Anyone else get this camera? I just preordered mine and I'm really excited to put it to the test and see what it can do. It's been getting great reviews, and is the first SLR to shoot HD video (720pi). This opens up a whole new can of worms and I can't wait to see what it can do. Here's a sample video:





And compared to a HVX...

I'm pretty stoked on the D90 and the 5D II's video modes, I think it's gonna shake up the industry a little bit.

Not a bad camera at all!

I'm just bummed I bought a Canon 1D MkII N RIGHT before the 5D II came out, I really really would have liked to play around with this HD video stuff, let us know how it goes!

i agree with you for sure. combining HD video and incredible photo caabilities into a compact camera was a risky move, but i feel like it will pay off

the whole DSLR/Video camera is going in the right direction, but the D90 has a ton of workarounds you have to use in order to lock exposure, control gain, shutter speed, etc.  Not quite there yet.  But if you're looking for a good DSLR and want to mess around with shooting hd video, this camera is great.

5D MkII IQ and video mode looks amazing. Having such a flexible DOF looks like a lot of fun for filming. I'm definitely looking forward to trying one of these puppies out.

I'm still wishing there was a Canon equivalent to the D300 in that price range. I'd go 5D MkII, but it just isn't a sport's camera. And I don't have the cash to shell out for a 1D III...unless I go Mk II. Ah, decisions.

How do you like the 1D MkII? I shoot a 20D and I'm feeling the need to upgrade for focusing capabilities, FPS and resolution. I've had the opportunity this last week to shoot with the D300 and loved it. However, I've never shot with a Canon 1D series so I have nothing to compare with. The only lenses I own are a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and 70-200 f/4L, so it's not like I have a huge investment in glass....

It's simply the best tool for the job, bar none. It's kind of like buying a Mac. Everything just works.

Although it's outdated now, I think the II N is the first upgrade-proof DSLR that hit the market. The updates over the MK II are somewhat subtle, but really are huge when you come down to using the camera all the time....


I have a 30D that's now become my backup, it puts out good images, but it's kind of a bitch to use in certain situations, like you said.




that 70-200 f/4 is a sick lens, I've got the 2.8 version, they're seriously some of the best lenses made for 35mm format cameras.



Basically, if you're making money shooting, 1 series cameras are a good idea. If not, there's nothing wrong with the 5D/30D series cameras, and you'll save a bit of money. (The new 5D II build quality is on par with the 1 series now, which is more than I can say for the original)




I go to school for photography though, and my school-job is renting out all the new cameras from the photo cage, so I can probably talk enough shop about cameras to write a 10 page paper.........

i have never used a 1d so I couldn't truthfully compare, but i do have a d300 with the mb-d10 battery pack and it is incredible. i got it in a kit with nikon's 18-200mm VR lens. its such a great lens for a single lens quiver. So if your thinking of upgrading and aren't against switching companies id say get a d300

and with the d90 and 5d II I think it's a great idea, but i'm a little skeptical. I dont know  they could nail it first try, but I think it could have some glitches. I also feel that the d90 is going to be way more successful, because it costs less. I think that people who would be spending 2700 on a body aren't going to want video simply because it's just one more thing that could go wrong and they just won't need it. I think canon should put video into the 30d or 40d. I think putting video in a lower end model would be more successful than in one of their high end models

The video is going to take a lot of skill focusing for it to work out. DOF will be pretty damn shallow. Unless they've been really smart and got the AF to work while the mirror is up. And even then will it keep up?

D700 in less than 2 weeks now. Stoked.

the D700 is a SICK camera. Guts of the D3, but in a smaller package, hell yeah!

That's my one problem with the 1D/D3 line of top level cameras is that they're just too big for some things..... if you're shooting street it's pretty hard to be discreet with one of those around your neck.... 's why I have a Powershot G9 for carrying around everywhere........

For sure. Nikon is giving a product demo at my college in a few weeks so I'll scope them out then. I'll probably usethe D700 with the grip almost all the time which actually makes it bigger than the D3 but it'll be nice to have the option of the small body with a 50mm to go descreet. Only a few hundred more for the D3 though, but the only feature that'll offer me is better build quality. When I'm ready for a D3 the D700 will make a kickass backup body.

I'm totally getting it! Two of my firends have d80s and I wanted to buy one too but I thaught that it was alittle slow with it's 3 pic per sec, d90 has 4.5. it seems like a dope camera, too bad it's gonna take a long while until I can afford it =(

I was gonna say just get the D3 if it's only a couple hundred bucks, but it's about $2,000 more haha.


I really can't use Nikon because I'm so used to shooting Canons and their button layouts, but the D700 would probably be my camera of choice if I was a Nikonian.

D700: $3000
MB-D10 (grip): $240
EN-EL3e batter for grip: $40

Total: $3280

Vs. D3 = $5000

Hmm, yeah not as close as I thought.

Just watching the footage of that hvx makes me think they made it look worse or had no idea what they were doing(which doesnt seem possible). I have seen better colors from horner on his hv30 than what they got with their hvx. Seems like a bias movie to me. The depth of field was ill on the nikon, but really not that needed in the skiing industry. Over, it looks amazing, but the video still isn't comparable to and hvx. Put a 35mm adapter on an hvx and it would blow away the d90.

Oh yeah, reading the info on the video it seems like the people didn't have much experience with either (D90 or HVX) but created the video to show some of the pros and cons of both.

I think you are overlooking the fact that it is a solid camera as is, and only has an added bonus of HD video. It's good for someone who wants to shoot photos, but also have the option of filming once in a while. It's also a lot cheaper than a HVX and 35mm adapter, and takes up a lot less room.

I started fooling around with mine yesterday and it has a pretty steep learning curve, but I'm excited to see what it can do once winter rolls along.

Seriously, no-one is going to buy a D90 to use primarily as a video camera. Comparing it to an HVX is ridiculous.

A LOT of pros are using 5D and D300s now (and now 700's). The main reason to go above that is build quality.

i had suspicions this was going to happen, but didn't hesitate to buy a d80 just 2 months before the  d90 came out. why? because it's my first camera, and i wanted good quality, however, the real investment is glass.  obviously bodies are going to be changing, nikon's cranked out 5 just this year, but the same lenses are going to be used for the foreseeable future...but with all these new advancements who knows what will be next?

Ive shot canon for the past 3 years but have recently started with nikon and surprisignly its not that bad, i mean you just got to get used to it, but after a month its pretty much natural. Everything is basically just exactly the opposite, you screw on the lens teh opp way, and so on.

I am seriously considering the d700 because its the only full frame that get 5+ fps and not $5000+
