McCain just suspended his campaign

And wants to postpone the debate because of the financial crisis.

What do you guys think of this political move today? Good move, bad move? Tough to say. I think it's going to bounce back on him because I think a LOT of people have been looking forward to the debate friday. Should be interesting to watch how this unfolds towards the end of this week, as well as how the polls react.

Ya, but it doesn't draw attention to the issues, just to him and his campaign in general.

I think that Mccains ideas on how to get votes (Palin especially) will backfire.

you can't say that it has failed already, I think it is too early to tell. Although that is my opinion.  I don't necessarily think it was all a stunt either.  Isn't it the job of the president to show concern for the economy in an economic crisis? I think I'd be a little worried if the candidates acted like there was nothing to worry about, and just continued their campaign as normal.

I think his team looked at putting the campaign on hold, as a great way to grab the headlines, I don't think that it was put on hold out of necessity to deal with other issues....

Because we've created a political system where an honest candidate has no hope of success.

The American media deserves to be lined up against a wall and shot for the obscene level of stupidity and frivolity to which they've lowered the electorate.  I know, I know...if there wasn't a demand...yada yada yada.  But I'm gonna go with blaming the pusher in this case.

Unfortunately it's the only source for most people.  I try to just watch the speeches, I really don't give a fuck what someone like Katie Couric has to tell me about her own opinions.  Or any reporter for that matter.

i never said it had any sort of relevance to his presidential bid.  thats because it doesn't.  however it does contain some sort of relevance as a response to the "mccain is old and cant use a computer" posts. 

and i dont think he was ever "in" the "veitcong"

Something else interesting. Apparently in this meeting that was so important he suspended his campaign for, he deferred speaking on the issue, allowing his elder party mates to take control. He then proceeded to not talk for 45 MINUTES until obama asked him to voice his opinions.... interesting

i have no idea. i heard the report from another guy in the room on the news. i dont think it was recorded though. just a photo op at the beginning. hahaha the threat of the economy is immanent! now hold on while we take some photos....

I don't know if the above is true, but the reports from everyone coming out of the meeting was a) it was a pointless waste of time slash photo-op, and b) McCain didn't say much anyway and brought a campaign staffer instead of a senate staffer (D'oh).

Meanwhile people phoning McCain campaign HQs around the country have reported back in and... there has been absolutely zero disruption to the campaign, it's still going strong! Which also explains why the campaign summoned the press in Pennsylvania to Sarah Palin's arrival by plane today (photo-optastic) and why Tucker Bounds has been making an ass of himself all over the cable networks all day. So the suspending the campaign thing... kind of a lie.

I heard it put really, really well earlier: "John McCain, the notorious gambler, has just gone all-in betting on the stupidity of the American electorate."

you obviously know nothing,  i quote this from another source because this guy said it best,

John McCain's top economic advisor, former Sen. Phil Gramm, is the guy who authored the deregulation law that most agree is the ultimate cause of today's financial meltdown. Tomorrow's and probably next week's too. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. John Thain, CEO of Merrill Lynch, which swirled into brokerage oblivion today, is one of McCain's top economic advisers too. And now McCain says he's going to clean up the mess by putting in tighter regulations and oversight even though he's always supported lax oversight and his top economics guy is the one who loosened the rules in the first place.

i thought it was a good move. i know the debate is a big thing and people look forward to it, but it was a good move.

The economy is way more important than a debate, and you can reschedual a debate you cant reschedual the economy..

i would argue that NOTHING could be more important right now than these debates. its deciding who will run this country for the next 4 years, and try and get us out of this mess. i think its important that the american people can be educated in making that decision


in other news wa mu failed today, but jp morgan bought them out, so crisis averted for now.

Republicans think that it was a good move to suspend the talk to deal with the crisis.

well first and foremost mccain is a senior us senator.  he feels his resposability is to preform his duties as such in this current time of economic tormoil.  i have to applaude his efforts here.  to postpone the debate a week or two.  wont hurt any thing and both sen obama and sen mccain can fullfill their sentorial duties.  ( but obama prob wont cause in his 2 years as a senator he only ever showed up to vote about 15% of the time

at yesterday's emergency meeting with bush, neither mccain nor obama offered a solution to the problem.  maybe neither is fit to be president.  and i heard that W.bush is the first president with an MBA?  ha.

Four reasons you're an idiot for believing this BS.

1. John McCain hasn't suspended his campaign. He is flat out lying. He gave a speech in New York. His campaign HQs are running normally. His ads are still up. His surrogates are still smugly attacking Obama on major networks. His staffers are still e-mailing updates to the press. He's still taking contributions. His campaign is doing everything it was before.

2. John McCain has no role in this bailout package negotiation other than to vote. Look at what happened. A general framework was agreed upon before  he decided to fake-suspend the campaign, he goes to Washington (with a little stop-off chez Katie Couric on CBS to... not... campaign?) to "help". The deal falls apart overnight. Great leadership there, John. Chairman of House Financial Services Barney Frank:
"Senator McCain has said he had to interrupt his campaign and couldn’t do a debate because he had to come here to help us. God save us from such help. But in any case, there is no sign whatsoever that Senator McCain’s got any real role here, so he certainly ought to feel free to go back and debate."
Right now Frank and Dodd are holding the congress together with their bare hands while republicans try to figure out how they can best make this into a piece of political theatre to boost sagging poll numbers. If you want to eat up their political hackery with a spoon, be my guest, but you're still an idiot.

3. How can someone who has no clue, absolutely none, who has said he wants the Fed to cut interest rates to zero leading to the demolition of banking and most likely the entire economy because he doesn't understand what they do... how can such a person "help" in this time of economic chaos?

4. There isn't enough time to postpone the debate as currently scheduled. If a debate is postponed, another debate will have to be cancelled. Likely the VP debate. Gee, what with the complete fool of herself Palin has been making in interviews of late, I can't imagine why they'd want to get rid of the VP debate! More strategizing to pull the wool over the eyes of the electorate, please.

John McCain is not going to fix anything. More than likely he's going to attempt to amend the bill in some insignificant way, or have republicans credit him with something, so that he can go on cable news and tell the country what a hero he is for saving everyone from financial ruin. This is ALL politics, and the fact that you can't come to grips with that entirely eliminates your credibility. Keep drinking that kool-aid.

O does anyone else know that McCAin was ahead of the curve on this? well he was, 2005 bitches.

JD, you must have the memory of a small mammal, no body (who is smart anyway) has ever said "vote for McCain because he is war hero"
