Replying to Epic 2 Day Surf on Superior's North Shore
So I'm pretty stoked! It started Thursday when a big storm was moving over Lake Superior. SW winds were picking up and I got a call from my bud in Terrace Bay, ON, telling me it's gonna go off. So I jumped into my van and drove the 2 and half hours to Terrace, getting there around 6:30 pm. When I got there these sick sets were coming in, from 5 to 6 foot faces. As soon as I saw those waves I jumped out of my van and into my wet suit, and with only 3 other people in the water and no sharks to eat me (take that hawii) we had an amazing sunset sesh and everyone was killin it.
Next morning me and my brah kenny woke up at about 8 30 am to zero winds, so naturally we're like "fuck the waves are done". Because of that we took our time getting down to the beach but when we did we got a huge suprise. We got out of the truck to glassy smooth monsters. The sets were coming in with 8+ foot faces and more often than not breaking the 10 foot barrier. Paddling out was a bitch, taking us 10 to 15 minutes sometimes, just getting pumbled and not being able to get an opening in the waves. But once you got out there it was amazing. We joined up with another small group of friends in the water past the break. All of us are semi new a little intimmedated to drop, but didn't want to pass up the oppertunity so we went for it. Everyones' first few waves turned out to be ass kicking sessions, but slowly we started catching them. I remeber the first wave I grabbed and rode, I turned toe side instead of heal and found my self pushing off the mush which was taller then me in a desprate attempt to stay up. It finally overtook me and I had to hold me breath for a bit. When I finally popped back up it dawned on me that, that wave was probably a 10 footer, a 4 foot taller face then my next biggest ever. As we started catching more and more, the stoke level went through the roof, and all 5 of us were yelling and cheering every time someone would start to paddle in and not let up till they popped up from the other side. I don't think you coulda kicked the smiles off our faces. At about 2 30 pm we could barely move we were so tired, so we went for lunch. We needed red bull just to stay awake for our food, but like troopers we headed back. When we got back the caverillary had arrived and there was about 15 people in the water, the sun was out (one guy even went with out a wet suit) and the waves had also died a bit to a more managable size for me and some others but left some guys that had to work wishing they had called in sick. It was awsome, catching some waves and watching some exceptional fresh water surfing (both long and short boarding) until dusk. When the surfing was done there was a ripping bon fire on the beach with no shortage of beers and some guitars being passed around.
Saturday we woke up to shifting winds and really really really sore muscles. Had we not woken up so late we would have made the drive down to Marqutte Michigan for the day where it looked like it had awsome potential. But the day was not lost, we went on a drive then a massive hike and a few beers later may have found Lake Superiors first known point breaks.
Anyways that's the story and if there are spelling mistakes im sorry im super tired and I might be able to get some pics for later.
