As soon as they find conclusive scientific evidence against religion, make a movie about it. But interviewing people who aren't really fit to represent religion is a low move.

It's not so much religion that he's lambasting, it's peoples' attitudes towards religion... ie, big dude saying he'll beat you up if you question his religion, or "Senator, This guy's running our country and he believes X. Doesn't that scare you?" "You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate". That's your answer? Really?

One thing that annoyed me about that preview, and always annoys me, is the "why doesn't he just wipe out evil in the world?" "He will." That skeptic's question has been answered over and over again for hundreds of years since Hume, and asking it again is basically just being a dick. Bill knows that.

Anyway I still want to see this.

oh, i misinterpreted the slap.

and I agree about your post above too: people shouldn't be too aggresive over their religion, although the movie looks like its trying to shove atheism in peoples faces and thats what I wanted to show was low.

that can be used both ways:

there's no proof that god doesn't exist, therefore he must.

there's no proof that god exists, therefore he must not.

yet for some reason, people who argue against the existance of god, seem to think that the second argument for some reason isn't a negative proof fallacy, yet the first one is.

The 'no proof god exists therefore he doesn't' argument is more based on common sense than logical proof in and of itself; people are (or should be) using it to assert that, given the lack of any real proof of God's existence, why would you believe in something so odd? They make a good point, if you care about that sort of thing.

That being said, I believe in God, I don't have any evidence to support said belief, I don't want any and I don't really care if anyone else shares that belief.

good post.

My point was that, people who argue against God, seem to think that their argument holds more water than the the opposing argument.  When in fact it doesn't. I agree that their argument can be used most effictively in questioning someone's logic, though.  Hence the birth of the flying spaghetti monster.

I would actually probably be more interested in seeing a movie that took the other point of view.  Then, rather than reinforcing my current viewpoint I would actually be thinking. 

But this will still be interesting, so I'll go anyway.

my arugment is if you were brought up in the middle east and were told your whole life about the koran would you still be catholic? Or if you were brought up buddist in asia would you still belive in god? no youd belive in what you were brought up to belive and defend that religion. anyway i think imposing athisims on people is just as bad as people imposing there beliefs on you. but this movie does look funny and ill probaly see it.

This movie is going to be great... I really can't wait to see it. I was always taught not to talk about religion or politics, but controversy is so much fun. ahaha I am a spiritual person and I believe in something of a greater power, but these extremists are "religulous".

I'm pretty sure that's a joke.

anyways, I'm kind of a deist.  i believe in a sort of intelligent design.  evolution itself is a very strange concept that follows a set of rules (such as aging), almost as if someone is conducting an experiment.  also, why are there rules to our universe?

I don't believe religion is the cause of bad things, I believe that stupid people are.  I was raised as a quaker and I do not believe any of these ultra-right wing nutjobs are true christians.  they do not value compassion whatsoever.

bill maher isn't trying to "impose atheism." hes trying to get more people to question their beliefs. he isn't even really an atheist. that would imply that he believes that there is no god, when what he actually believes is that he doesn't know and that nobody else knows either and that its pointless to pretend like we know.

are you serious? Show me one piece of evidence that proves religion.

Heres a fact you probablydont know. There are written history's about the times of "jesus" In those histories the name Pontius Pilote is mentioned, the emperors name is mentioned they were alll real people. In NONE of those histories is the name jesus ever mentioned. The first time the name jesus comes up is close to 100 yrs later when the first gospel was written.

Its also fun to know that 2000 yrs before Jesus there was a pagan story of god being born of woman and be crucified on december 25th. ... kind of the same thing with the Gilgamesh epic which was formed into the story of Noah.

So if you can find ANY evidence that there is a god I'd be willing to listen. But religion has destroyed billions of lives and ending religion is the only way to save the wolrd.

I agree.
Im agnostic but i would never say that god doesn't exist.  There's just no explanation for the beginning of the universe and I doubt there ever will be in the near fututre.

be your own person. you dont need a regulatory commitee of people checking in on how your doing and asking for money to fund the spread of a false idol. if we'd all just get along and accept all for who they are and what they bring to the table, there wouldn't be millions dieing due to war and conflict. i can't believe there are people who need a crutch to lean on when they can't just accept that what they do to themselves is just life, not the power of an ultimate being. sometimes i think about a god's role in my life, and i just can't admit to myself that there is something that has more control over my life than my own actions, my karma, and the little bit of luck i think i have. and if all else fails, i can turn to math and science to explain my being. i just have to remember that science and math change as we learn more, and religion never shakes from human interest.
