea. My newest idea is a sailboat ski trip. I know it sounds crazy but think. 40ish foot boat set sail in cali then Argentina then NZ could do some epic shit. and im sure make a ski video.

You can park in Last Chance lot at A-Basin as long as you want for free (super fun bonfire parties up there in the spring too).

You can also park at the Wal-Mart in Frisco with zero hassle.

i dont even want to know what an RV from the 80s is gunna smell like, but its nothing a couple hot box sessions cant fix, and some of those vanilla scented air frasheners

Most all RVs have furnaces in them.

I recommend you get a carbon monoxide alarm though. Nothing ruins a day of skiing like dying in your sleep cause the furnace had a problem.

RV's are really expensive aren't they? And if they are cheap they are going to be incredibly unreliable. You might be better off buying a white E-250 or 350 Van from a company that has fleets of those vehicles and then sells them on the cheap. Chris Tatsuno style.

RV's are just ridiculous with repairs, breakdown etc. I could see it either being the sickest shit ever, or the absolute shittiest situation ever if you bought something that was unreliable.

Some places don't let you park over night in the parking lots but a lot of times you can find a King Soopers or a Safeway and park there. If your lucky enough to find a public camping area (usually in National Forests) then you can pull in there for the night. I've done it at the campground when you get off of Berthoud Pass on the right hand side. I've slept there for a few nights in my car during Christmas Break so I didn't have to drive home and back to go ski.

A pickup with a cabover camper shell would be the most reliable but not the easiest thing to find, if you do decide to go with a motorhome make sure it's a diesel. The older gas ones get single digit gas mileage and the engines wear out super quick because of the increased load. With a diesel you have the veg oil conversion which nowdays is super affordable and reliable. Just make sure if you are going to be using it in cold temps that the glow plugs are in good shape or it will never start. Last time I went on an RV ski trip was to Jackson and Big Sky we stayed right in the lot every night with no problems except when one of the dudes on the trip accidently released a load of that blue sewage shit into Big Sky's parking lot. We got some pretty dirty looks for that one and got the fuck out of town. As long as you avoid doing that you should be able to find spots to park at all of the stops you make especially if you don't get a gigantic one.

Don't listen to all these guys. I was in the market for an RV all summer. There are tons of well maintained one-owner RVs out there.

The reason people sell them is because of kids/mortgage/cc bills/work etc.

Most people only use theirs for 2 weeks in the summer cause they are working the rest of the year.

That the beauty of being a young college kid. Little to worry about but skiing, drinking, and poon.

Go for it. Hopefully someone in your crew is mechanically inclined so when you go to look at RVs you can see if its in good shape or not.

yeah, i have a couple friends with old RVs and they all are running beautifully. Luckily 2 kids Im buying the RV with have a decent knowledge of engines and that jazz....cause i sure dont, changing oil and spark plugs is about the most I can do. We are looking pretty hard for a diesel, for many reasons, towing being the most important, gotta move that 4 place trailer full of sleds, well one sled at the moment i will be to broke after this purchase, but finding an old class A motorhome with a diesel is pretty hard

All wal-marts have a 24 hour safe zone, where your allowed to park in their lot, and you can stay for 24 hours at a time

not only can you park there, but in cali you can get incedibly cheap booze too. And if you come through idaho you can park pretty much wherever the fuck you want, knowone cares that shit happens left and right
