Which classic skis should I chop up?

Hey Guys,

A couple years ago I got ran over by a boat, and as a result, I'm missing a leg. Luckily, skiing hard is something that is still doable on one leg, and so it's basically all I do these days.

I ski with outriggers, which are like crutches with little 12" skis on the ends. I use these outriggers for balance and for hiking, lift lines, etc. 

I am designing a pair of custom outriggers, which will have titanium tubes, and they'll be way rugged. Here's my question:

I have to chop off the first foot of two skis in order to make these outriggers. I think it would be sick to use a pair of classic or memorable skis, instead of just any crappy pair. Which skis do you think I should use for these outriggers?

So far I'm thinking either red, white and blue classic K2's, or yellow Saloman 1080's. Any ideas?

what available to you?  original 1080s, 1260s, scrach fs, ar5s, etc would all look sweet and be a great way to keep a classic ski going.  Also mad props to what you're doing ++++++++karma

wow dude i thought it was gonna be for an art project but that first line just threw me way off.  do some 1080's man thatd be sooooo ill.  hopefully the first foot includes the old logo.

i like the idea of the red white and blue k2s. such a sick ski. i found a pair at the dump, there not in the BEST condition if i remimber right though

1080s might be tough to mount up with the foam core. And older pair of wood cores might be good. The guys I know with outriggers all have race skis. A prime classic ski would be a pair of Olin Mark 5s. Or find 1 lonely twin tip and chop both ends off, like an enemy or mad trix.

From a structural standpoint I would think that you'd want a core without any foam in it... but from an awesomeness perspective, I would do the girly scratch fs. K2s pretty good too though.

damn dude sorry to hear about your accident, a couple years ago my foot got cut by the boat propeller and i had to get about 90 stitches. But thats nothing to your injury. Good luck bro its awesome that your still doing what you love.

hey i dont know if someone already suggested it, but you could buy a new pair of twin tips, cut both the rear and the front on 1 ski, and keep the other for skiing? Just an idea :P

I don't know how to quote, so I'll just try to answer peoples' questions:

"Can you do tricks?"

I can land switch 180s off most little jumps (like little chair tower jumps) and thinks like big banks and natural halfpipes. That's about it for tricks I'm afraid. My goals for this next season are a) land a backflip at Grizzly, and b) land a 3.  The thing about hitting jumps is that my hands are busy holding the outriggers, so grabs are about impossible, making any jump I do look pretty gay.

"Do you ride park?"

Not really. I'll hit spines no problem, but I don't really do tables anymore. I've skied over a box at Whister before, but I don't have too many plans to improve in the park department. I've got a pretty fragile pelvis with some fat screws in it, and if I fall hard, it could break fairly easily. For this reason, I stick to powder mostly.

"Do width of the outriggers matter?"

No, but I'd prefer somthing pretty skinny, as in tip

I'm putting bolts all the way through the ski, with the nuts on top, as opposed to screwing into the core only (like a binding would be) I'll countersink the heads into the base and ptex over them. Because I'm doin it this way, I don't think wood will have an advantage over foam.

How will foam be once I cut it? Would it be a good idea to epoxy the cut end to seal it off?

I've skied with Phil Chew, the best skier on one leg, ever. He was best friends with Dave Murray, and still lives in Whistler. (I can keep up with him fine, but his stamina is incredible. He didn't want to stop once on Peak to Creek, on one leg.) For his outriggers, he uses Atomic downhill skis for their strength.

As for using one twin tip, I could do it if the tip and tail were identical shape and flex.
