Why Don't We All Do What We Want to Do?

Is there a reason we don't do what we want to do when we want to? I have always wanted to go on an epic roadtrip adventure with my friends but just never felt it was feasible or that they were interested... Why haven't I done it yet? There is a thread over on TGR (yes I know that is blasphemy here but you should all good check it out) called Best Summer Ever, or something similar. The subject of the thread seemingly has the best summer ever. Obviously each of us has different ideas about what the best summer ever would entail but still his was pretty amazing and puts the vast majority of our summers to shame no matter your criteria. Why don't we do these things that we have always wanted to do? Maybe I am alone in that I have been too focused on progression to actually accomplish some of the things I have been yearning for but I really don't think so. This is going to be way over the heads of most NS members. But I'm talking to those who are in college and above. Is there any reason why I haven't done these things I want to do? What is going on here? Are there things you have always wanted to do but just never got around to? That last part applies to anyone. What have you wished you would have done but never did? Maybe you still have the chance but maybe it was a one time thing.
I guess cliffnotes for everyone who is too lazy is: Why didn't you do something you really wish you would have? And, Why havent you yet done things you wish you still could?
(Heliskiing doesn't count, I'm talking like great experiences with your greatest friends.) Things you will remember till you die and tell your children and grandchildren about. Life experiences that change you in some way.

this is not meant to offend anybody or yourself. from my point of perspective (ive graduated college already) is you have to just do it and go for it. planing is a good idea but not a must. planning only makes the process longer.
money is also an issue for alot of reasons. i have had more fun winging my experiences than with a plan.
it is interesting though, like when we were young we were told that you could do anything or be anything when you grow up. at some point you reach that point and realize you might be older than you thought or that the world turned out differently than what was forced down us in school.
the great thing is you can be what you want and you can do what you want.
so after all that, do what you want and do it without regret. the older you get the more responsibility and bills you have to pay so dont put it off for anything!
hope that helped

there are a lot fo things i would like to do that aren't accepted by modern society. that's pretty much the only thing holding me back from just packing up all my shit and touring around the world looking for a real adventure.

Yea. See I am totally down for all that. I just want to go for it. But all of my friends are scared. Everyone is so worried about college and getting a job that they don't want to live life carefree while they still can. I am currently in a position where I could do anything for a job and get away with it. But a lot of people are scared of that because they want to establish. Either way is valid, and I struggle between both. But I really just want to let loose and fly with the wind.

i have a few friends that just wing it and travel over the country, barly having a place to live.
it comes down to travel and have lots and lots of fun with little or no money, or being a drone and doing what everybody else does in this world, work.
take it from somebody that is done with college, you think your opportunities would get larger when you get older but they shrink. it can be a hard decision tho haha

The only thing holding you back is yourself. Not money, you can always make money. You can do anything you want or need to accomplish your goals. If you really want something make it happen, nothing is stopping you from making a lot of money. Nor is society holding you back, thats just you being afraid of being judged. Do what you want to, why should anything else matter?

One time a buddy of mine and I drove to colorado (from california) to go skiing for a week. I knew someone in keystone at employee housing, and we stayed with him for free, I also knew someone living in SLC at the time, so we stayed with him for a couple nights too. I think we both spent 300$ each for a week of skiing. It helped that we didnt have to pay for tickets. It was one of the coolest things ive ever done.
One time we were going up to shasta to go skiing, and said screw it, we will go to ashland (another 2 hours north), then decided to go to bachelor the next day (5 more hours), and that was rad.
Its all about spontaneity, and just deciding to do something. You usually have to have someone as crazy as you though.

just the nature of reading lets your imagination run wild....

I'm currently living in redmond, oregon as an exchange student, not going homw to norway for a year. When school is over in June, my 3 best friends are coming over to visit me, and we're going on a roadtrip somewhere. We don't know where, but we're gonna do it. I'm really looking forward to it. i've only been here for 3 weeks, but i miss them already.
I guess that's not quite what this thread was meant for, but i'm just throwing it out there.

did you "do it" ?
haha weird, you and i sound allot alike... right now the day im done with school i plan to pack my belongings into a bag, and "hit the road" literally go to the airport and close my eyes and point to a monitor and say "lets see where this will bring me"
right now the only thing holding me back is age (to a certain extent)
but yeah, same for me, non of my "close friends" share the need to explore like i do...

I could write a book on what I think haha. I'll try to shorten it up a bit, hmmm. This is in no way to be offensive to you by the way, I know some of it probably will be but its just what I think, and I'm not judging you at all, I don't judge anyone before I know them.
The way I see it, if you really want something, nothing should hold you back. Theres always some way to make money, and if your goals are more materialistic oriented (which is not a bad thing whatsoever, no one should judge peoples goals either) then you should be getting a good job that pays well. And having an internship for the summer is just a step towards your goal. If you want to be able to ski and travel I would suggest trying to get sponsored. I mean I realize that it is a huge commitment don't get me wrong, but if thats what you really want and what will make you happy you should go for it. If you put all your effort into it theres no way you can't live the life you want. Thats just the way I see it though. You gotta do whats right for you in the end, and the way I see thing may not be right for what you want. Doing what you really want, to me anyway, is the most important thing in the world. I see no reason to not be happy every single day of your life, nor do I see no reason to do anything you don't want to do.

i dont know how old you are but i read this and good pictures by the way.
i would imagine you are alittle younger than i am (im 22) and ive had the same thoughts as you, i think alot of outdoor, realistic people on this site have thought about it, letting loose and traveling the country/ world. thing is, our mind as humans, always stays young. so, as the body gets older your mind stays in the same state (for the most part) and after awhile you start regreting your decisions.
i have been thinking alot since i got out of school. it is weird not going back since i have been going my whole life. im at that turning point where its "work for the rest of my life" or go have fun for a couple of years. and you know what? its only myself keeping myself back. money is an issue but people can get by without it.
to think that i will be doing the same thing year in and year out is depressing, standing in the same area for 40 years. dont get me wrong, i love what i do, but the fact that day in day out is for a better lack of words, the same, is weird.
BTW this applies to everybody reading not just you haha

I packed a car with a long time friend suddenly turned girlfriend and we drove from Seattle to Haines Alaska last June. We had no plans, no itinerary, just a few road maps, camping supplies and a few hundred bucks of cash. Two and a half weeks, a thousand pictures, and one of the best trips ever, but wish it had skiing... Maybe try that this next spring when I head to Turkey to do the same thing.
To anyone on the verge, do it.

Its my motto to "do what you want to do in life"
I just graduated high school, and from what I can see so far im not going to college for this year, maybe next after that too. Moving to colorado, becoming a ski bum, something ive always wanted, and If im lucky a downhill biking bum. I want to start a business and always have, so im working on that. and as stupid as it sounds ive ALWAYS wanted to serve in the military, but my problem is this
ADHD, Bad foot, Asthma, horrible allergies, Hypoglycemia (passing out due to low blood sugar), a minor sleepwalking problem, many more and the big one: I got in a nasty car accident that ruined my back, its shot, gone, at the age of 17 I needed to rely on painkillers. Can't touch my toes, and if im lucky ill be able to sleep for 4 hours at a time. But ive always wanted to join the military so im working as hard as I can ever work myself to make my back in good enough shape to even think about talking to recruiters.
but thats that

You think it does, then you meet people for travel. Trust me, if you want something like this bad enough, money doesnt matter.

that would be AMAZING...
i am at the age (18) where something like this is fast becoming a reality..
my brother and i have been playing around with the idea of road tripping around in my mom's old mini van this winter, hit up CO, UT... and see where the road takes us.
haha throw 2 air matresses down in the back of the van, hit up a few people i know for floor space. and WERE set!
the only problem planning this around skiing is lift tickets are hella spendy.(at some places)
whats your plan for turkey?

Buy a plane ticket and rent a car over there for a month. We have a list of places we want to see, but we'll play it by ear when we get there.

Some people do what they want to do. I'm one of those people. I will tell you though, that unless you have a lot of money, you will probably hate life a lot.
Like right now, I'm completely broke, and have no job. I hate life cause I can't really do anything at the moment until I have a job. But I know 2 months from now, when I do have a job, I will be perfectly happy again.
I'm constantly told I make dumb decisions and I could have spent my money better ways, but I always recover, and I'm always happy I made the decisions that I did.
3 winters ago, I was already short on money from school but found airfare to switzerland for $200 at 12am. So I bought the airfare and went to Switzerland anyway. I could have spent that money 500 more reasonable ways, but hell, I went to Switzerland!
2 and a half years ago I was having severe car issues. I went and bought a brand new subaru. Was it the best idea? No. Was it the smart idea? No. But I loved that car, I still love that car and now it is almost paid off, I have driven it through some of the worst weather one could imagine, I have driven across the country 4 times, taken it on archaeology digs and been rear ended twice with almost no damage to the car. Could I have done this in a KIA?
So make your decisions based on what you want. You may regret them for a month or two after, but once things settle, you realize how amazing it really was.
Just dont let your decision be to rape and pillage or anything else that will land you in jail. Cause then you probably wont enjoy it any time after.
