Shopping for tripods

Im looking to get a high quality tripod because i have a $30 one from best buy

so i was thinking the bogen 501?

people have been posting about the sanford davis should i spend an extra 70$ for the bogen???

I have a stanford and its heavy as balls (which is good for stability) but not fun to lug around the mtn or into the backcountry. I have never used the 501 but hear great things about it. Also the Stanford gets verry stiff in cold weather.

I havent used any other heads. I just know when its cold its hard to keep the legs of the tripod on the ground thats how hard i need to push it.

Okay so sorry my post got screwed up there, but go to that link and there's a ton of info on tripods. More than I've had the time to read for sure. I've been planning on buying one as well because I have an old one that's basically falling apart right now. keep us updated on what you're deciding on/ what you buy because I may do the same or something similar.

thanks for the link but it was mostly about ball head tripods instead of fluid ones like the Bogen manfrotto 501

I have a the 501 HDV head. It's the best tripod I've used in that price range. I like at lot of the features, 75mm Ball, adjustable drag on pan and tilt, counter balance system... not to mention the illuminated level. I'm not sure what other model you are referring to, but I looked at some tripods by that manufacturer and they didn't seem to have all those features. Hope that helps.

I should add that I had a fluid head Libec tripod before the manfrotto. It would get sticky in the cold. The manfrotto does not, due to the adjustable drag.
