although this thread will fall on mostly deaf ears as most of the people on ns have little interest in football, i thought i would tell you whats up in england.
Last night was the last night of the transfer window (the period of time in which players can transfer from club to club), normally this is a busy time as clubs have a last grasp attempt to complete their squads for the season ahead. Yesterday however was different.....
Manchester City used to be owner by the former Thai Prime Minister (who incidently faced charges of corruption and money laundring) he then sold his stake in the club some hideously rich arabs. These arabs then put a bid in for Robinho of Real Madrid (who had been chased by chelsea for ages and stated endless times he wanted to go to chelsea), Gomez of Germany, Villa of Valencia and Berbatov of Spurs (who was on his way to Man Utd) that comes to a combined total of 120million pounds worth of talent (250+m dollars, give or take). They ended up with just Robinho for 30+m.
My point is that at the moment most of the money in football is in england because it is the strongest league, and within 4 or 5 clubs. These clubs can literally afford to buy anyone they like and pay them whatever the the player demands (madrid and barca being the only clubs outside england who can afford this). This is severly damaging football as it is becoming a monopoly and players are only at the club to pick up their wage packets, they couldn't really care how well they play. A prime example was shevchenko when he was at chelsea. They paid 30 million quid for him and 130,000 grand a week for him. he was a severe flop and cost about 5 million a goal.
i'd be interested in what anyone else thinks about the state of football in europe at the moment
