Skiers becoming straight up rasta. We may think now, who started this whole darn gangster guerilla steeze thing? Why that would be Tanner Hall of course. It was T hall that shifted skiing from hard rock and backflips to misties and some hip hop. Tanny is obviously now shifting towards Reggae and rasta, and it seems some other pros who may or may not have hung out with Cali P are following the movement. Using the hip hop historical parralel, I can completely see skiing becoming a rasta movement, with jamaiican color ski suits, no poles and much more jah. The weed stays the same. And still haters will call us posers for acting like black people. But we will still be the most damn steeziest fellas on the slopes!

So with that, escuse me while I light my spliff, HAAAAH HAAAAAH HAAAAAH HAAAAH.


(Im actually down with skiing becoming rasta, that would be radsauce. Haha)

its ridic how us on the street can hear from the top levels of our sport. you go on a NFL forum and you dont see Tom Brady posting in there about his personal life....

not trying to disrespect tanner, but the rastafarian version of the second coming of christ (he was an emperor of ethiopia), well, he kinda, um, died. and yeah, that wasn't supposed to happen. just so you know, not trying to start beef, just letting you know why a lot of people stopped following rasta. otherwise, everything about rasta is GREAT.
and i can't wait for the new site! keep it real.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on rastafarianism making the most sense...it actually doesnt make a lot of sense at all.

but it is peaceful and positive for much of it, which is great and if it's your calling, I'm not going to be one to stop ya tanner. nor anyone, it's your own free path to choose.

Well thats sick dude I hope you know Im not hating on you or anything only identifying that skiing often follows the trends that you set. I put the thread in a joking manner but I hope you didn't take it as in insult to Rastafarianism itself, as I was considering the style more than the religion.


Yeah the thread wasnt about skiing facts, just about trends! Lets all giggle everyone!

not going to lie... it's rediculous how much respect tanner has for all of us.  so much that he would go and completely explain himself to all of us. 

man is legit.  I think all the tanner haters outside of the ns community have no idea who they are dealing with.  tanner has no need to be rad with us and he still does.

well rastafarianism has to do with the fact that the ethiopian king (who was a dick) HIM was god reincarnate...
and marcus garvey, who was a black separatist, and regarded as sort of a prophet, pretty much set forth the notion that blacks were better than whites. many rastafarians will deny that it's a part of the religion, but its a part of the culture...
just doesn't make sense. many other religions don't make sense either but the fact that it's so modern and it has somewhat medieval beliefs is confusing. on the other hand, like I said, it's very peaceful for the most part and has many spiritual philosophies that many should follow.

reggae has been part of skiing since our parents wore one pieces its here to stay.. it seems skiing and smokin weed go hand in hand which manythen think reggae comes with it yo RASPECT

just read that and i will agree with you on most parts nothing makes me feel better than some funky reggae but reggae is not all positive some of the ugliest and nastyest songs i have ever heard have been those of sizzla exclaiming how we should go around and kill "dem batty bwoys" nothin gets me more bummed on the reggae and rasta movement then the contradiction between one love and killin n the turf kingston streets but i guess that all depends on who you listen to

haha calling it "rastafarianISM" is insulting.  Not really important but as peter tosh said
"we're sick and tired of you're isms, scisms"

Although I don't really agree that the religion makes much sense as far as the selassie stuff goes (I have yet to find a single religion in the world that makes sense) I definately agree that the message is great and it's the kind of message that needs to be spread.

oh and I agree with the one guy (forget username but his emblem was a picture of sellasi I) that it really bugs me hearing reggae songs about how we should kill all the pagans and bad men.  Sizzla has lots of songs that I love but I can't listen to them anymore cause I've heard so much garbage from him aswell.  I can't take him seriously anymore.  His song "Ultimate Hustler" puts it about right.  Turbulence too has some songs like that.


That has nothing to do with the rasta message, but lots of kids listening to the music may get the impression that it does.  It's awesome to see Tanner come in here and post about this because it really is a serious issue.


My one hope is that rasta doesn't become a trend were kids know nothing about it, that they just wear the colors and smoke weed, the message has to get through

i'd rather this not become a race thing, but rastas have plenty of reason to hate white people, historically speaking. but in reality, only a small fraction of fundamentalist rastas feel that way, and even fewer act on it. most are a pretty enlightened bunch.

my point is that very few religions "make sense" when you look at fundamentalist sects. its dangerous to think of any religion in that way. look at some crazy sects of christianity, islam, etc.. its a fucking mess! plenty of medieval belief in a modern world.



the point of modern rastafari is having a positive spirituality and an uplifting mentality to look at the world through to overcome your challenges. you dont have to hate white people(or anybody) or read marcus garvey books and lectures to understand that.

I think it depends on what kind of reggae you listen to. I know bob marley was postive, but these new reggae artists like sizzla and warrior king are good for the most part but ive heard alot of homophobic remarks like they say everyone is equal but we should burn down all the gay. Im not gay but thats fucked up and contradictory.

Tanner is so dead on here. I like hip hop, and a lot of hip hop songs( especially older stuff from the early 90's) have some really good, positive lyrics. But beyond that, so much of contemporary hip hop is so focused on violence and gangsterism that it's just not uplifting to listen to. Additionally, I have a hard time relating to really gangster shit. Now I'm not saying I don't enjoy myself a gangster ass tune, but its not the music I want to fill my life with.

Reggae on the other hand, particularly roots era reggae and roots inspired contemporary reggae is music that I want to live my life by. That music is filled with positive vibes of hope, peace, and religion, which much better suits my non gangster lifestyle. Reggae lyrics inspire me to be a better person everyday, and at this point in my life, it's kinda the only thing I take any religious value out of. That being said, reggae is really important to me, and since last spring/winter, I've really started to live reggae, not just listen to it.

To be honest, I'm not liking some of the ski culture these days. Lots of people I like on this website, lots.

But having some one set the trends for a year, and it impacts an entire community? Kinda sad.

I have nothing against rasta or gangster, it's your style, so im not going to care. For the others looking and asking what to wear, go and find whats you. I like it when I can just go out and turn heads, just find something that no one would want, wear it in public. I'm not sure if I could take this to the ski hill though, I'm not up for modifying my new gear.

So if ski culture goes towards Rasta, oh well, just another thing to avoid.
