not to mention unbelievably repetitive. i watched CLAIM, and its the exact same as The Hit List and every other ski movie theyv done, but with a new theme and one or two new tricks that werent in last years msp movie, but were in smaller productions like 2 or 3 years ago. talk about lethargic progression

I have to agree. It obviously has been working for them so you cant argue with it but how much longer will they be able to put out the same movie and still sell so many? I bought seven sunny days and if it wasnt for TJ Schiller and mark abma I dont think I would have liked it very much. With the way skiing is evolving and progressiing MSP is gonna start to fade if they keep doing the same thing.

dude, the only reason msp gets all that attention is because theyr fucking rich. in case u havent noticed, they also produce the massive mtb sieries new world disorder, which has like 8 or 9 installments. they can afford to shoot everything they want from a heli or a hovercraft or a sattelite with blu-ray hd 40mm panavision cameras. imagine if 4bi9 or Field had that kind of money? The only segments i have seriously been stoked on from msp were rory bushfield in the hit list, the wingsuit part from 7 sunny days, and kaj zackrisson in claim.
  also, media that gets recognized is usually not the quality, but the most profitable. all the grammy-award-winning shit has all been heard before, theres not a single artist there who isnt a millionaire by now. The oscars, a bit more integrous, but easily bought. The thng is, it seems like msp is making movies at super hi-quality that cater to the non-skier crowd, which is totally awesome for getting the sport noticed, dont get me wrong, like if a totally non- skier/ snowboarder saw vids of huge  0-spins off cliffs  and shifty bio 9s, it would be the same to them as any other trick. how would they know how technical those things are to do without style?
  so, all the indie companies, it seems, are making ski movies for skiers, while msp is making ski movies for  profit.

Dont call me dude...Rich??Not a single guy at MSP is in any way shape or form rich. I don't know where or how anyone ever came up with the pipe dream that these guys are rich. And as for producing NWD, so they associate produce those movies, meaning basically send a filmer on a couple shoots so they can make an HDTV show on MTB as well. Freeride Entertainment out of Nelson BC, is the company who makes the movies, but im sure they are raking in millions from freeride too..ha ha thats a good joke. Truth of the matter is that if you gave field and 4bi9 the same cameras MSP is still going to sell 10x more dvds because their movies appeal to a larger audience than the 25% max of you newschoolers that make up the industry. Dont get me wrong I think Field and 4bi9 make an awesome product and watching their movies stokes the hell out of all the ns.com crowd. But guess what all you kids on ns are still checking out the MSP movie as well as the 30 and 40 year old dudes who live by POWDER magazine and are sitting on the tramdocks at Squaw and the Bird at 7 am, while all of you are in bed waiting for PC to groom away the pow so you can go practice a K-fed on the new DFD rail in Kings Crown. MSP's movies appeal to a bigger audience than those smaller companies, hence the reason they have sponsors backing them to get those epic heli shots. Every sponsor throws down to make that happen and end result is a movie with great cinematography and a movie that has 10 year old to 40 year old skiers getting Stoked on the upcoming winter. None of those guys are anywhere close to rich so give up that fact kiddos.

Now my rant is over, and I am going to go watch Claim, Turbo, Slamina, Reasons, Under the Influence, Such is Life etc etc and get STOKED for this coming season. And enjoy all if them and not hate on them. You want Rich, go to hollywood and check out a Speilberg movie...

tha only true park statement i've ever heard was Simon Dumont in an interview for the north american open where he said somethin like "we woke up this morning an there was way to much snow. So we waited for this awesome resort to get out here an get rid of it all. there so awesome"

i understand that they were tryin to run a contest an all, but i thought a ton of freeskiers in one location would make dew with a dump of snow over the night, it coulda of been the north american powder park open '08

in the beginning of the New World Disorder series Matchstick was hugely invovled since their logo would come up on the opening credits but now i think it's more low key. if you check the credits, some of the stuff was shot by MSP principal video guys.

bottom line is that MSP gets a huge budget because they make quality films and win awards out ying yang. their films don't focus on the gangster thug 4bi9 kind of films and that appeals to the older demographic with deeper pockets. basically MSP is going to eventually be at Warren Miller type status.

Anyone who has this deluded vision of MSP needs a serious reality check. MSP obviously has more sponsorship backing, but where does that money go? Right back into production.

What does it cost to shoot an urban rail, terrain park features or a backcountry booter? A DV tape, gas money, maybe a couple hundred bucks for a light and maybe another couple hundred for a lightweight dolly setup, then a few more bucks for materials for a drop-in ramp. So anywhere from $15-$500 and you're getting quality shots.

What does it cost to shoot in AK, Norway, Europe, BC, Russia and sit around for two weeks multiple times a year with multiple crews because that's what it takes to get the footage MSP is after? $10,000-$50,000--per trip.

Do you think that big mountain footage just magically appears? Unfortunately it's a whole different ballgame shooting what MSP shoots and you guys who think MSP guys are off hanging on Fijian surf trips are tripping. It's the athletes (some) who get to do those things.

I work for MSP, and I barely buy anything at the grocery store that isn't on sale. My ipod is a 7-year old hand-me-down. I have the most basic cell phone plan and cell phone. My wife and I never go out to dinner, or movies, or concerts. I can't surf anymore because I can't afford the high gas prices to drive 4 hours to the beach. I make a tank of gas in my car last two months in the summer by riding my bike everywhere. My 2 year old has only hand-me down clothes. Why? Because that's what I have to do to get by and support my love for skiing. If I didn't luck out with a job that gives me limited access to free gear I'd probably be completely screwed.

When you live the way I do and someone who has no clue whatsoever spews about you being rich, well, it's enough to make you shake your head and wonder how uninformed or clueless someone can be.

What a moronic debate. fatbastard hating on Snarfsnarf but saying the exact same thing. We all know that MSP makes the best selling ski movies, other than warren miller. Like Snarfsnarf said, they're making movies for a more non-skiing crowd. Which, like he said, is a GOOD thing. Focused was the first movie that introduced me to twintips, and before I saw it I was thinking strongly of snowboarding instead of skiing. They converted me. MSP is good, I thank them like crazy. But why did I pick up that movie instead of 4bi9 or even Poorboyz? Because the biggest mountaineering store in Vancouver had MSP movies, and Warren Miller movies, not anything else or more specific.

The argument isn't if MSP makes money, or money-making movies, or in some people's eyes good movies. The argument was supposed to be that MSP's movies have been relatively the same for the past 5 years. Other than new tricks and new skiers, the vibes are the same and it all feels the same after a while. They used to make me stoked, but not any more. Other companies are constantly doing different things, staying fresh instead of stale, trying new formulas, not being afraid to have some failures. MSP to me is too big and has too big of an audience to try anything creative, because they legitimately fear losing the following that they have.

I seriously don't hate MSP, I respect them, but to me (and obviously some others) their movies just don't bring the stoke any more. I'm not whining and bitching for them to change, I just watch other companies' movies, but I thought I'd clear up some of this stuff from my point of view.

Man how do you not get stoked watching Hjorleifson, Abma, Hugo, Kaj etc. slay big lines and powder? Even if you hate the soundtrack the footage is still awesome. I don't get it, between them and TGR they have the most talented skiers. Not enough urban dolly shots and afterbang posing?

i know exactly what u mean, this is what iv been trying to say. but after the 4th or 5th time, that "magical big-mountain footage" just isnt magical anymore. Like when a super-big rock band re-releases and re-releases their old material, but with "digital remastering" and stuff, its not exciting. i get more stoked watching a low-budget backountry segment with some innovative angles and tricks, and good soundtrack. and no, i dont mean gangsta rap.

exactly. im not saying YOU'RE rich! MSP is rich as a company. they have the kind of budget that they can film anywhere they want with. i just think they could be a lot more creative with their choice in lines, angles, etc.
   7 sunny days was i believe the best msp movie in a long time.

Once you all see reasons, it should become pretty evident to everyone that this company has obliviously drifted off into complete irrelevance within the sport itself... it's not 2001 anymore, boys. Johnny and Berman and CP (and Jeff Thomas for that matter) just massacred you. Time to change your formula or become Warren Miller.

And as for your comment on created just to defend, I used to work at MSP well over a year ago now and am only defending these comments cuz they are blatent hate and are pointless..I got an Idea lets hate on a company who is putting the sport we all live and breathe and lots of us work in, and bash them for having the best cinematography out there, yet not edited to the likes of 15% of the market of skiers...And yes newschool skiing is no where near 3/4 of the skiers on the mountain. So by putting our sport in the eyes of others and creating revenue into this industry they are helping the cause...Your hate about it is doing nothing.
and your comment about Berman and CP and everyone else, Fuck yeah there movies are only getting better! That is awesome and more power to them and more stoke to the industry, but guess what yeah the movies have been close to the same for 5 years, but if your selling more movies than all the rest and turning around and dumping every penny back into it, why change????To stoke out just the newschool community? Shun out all the other people out there buying there $400 complete setup from Sports authority who enjoy going to see an MSP movie alongside a baggy pant wearing, twin tip wearing kid who is stoked to see Colby or Jacob slay it while they are there to see Davenport ski the Eiger. Fact is these guys are selling to a broader spectrum and bringing more money to skiing as a whole hence the sponsor support, and with out them, more and more ski companies are gonna be hurting like some that already are. Dont get me wrong I would love to just be partying with a bunch of younger shred heads at a 4bi9 premiere but we cant rely on all the kids who follow 4bi9 and companies like ninthward and these other smaller ski companies to keep our sport alive and growing, they just cant pay the bills. So I hope at least a couple dozen kids read this before MR JD deletes the post like ones that are always deleted when they make a valid point.

So rock on NS crowd and be stoked on all movie companies cuz guess what they are all making a certain crowd stoked to do one thing...Slide down hills with sticks on our feet.

MSP is good. Ski Movie 3 is the movie that got me into the "newschool" scene in the first place...It has a special place in my heart, haha. That being said, MSP movies now bore me. Just not interesting.

i like msp, i really like their big mountain athletes, they're way better than anyone in level 1 or the other companies that jibbers like and the filming is better also. maybe the park isn't as good but the big mountain kicks other companies asses

I really like MSP.  I'll agree that their films follow a formula, but it works.  It has a good mix of different aspects of skiing.  And like other people hav been saying, it appeals to a larger demographic of skiers.  Like my dad isn't really interested with park, but he likes the powder segs, my bro likes park more so he likes those segs more, and i like both.  I love park and big mountain, which is why i like MSP.  I say watch what u want and don't complain about that kinda stuff cus, well, u decided to watch it.  On another note, I'm also a big fan of Poor Boyz, Level 1, and Rage, so MSP isnt the only one i like.

stop hatin msps the shit... no hate to pbp but i did not like yeah dude a whole lot, cinematography was not that great whereas 7sdays had crazy cinematography and a lot of variety... idk all ski movies are sick and yeah dude was pretty entertaining i just think msp puts out more quality movies and puts a lot more effort/budget into their films

I know your most likely talking about turbo, and trying to discredit berman is just wrong. Sure he used the same type of filming that mack dawg did, but thats pretty normal if you realize that picture had some of the best filming ever seen in action sports! That doesnt mean its the same as the mack dawg. Turbo was like picture this, but with a much better vibe in my opinion. Didnt have the same personnality at all. And producers are allowed to be influence with everyone shouting out that they're copying something

i haven't been stoked by a MSP movie since SM3, once seth left (hmmm why did he leave?) it was clear msp was declining. it's funny how a ski movie company with a heli/AK budget are being compared to a bunch of U of U kids

Surely you were stoked by Seven Sunny Days?  Its the best MSP film ever and in the top few best overall films ever.  (Although SM3 is the film that made me buy my first twin tips and I've not seen Claim yet!)

The underlying point is, not everyone wants to watch a park kid slay rails, double grab a crispy 5, or 450 on,pretzel 540 switch up, blind 990 out...Newschoolers is community primarily dedicated to park and freestyle. If you want to watch that stuff (which I love to do, I too am part of NS) then buy a park related ski movie (level 1, 4bi9, STEPT (don't forget them, they're good!), Rage, etc. MSP doesn't need to adjust anything because, like mentioned, they sell movies with what they do. $20 says half the people that watch MSP's films wouldn't give a FUCK about level 1 or any aforementioned park crews.

So, with that said, if you buy an MSP film, you know what you're getting. Buy a Level 1 film, you know what you're getting. Buy a Warren MIller film, you know what you're getting...etc. Different films attract different skiers.

DON'T HATE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE FILM, JUST DON'T BUY IT!

Yeah, except not quite. Level 1 is different each year, so is PBP (though they're close to the same), so are Tanner's movies, so is Theory 3, etc. These guys are experimenting, that's why some of their movies are flops, but if they have a good one it's more refreshing to me than the usual MSP.

How is this even considered hate either? It's an opinion based on fact, and isn't even slandering MSP. Hate would fall under the category of "This movie sucks, the dudes who made it are such douches for making such a shitty movie". Nobody has actually said anything like that. Everyone has just said their opinion (the reason for NS).
