So now that oil is below $100 a barrel..

Why are we still paying $5 a gallon for diesel!?!?!  it seems like gas has come down at least to ~$4.30 but diesel hasn't seemed to have changed in like six months..


I know there is no way to get around teh political side but I'm just asking why is diesel so much more stable.. road taxes that are fluctuating?

besides, shouldn't diesel be cheaper because its more of a raw form than reg unleaded.

nope. there are less refineries in the united states for diesel than gasoline, which also explains why the cost has remained the same.

Its the speculators that push the price of oil up, as Justin already mentioned. The reason diesel is so still so high is supply and demand. Diesel is a byproduct of gasoline. This is why diesel started out being so cheap but as more people started driving diesel vehicles the demand went up faster than the supply did so that is why diesel costs more than gasoline.

thats crazy 5 dollars per gallon? most ive had to pay was $3.85 ish.

oh wtf.. gas was $4.85 in July and diesel was $5.29 for like the whole summer.  gas just went down about 20 cents in the last week.  I just filled up this afternoon and it was $4.81, unleaded gas was $4.36

wtf....jeeeeeez. i drive down to my g mas lake place everytime i need gas because for some reason her state has cheaper gas... 20 cents atleast. so its at like 3.75ish now but it was 3.90 maxed this summer? thats when i car pooled so didnt fill up on gas. now im driving to school and what not so its cool.

yeah during the school year I don't drive as much.  But still $150 fillups are killer.

at college they explained that to us why diesel is now more expensive than gas: when petroleum is extracted, they refine it in certain proportions: ex they refine a lot more gas than diesel, and more diesel than tar.  So when gas prices began to get higher, people bought diesel cars because it was cheaper by then.  But, oil companys kept the same ratios so there was more and more diesel that was selling, and they werent refining more diesel.  So they just decided to sell diesel at a higher price so less people would buy it, keeping the ratios at the same level

So if you pay 5$ for one gallon diesel it would be 1,32$ per Liter - Over here in Austria we pay about 1,30€ (1,835$) for a liter. So that means it would be 6,95$ for one gallon.

If I have a 60liter car (15,85 gallons) it would be a difference of 31$ when filling up the car.
I thought there would be more difference. Interesting.

(work bores me at the moment)

Woah, fuel is pricey up in AK.

Diesel is $4.30 a gallon here, and gas is $3.67 a gallon for 87.
