So I stay with this racer and he tunes everynight. I was wondering if you ever tune  your skiis? If so how often and what do you do? Hot Wax, edges, diamond, petex etc..

i wax about 1 time a month if my skis are lucky. the first thing i do when i get new skis is dull the shit out of my edges with at rock. thats pretty much the extent of my tuning.

i round my edges off when i get new skis.... i wax about once a week or when my bases get dry. And i ptex everything, i like my bases smooth

yeah dude i dull them. edges dont do that much for freestyle. makes it a lot easier to butter and they dont get cought on rails.

twice a year:
Stone grind
sharpen edges with 3 degree bevel
run diamond stone over edges, rounding underfoot
smooth out with gummy stone.

every 2-3 ski days:
Hot wax, p-tex anything that is needed

every ski day:
Run gummy stone over all edges, and a lot underfoot.

OMG TY for this thread. Ok so last year i got my skis tuned and i told them not to sharpen the edges because ive heard you can catch an edge really easily. Well they sharpen my edges anyways and for like 2 weeks I was really scared to hit a rail haha so i just hit kickers and boxs then i finnally hit a rail and everything was fine. But yea so is sharpeing your edges good or bad?

Sharpening is fine.  If you are doing a lot of rails though, I would suggest rounding underfoot (it will happen eventually anyway)  just make sure your edges are burr free, that is key!

Also maybe consider asking them if they will put a larger bevel on it (I do 3 degrees, 1 degree is normal)  That way your edges are still sharp, but less likely to hang up.  It takes some getting used to, but I think it is worth it.

i wax when i feel it needs it and sharpen when i feel it needs it and dull under foot but not the whole ski becasue when i ride pipe it would be death

well, last season i waxed my invaders twice the whole season!!!

you know thats backwards right? gummy stone is first then diamond then bastard file.

but yeah im pretty lazy so when im bored in the summer i prep my skis like a mofo then just kinda once or twice a month whenever i feel like it. for conditions of course.

I got told that you shouldn't bevel the base edge at all except the ocassional diamond stone and that you shouldn't bastard file the edges unless it's necesary because it stuffs with the straightline of the edge because noone can do completely even pressure. Anyone else hear this?

Wax prior to every time the skis hit snow and always store them with wax - especially during the summer months. It's super obvious in care when me and the fellas get stuck on the cat tracks of Vail or Bird.

Sharpen twice a month but only the piste skis and some of pipes. Jibbing skis are tune with a good ol draggin through the parking lot to the tune of others screaming "maybe if you paid for your stuff you'd learn to appreciate it more! "

did you hear it from a racer? racers need all the edge they can get so it will grip the snow but free stylers pretty much need need enough to turn.

Yeah I did. That makes more sense. My friend who's a racer was tuning my skiis because my edges were completely blunt.

thats what i do to prep my race skis before a race....and then waxing for a race i do a layer of LF hot wax and then a layer of HF hot wax and brush brush brush brush!.....and then also hot boxing speed skis is fun stuff...

on my not race skis i usually just do layers of CH but occasionally LF depending on the snow quality...and do that about once a week....and do the edges with a 3 degree bevel 2 or 3 times a year...depending on how beat up they get....also when i get new skis i do hot wax like a fool and tune the edges accordingly...

i love tuning and waxing skis...so sometimes i just do it for the hell of it when im bored...

Park skis MAY get a wax when they are running slow.

My all-mountain skis will get edges at least once a year as needed as they never see rails and I like to be able to hook on ice.

wax every 2-3 ski days and sharpen prob every week or two with 1 degree bevel iv never hung up and do a good amount of rails dont really find it a problem

I race so I wax my race skis like every few days (they're actually Rossi Bandits so theyre not really race skis but i use them for racing)
And I wax my other skis whenever they look dry, usually once a week

i never do edges. ever.

i do wax once in while, but i dont get a lot of chances cause i ski so much. even though i ride like 70+ days a year i wont wax more than 5 times a year max.

i rarely do ptex either, just because its never worked for me. it just falls out

lol, yup. I got my park skis out the other night as I was bored and waiting for winter. Ended up doing a petex, edge (but not under foot) and wax tune up. It's ridiculous how much playing with skis can get you stoked on winter coming round.

I work in rentals so its really easy for me to just wax my ski's before I go out, but its shitty wax that comes off pretty fast so I do that almost every day. I like to go get my ski's tuned at least once a year by someone else, because I tend to mess it up I think.

Well I don't tune my park skis. Powder skis and all-mountain skis I tune somewhat regularly.

i dont do alot of rails, but i do some big mountain  and bc stuff, so i keep my skis sharper than razors, and slicker than ky jelly, i use toko s3 wax usauly for my twins but when i want to really go i put on some hf, i bearly use it on the twins because its 100 dollars a brick, but s3 is cheap. for the edges i use a combo of svst tools and diaflex diamonds. if you need any tuning stuff check out http://skatewerks.com/spwocuptuwat.html   also they can special order anything

different waxes have to do with the structure of the snow crystals and water content of the snow and how it will interact with the molecular structure of the wax....

CH= hydrocarbon....your standard wax made of hydrogen and carbon (duh), the cheapest. its pretty tough and brittle wax. its better for colder snow and reduces basic friction components....

LF= lo fluro...good quality wax, basic race tuning
HF= hi fluoro....most expensive

fluoros (fluorinated paraffins) are better for new and wet snow. it resists oil and dirt and i think its more hydrophobic than your standard CH. its a lot softer wax. most racers use it becuase its fast in your typical snow conditions.

theres also fluorocarbons which are a synthetic compound made exclusively of flourine and carbon that you rub in to the ski by hand versus hot wax. we call this "speed juice" and ususally apply it at the start. you dont really use flourocarbons except for speed races (ie DH and SuperG)

also base prep wax, which i think is just CH?. i use that for storage wax or if im concerned about oxidation on the base

I use the basic wax (i think its CH) not only cause of the money but i heard that the LF and HF are really bad for the environment

first time I get skis: I detune the shit out of the tip and tail right where they curve up. if they are park skis, I detune a bunch underfoot too. I set the edges at 1 degree and 1 degree, just out of habit. Then I wax them twice

I wax my skis every 5-10 days I put on them. If I hit rocks, I will run a fine stone over them that night to de-bur them. I hardly ever do base grinds, it takes away from the life of the ski IMO so only if I really need it (concave base)

I p-tex whenever it's needed.

park skis: detune wen i get them, leave em like that. unless theres a big chunk or somthin out, then ill try to fix it up a little, but still leave it detuned. wax every now n then, just depends on the wear n tear and how they're sliding


all mtn: tune/wax wenever they need it

tuning edges on park skis is rather pointless, you'll just keep grinding your edges away. wax is nice though. I only wax my skis like once or twice a year but that's just cause i'm too lazy.

On my park skis I completely round off under the bindings and give the rest a good detune. Every 3 days if I have time they get a deburr and wax. Your edges will last a lot longer if you keep them smooth.
