WHAT MAKES A BRAND OR SHOP "CORE"?

The term "CORE" is used a lot in our culture refering to certain brands or shops.   I have noticed that "CORE" is a loose term and means different things to different people.

WHAT MAKE A BRAND OR SHOP CORE TO YOU?

well they keep their business within the ski industry. like nike they make tons of stuff so technically if you buy some skiing stuff from them the money of your purchase could go to another department not supporting skiing which is kinda dumb if you ask me. you want to see your money go to other skiing thing to further their research and development to make better products for yourself and other skiers and maybe new products for skiers.

i see any ski shop as core when i can find pretty much every single ski that ive ever heard of available for purchase at their shop.

Dont get it wrong, not all of us care about this mythic "core" aspect. As with anything, a shop or ski companies likability is based on their suck factor. A low suck factor being a good thing, and a high suck factor being a bad thing.

I am stoked on all your thoughts and viewpoints.  I think that any brand or shop who business practices support the health and well-being of our culture is core.  There are some brands out there who have amazing pro teams and make good product, but they don't care about the ski and snowboard culture.  They are just trying to suck as much money out of it as they possibly can.  I think that it important to support brands and shops who positivly impact ski and snowboard.  The surf culture does this, and we should as well.

yeah for real, but always keep in mind that a lot of those core companies don't make it, but if the bigger companies such as DNA focused in on making a product that was completely designed by the riders like the core companies, than i believe the success would be much greater, and you wouldn't be focusing on just the money and you would be CORE!

Now doubt Schlop, but its like I said its not a question of "Cool' it is a question of "Core".  "Cool" is about the brands product, "Core" is about its actions.

Armada is so COREEEEE......well if by core you mean made by Atomic ( one of the largest ski brands in the world)

Line is so CORE.......well they are made by K2

Core is just a word made up by small and upcoming ski companies to make all you kids feel bad about buying skis from guys like salomon. Honestly i think any kid who shops for a ski that is core......is an idiot.
Its like those kids who buy Burton to be a badass snowboard that is SUPER different from everybody else on the hill.

You schould buy a ski for the ski and good customer service........not for the brand. I bought early armadas because the skis felt sold, and had the best flex.......not be because of tanner, or the way the company is owned.

I agree with you.  I am not as fired up as you about the whole term, but I do think it is the most overly used yet completely undefined word used in the action sports world today.  It is a term that has so much impact on a brand yet there is no consistency with its usage.  As evidenced here, everyone gives their own explanation of it and there are multiple versions of "core".

How does anyone in this thread know what the motivations behind someone elses business?  Burton has started a ton of programs and initiatives to get kids into their sport and to help sustain its success.  How is that not "core" by the definition that most of you have used?  They have completely shunned skiing in every aspect of their business, essentially cutting the market in half in order to focus on the half that they support.  How is that not "core"?  I think the issue here is that "core" all too often gets used to describe a fledgeling business who refuses to make adjustments to market demand and changing trends.  They are "core" because they are not selling-out to success?  Whereas a business that has adapted and grown 1 step ahead of the curve throughout their entire existence ends up losing its "core" labeling and becomes lame because it is successful.  It is one of the reasons that these "core" business come and go so often.   So few of them actually have the business savvy or know-how to see the writing on the wall.

At the end of the day a lot of people dream of working for themselves in a field that they love.  But there are really tough choices to make when that dream involves feeding your family and taking care of the people who have put so much into your business.  I think "core" is an unfair term to throw around because unless you sit on that Board of Directors, you do not know the motivations behind these company's choices.

Sorry to rant, I just needed to get that out...

Armada contracts Atomics factory to make there skis, they are not run by Atomic, Armada is it's own independent company.

Line is made by k2, the compnay Line Skis is run under K2 Sports, that is true, Line is not an independent company like Armada, 4frnt, Ninthward.


i think the better word than core is Independent, because typically its describing the same thing

core is a good thing most of the time but  there are companys that might not be  " core " like salomon that keep getting better

even if some money from skiing might not go back into skiing mabye some money from salomon snowboarding or hiking is going into skiing

salomons stuff is always getting better and they produce some of the best skis and outerwear on the market so im not really worried about them not being " core "
