I'm sitting here killing time before work and jonesing for snow, and I need to make a comment. I'm a ski patroller at a small local hill in Quebec, and have been for 5 years. Im not an old fart, I'm 22, I have a pair of twins, and I love to play in the pipe almost as much as I love fresh pow.

BUT, kids today are wrecking their own sport. Our hill has become overrun with kids that swagger around, ski fakie through traffic without caring where the hell they end up, huck blind off lips, and generally act like irresponsible assholes. It used to be snowboarders that pissed the general public off, now its 'twin tippers' as they are labeled by many people.

THEN, these kids go on this site complaining that the park sucks, a pipe should be built, etc, etc right after they boast about how they scam skiing without paying for it. I also read several posts about how to steal food from the local cafeteria. KIDS, SKI HILLS ARENT YOUR MOMMA. If you want better parks/pipe etc, support the hill! Our hill is a local mom and pop operation, we dont check tickets every run like the militant Intrawest Nazis at Tremblant, so RESPECT!!!!

Also remember, there are many types of skiing, and respect them all. It takes as much balls to wear a skin suit and rip a GS course a 70 mph as to boost in the pipe. (Altho I'd rather be in the pipe).

And as I've said before, unless you can ski like Tanner, LOSE THE FRIKIN ATTITUDE. YOU ARENT ALL THAT, and if all you can ski is the park/pipe, you arent a true skiier. Try to develop a balance of skills, ski on a pair of 210's once in a while just for the hell of it.

Well I hope this gets kids thinking...and if I get hate mail, well, bring it. Just try this... try to break the steryotype thats forming of 'twin tippers' by being respectful of others, skiing responsibly, and above all having fun..cuz thats what skiing is all about.

fortuuuune is ok, but yeah they do need a better park, the best thing about that place is i rode there like 4 times last year and didnt buy a lift pass once. they dont care, or theyre just really stupid and if you get caught just go to a different chair and try and ride it, the trick is to just sit in the middle of every one and to go at night.'

This is the kinda thing that pisses me off.

Ski hills arent your mommy and daddy, they cant give something for nothing. (Im talkign about little operations here, not fat cats like intrawest). And were not 'Stupid' we know that kids ride there for free all the time, its just that management does not want to be militant, because skiing is all about fun!! And no one has fun when kids are getting yanked from chairs and sent home!
So PLEASE, HAVE SOME RESPECT, or we will kick your ass off the hill.

Uhh says who? I think many types of skiing are incredibly boring, old, and becoming a thing of the past (eg, RACING... oldschool european skijumping, etc etc) Respect is for those who earn it, at least when it comes from me.

Horseshit. It doesent take any balls to wear a skin suit, it takes the desire to SHOW off your balls. What takes balls is going fast/racing/pushing it on ungroomed backcountry terrain.. not gatesmacking on a groomed down carpetted piste. You'd like to think it takes that much balls... not really. I was a racer kid; its definatly overrated id say.

I agree with you... at times morality tends to be rather loose amongst YOUTH IN GENERAL. Racer kids tend to be the most stuck up, asswipes there are; I find there worse to hang out with these days then most parkrat kids... Dont confine petty assholry to the newschool stereotype! Yes it would be a positive thing to see twinners be the friendlist sort on the hill, but I really do think people are people. Im not saying its *not* wrong to do such horrible things as you mentioned (steal), but people are people. Read Thomas Hobbes; people are driven by self interest, and will do whatever they can to benifit themselves in absence of authority. You checking lift passes= authority. No authority = people steal. Its a fact of life, and its not just 'twin tippers' that do it.

I see this all the time in Ontario. I took my level 2 CSIA at Beaver Valley, and made careful note of how roughly 1/3 of the class didnt even buy a liftticket because they figured they wouldent get busted. These are professional ski instructors who are suppost to have respect for the industry! I also talked to one of the local instructors, and they mentioned that terrain theft is quite common as the club doesent check member badges often..

what the first poster said make sens..also, dont complaint that the park is bad if you dont pay to ride..how are they suppose to have money to have a descent park if morons like you dont pay..
also, be careful, if you ride with no ticket, if ever something happen, the hill is not responsible..

you could be dying in the bottom of the park or in the landing of a jump and the patrollers would not have to take you down..
try to rip them off by tryng to get a free ticket, but dont ride without a ticket..its just really stupid.

Mabye on the chairlift yeah.. but most injuries happen on hill and are covered by a waiver for the most part. Chances are the resort wouldent reemburst you for damages if you broke something on the hill, alot of legal precident there.

I never steal from the small mom and pop resorts, but when I go to Northstar and pay $57 for a lift ticket, I have no problem drinking two powerades and eating a hamburger without paying. Corporate resorts have way too much money.

Go ahead and steal, but I suck at it and always get caught, and the people who get to complain about terrain are the season pass holders. I think that any day in the park is a good day, but as I said before, I will still bitch and moan. I hate ski patrol people who get hurt about slow zones. If you have to go through them I will go as fast and backwards as I damn well please.

^they are overpriced ya, but that still doesn't give you the right to steal, if you don't wanna pay then bring your own lunch from home. And he's totally right about there are lots of different kinds of styles and just cause we ski backwards doesn't mean we're any better or racers are any worse or people who just go to enjoy the scnerey, we're all doing the same thing in a slightly different way with a slightly different purpose but the love of it is still there in everyone

im w/ the patroler. fuck you to that guy above who gets pissed when he lands on someone. how bout u make sure the landing is clear, and not just assume everyone hinks u are god and will remove themselves from your path. u are what that guy is talking about. and if i had to choose between racer skills or jibber skills, racing owns. they can actualy ski. i wanna see some of u pussies rip gates, ill bet money that u cant, and youe excuse is 'its gay.' whatever. since when is going fast gay? u just cant do it. i hope u have fun when u are older and cant jib, and u are confined to the tiny hills cuz u never learned how to arc a turn, doucebags.

^^^^just start skiing at stratton. To get into the big park this year, you will have to go into a 'training center' to learn proper park edikit.(how do ya spell edikit anyways?) this will eliminate the riff raff in the park, no ski school, no old yuppies, no joe bags. you will get a special pass that will get you into the park, no pass=no access to park. simple.

what the fuck is up with people saying if your a jibber you cant ski all mtn, most kids who ski park like to hit up other shit to and just cause they don't like racing doesnt' mean someone can't ski all around, also the stuff just mentioned on people being in the landing, its called a landing for a reason, u land there, its not used to sit your ass down and do whatever, so i dont' see how u can say that if someone just sitting in a landing area gets hit, that the person hitting the jump is at fault, thats a bunch of shit

actualy overtime knows what he is talking about. must park yuppies cant ski at all, they can jump, but they cant ski. I would love to see some of you attemp to arc some nice turns, more then likely you cant, you just throw them sideways.

listen, anyone can ski the whole mountain. I see 5 year olds snowplowin down the steepest trail on the mountain all the time. but it takes skill to do it correctly. if it doesnt then how come racers train for years and years to get to the top.

and dont bash racing, most of the pros out there today came from a racing background. And do you know who i give the most props to? Jon Olsen. He still keeps his fis points alive buy entering a race here and there. I cant remember where the artical is but he says that he would much rather win any world cup, then a freestyle event. it takes years and years of training to win a world cup, yet jon got to where he is in less then 2.

find that artical, read it, then say your opinion!!

my assumptions are made up of what i see, not what i hear. I see that most of the people that are skiing the park have absolutly no clue how to 'ski.' I could give a flaming fuck about what i hear on this site. Just a question, but how many hours of gate training under your belt do you have? How many hours have you skied with a coach who has givin you pointers?

Well, look. The people who you were describing as having no respect and acting completely wreckless are NOT 'twin-tippers' in general, but rather kids; the youth.
Sure, there are alot of asshole skateboarders, snowboarders, freeskiers, rollerbladers, surfers, and any sport for that matter. Realize that 95% of those assholes in each sport are the younger kids. The majority of older twintippers and snowboarders have a great deal of respect.

It begins with the youth and instead of parents just bitching about it, why don't they bring change - starting at their home, their kids.
Teach them respect.

As for most of your comments about ripping off mountains and complaining about the park, I agree.

to reply to vtriper, you may be right about some of the parkrat kids they can't ski the rest of the mountain, but you know what, who cares. they're having fun and to them being in taht park all day or session taht rail....to them that's skiing. SKiing has so many faces and can appear in so many ways and apeal to so many different people it doesnt matter where or what they're doing. all that matters is that they're out there having fun

vtrider - i can't count the hours (or dollars) i've spent on training and races. a better estimate would be the 6 years i have been racing competitively, or the 3 i have raced zone.
I'm not trying to boast, but i just wanna show you shouldn't make assumptions.
and yea, i'm sure there are plenty of parkrats that cant ski. but i've seen plenty of 'racers' that couldn't ski either.

Saying your not a true skier if you can't ski the whole mountain is stupid. Just because someone can't or doesnt choose to ski everywhere doesnt mean they suck or anything. Like papa said its all for fun.

Skiing switch through slow zones is just plain fun.

a)park rats on 150 cm skis who are 6'2 are still true skiers.
b) Why dont i stereotype ski patrol. They suck at skiing, slip the pow, destroy jump ons for rails by popping spreads off the side, and fuck around with your din if buy some stroke of misfortune you wind up on the chair with them. They then go ahead and complain because they cant sit on thier ass all day now that kids are getting hurt in the park. PATROLLERS, SKI HILLS ARENT SAFE. So make a bigger park and stop bitching about it, so kids dont get bored of it and start burning down your groomers switch and hucking blind off lips.

I don't mind it so much that some kids in the park can't ski(well), it's the fact that they might be able to do some better tricks than you or someone else and they say they are a better skier, when all they can do is jump and jib yet they have a hard time skiing alone. Some of those kids tend to have gorilla steeze, I know that tanner hall can ski, but gorilla steeze is his style, some kids out there tend to ski gorilla steeze because they can't ski at all, they are just trying to balance on the skis untill they get to the jump.

You guys are right park and pipe alone is skiing, but if that kid can land a bigger trick than another kid that can lay an arc can, the kid that can do the trick is not a better skier, just a better jumper. and vtrider i think it's ediquitte or something like that.

ok i didn't read but everyone else said, but i would steal all sorts of shit shit if i was a kid that saves all his money to go skiing. stratton charges 70something dollars for a ONE DAY adult ticket. that's a rediculous about of money for 9 hours of fun. then you get hungry, no big deal all you have to do is PAY 9 DOLLARS FOR CHICKEN THAT PROBABLY ISN'T EVEN REAL AND HAS BEEN IN A FREEZER FOR 20 DAYS SINCE IT'S BEEN SHIPPED FROM EAST BUMBLEFUCK. it's rediculous.

there are ways to get around it though. buy tickets from people in the village. sleep in parking lots. it's not wrong to get around paying prices.

All of you people need to calm down... first off the stereotype of jibbers who cant do shit but hang in the park is completely off. THere are a few who this holds true for, but nearly everyone I've met in the park who have any skill at all can ski pretty well all over the mountain. And there's no need to disrespect racers... it isn't an easy thing to do and deserves just as much respect and recognition as jibbing... but just to argue both sides... some of you say how there are lots jibbers who can't do shit but jib... same holds true for racers. I raced and skiied bumps for 6 years out east. There were so many racer kids who couldnt do anything but carve a turn and ski gates, put them in pow or on a technical line or in a pipe and they would be lost. I dunno... I don't get why everyone feels teh need to rag on everyone else... in the end, WE ARE ALL SKIIERS. It's all skiing. Just respect everyone. And yeah there are always gonna be people who are dicks, but they exist in every discipline of the sport. It's just like the rest of the world... There are a ton of assholes out there... but they don't just come in one shape, sex, size, color, or creed. It's all skiing... learn to respect one another

I havent read anythign here, Honestly dont care too. But, There is ANOTHER attitude that kind of pisses me off that people should leave at home. And its the attitude about jibbing. I do both ski big mtn and jib. But from alot of lets say 'different generation' people or powder skier only folk, they lay hate down on alot of jibbers...I personally love both, and think both sides jibbers and big mtn...hek even people skiing groomers should all forget there bullshit attitudes and ski because it is really fun to ski...sorry this comes after a few comments about 'doing jumps' I overheard.

this thread has been quite interesting to read. I ski in Virginia, and there is no such thing as powder. I have skied it 4 times in my life. I suck at, i won't lie, so I have to suffice with some pathetic park. It is fun, and I will admit I am not the best all around skis. All I know is I have fun :)

^ Very well said. This thread started out about respect and now it is debating whether or not jibbers can 'actually' ski. It doesn't matter your ability, as long as you have respect for others and other disciplines. Obviously, racers race because they like it. People slide rails because they like it. If you cannot respect someone doing something they like, you have a serious problem.

i came within inches of some ugly snowboarder chick who was standing on the landing looking uphill... Needless to say her even uglier boyfreind chased me away with an even uglier fist and I went home and cried to my ugliest mom.

dude, watch out for little kids on the landings?? how the fuck am i supposed to see the landing as im approaching the jump. and once again, there is nothing i would love more than go to alaska and ski some huge lines, but i cant, not yet. Instead i do what i find the funnest with what i have, here in the middle of michigan. so ya know what, if u dont like what i do, fuck off, cuz somebody else does

vtrider hit it on teh dot....there are alot of ppl who ski park and can't actullay ki...mst can bu there are alot that can;t...skiing is way more important then just being able to do park

huckster, how about, liek i said before, not assuming that everyone thinks u r god, and making sure the landing is clear, do something like pay attention to whoever went b4 u, or watch to see if some lost kid is hanging out back there. not to hard, ive never hit anyone before, and i log a shit load of days. dont be an asshole

Wow, I can see kind of what everyone means. Most skiiers usually dont like snowboarders, not meaning the people, because most of my friends are snowboarders, but the whole way that they act and are. (or what I think of, I know that the roots of the sport were not like this, just goes along of what I have seen and been exposed to, just the 'rebel I hate skiiers' state of mind.)But as everyone shifts around I could see how you might make the same actions as a 'snowboarder'

Oh well, I like to have fun when I go skiing, Racing is real fun, Moguls are really fun too, and the pipe gives you a great feeling. Everything is fun. Thats what I do when I go to a mountian.

This doesnt really have much of a thing to go with this thread, but after reading what everyone said it got me thinking.
