Never buy a used beacon unless you can test it in person. Having avy gear wont save you or anyone else unless you know how to use it proficiently. Practice Practice Practice before the real thing actually happens.
With that being said, I have an Ortoxox M2 Beacon that is super user friendly and I really like, the only down side is that it doesnt automatically reset from receive to transmit after a specified period of time (If your searching for someone and get buried your SOL) A couple of my friends have Trackers and they seem pretty user friendly as well. For a beginner those are two good beacons to look at. Remember though that gear does absolutely nothing without the proper knowledge of how to use it and how to assess whether you should ski that line or not.
