Long vs. Short ++karma

What are some of the pros and cons of a longer ski compared to the pros and cons of a shorter ski in terms of rails, jumps, butters etc.?

a longer ski will give you more stability whereas a shorter ski can be squirrley. a shorter ski would be better for tec rail tricks.

long ski:
Pros. Faster, deep carve (it feels better), better in pow, more stable, and easier landings on big jumps.
Cons: More swing wait, hard to butter, Longer radius turns. and harder to balance on rails

short skis:
Pros: Short turning radius, Quicker butters, better to balance on rails. I think it is quicker on the tight trees. Like REALLY TIGHT.
Cons: the pros of a long skis

and for butters it really depends on the flex though a shorter ski might make butters a bit easier. but it always gonna be easier to butter say a 181 t hall than a 169 pe.

so basically to sum it up, short ski= park ( not to short though)
                                         long ski = big mountain ( way easier to bomb out of cliffs, and pillow lines etc.)

long skis, pros : stability, versatility, extra weight
more edge means more hold on hardpack/ice, more weight gives more stability at high speeds, able to ski out of the park and in the park with less difficulty. more area to land on, holds speed and stomps better for jumps
cons:extra weight

short skis pros: light, easier to use
cons: lack of stability and versatility

hahahahahaha pretty much the message.

I actually ended up going with skis a little shorter than what I wanted (164) cuz they were on sale and I have no money. But I dont think theyll be bad at all, if anything itll be better for trying new things.

161 at the least.

im guessing your still pretty young right now, so your probably going to be growing this season. i would suggest something around 161-165 area at least.

go by this, at least as tall as you are, maybe taller if you are young and growing if you are an experienced skier

Id deffinately go with a medium to long ski around your forhead and up area, kids with short skis might find it easier to jib on rails with but they deffinately dont look as good

Aside from the park stuff, long skis will force you to become a better skier.  You will have to work harder to control your turns, body movement, etc. and will inherently gain skill.

Plus, long skis look way better when you're in the air.

That isn't too big if he knows what he's doing.  My all-mountain skis are 180s, but I don't get a chance to ride steeps and pow much.  I'm 5'11", and I've demoed 190s before.  I would consider getting some if I was going to be riding bc a lot.

go for the 161s. staight up. but what skis are they? if your gonna be mounting them center they will feel alot shorter than if you mounted them back.

I like shorter skis for trees and jibbing, because the trees are usually really tight where I ski and you can do more tech tricks as stated above on rails, etc. Long skis like for wide open powder runs, drops, jumps and just skiing in general.

A little bit, but it won't make a huge difference at that size.  It's more noticeable when you're comparing a park ski with a big mountain.  I do think, though, that longer skis make floating spins (as opposed to cranking them around) a little easier since you'll have more stability in the air.

this is purely a matter of preference. I like both actually, for different things.. I am 5'8 and i have a pair of 169s and a pair of 181s. The shorter ones are actually really fun on groomers, easy to whip around on to rails. The longer ones are more stable, easier to balance on, better for slower spins, easier to control etc.

5'8" and i ride 176, centermounted for park.  great size in my opinion.  I would prefer more a 171 on rails, but for what i do (ski all mountain and hit the whole park, more jumps usually) i like mine.  butters and such are easier on small skis also.
