Which new video camera? + karma

so my friend wants to get a decent camera for next season. not something too expensive but will work well for small edit type stuff. he basically gave me a list of cameras- soo which would be best? or maybe any other recommendations or places he could find them cheap?
ok heres what he gave me-

Sanyo Xacti HD1010

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

Canon VIXIA HF100

Canon HF10

ya, i'd skip those cameras. If you want a hi-def consumer camera, i'd stick with the canon HV30. HDV is really the best way to go for consumer level cams. HV30 is the first (and only i think?) consumer HD camera that can record 24p and 30p, It blows away most of the competition.

I would wait until Sony releases the fx 1000, I think you can pre order it on bhphoto.com

Nah, there have definitely been different cameras that are HDV and shoot progressive.


And did you ^^ really recommend a fx1000?
Horrible suggestion, hv20 or hv30 would be perfect for you.

Doesn't canon have the only cameras under 1000 that record both 24 and 30p? I've looked through sony and panasonic consumer line, and they seem to all be 60i only.

And as to the comment above, The FX1000 sounds way out of his price range. Even waiting for the FX7 drop in price is a bit of a stretch.

i everyone wants to get super super tech about everything, absolutely ZERO HDV cameras have the ability to record true progressive. Well actually i take that back, if u mount a hard disk to them and shoot 30p then i think it might be true 30...
Actually all hdv tapes know is 60i, it just uses pull down to capture 30p and 24p... so its not i guess what is called "pn" in a way if its under 60.

Anyways if your new to cameras yeah i would suggest the hv30 (or whatever number they are on). Its not anything spectacular but it would get the job done; however, if you really interested in pursuing some sort of future in filming i would tend to back away from those. Get an FX1 (pretty cheap) or even a gl2 or vx2100 from sony. Those are cameras that you can learn how cameras work and what settings work best and such. They are more customizable than that consumer camera. You can actually make a gl2 and vx2100 look pretty good.

If were getting technical about it, then you need to shoot on film to have "true" progressive images, but the idea of 24p on a digital camera is to mimic the look of film as much as possible without paying ton to get it.

You really don't need to spend 2000 dollars to get great images. In good lighting my HV20 produces images that are comparable to my XHA1, and there are many circumstances in which I would choose my HV20 over the more professional and customizable camera. If you're a beginner or intermediate, you should care more about the images you can make with your camera, not how professional or expensive your camera looks. I've used GL2's and while they are more customizable, they really cannot compare to an HV20/30 in picture quality. There's a reason why everyone on these threads tells noobs or intermediate filmers to buy this camera. It really is an amazing buy.

If you want some dope 24p then buy a DVX(panasonic) if you can afford it. The settings might be a little more complicated than on a GL2 or Vx2100, but if you know how to use a DVX it can rape a gl2 or vx.

or should i tell my friend all those cameras on his list suck...?

It's not that those cameras are terrible, but within that price range, you'd be much better off with a canon HV30.

Hmm pretty positive that a lot of cameras shoot true progressive one frame at a time with no pulldown... im actually certain that the 24pn and 30pn and 60p in dvc pro hd cameras (720) is true progressive... idk unless the genius himself, Barry Green, gave me wrong information... haha guys crazy.

But yeah i see what your saying about the picture quality, it amazes me sometimes seeing how good the quality can be outta that tiny thing.

I dont see how it picks up as good lighting though? Its only a 1/2" single CMOS. I had trouble with our old 3 1/4" CMOS sensor V1Us in low light.

Im just saying what i said, cuz if you jump up from the hv20 to say a hvx or something, you wont know what your doing at all with the camera.

^no, i have no idea about anything about cameras. my friend said he was skeptical about the mini DVDs and was wondering if they're better than the flash memory of the other cameras?

lol mini dvd,

don't listen to any advice he gives you.

and you can get an xl1s for pretty cheap, my buddy just picked one up for $500 and it dosn't have to many hours on the heads.
