What could this be

so i was driving and all of a sudden the engine cuts out, and so i try to give it some gas, but nothing happens. so i start to pull over, all the dash lights come on, and the power steering and anti lock brakes go out. anyone know what would cause this.
i was thinking that maybe the tranny, but the engine wouldn't turn over so i think that it might be something else.

oh the car is a 2001 hyundai accent with 96k miles on it. 1.6L engine and automatic

possibly an auto body shop would know, just a thought......ns is full of 14 year old skiers, not car mechanics who are also doctors, politicians, and pornstars....

first thing that comes to my mind would be timing related. Did the car make any noise at all when it happened?


If it is the timing belt, pray to whatever god you choose that you have a non-interference engine

true true. but i do know some skiers that know some random ass shit.

its kinda late to call any shops, cuz here its 12:30. just thought that maybe someone might know

nah there was no noise or jolt. i dont think its a belt, cuz there all there. also nothing was smoking or creating a stench.

Out of gas? That's the only time I've had power steering and stuff cut out like you described.

assuming that Hyundai is cheap... and uses the same engine in all it's line then you might just be fucked, a little searching let me know that you Have an interference engine, meaning DO NOT, I say Again DO NOT try to turn the engine over.

Assuming that it is what I think it is (the Timing Belt Tensioner, or the belt itself) you could cost your self a shit ton of money. Basically because your engine is interference, if the TB breaks and the timing is off, the valves will hit the pistons causing them to bend and all but FUBAR your head. Also since it is a serpentine belt it'll run the accesories like Power steering as well.

Well, since gas not getting to the engine would effectively be the same as being out of gas, my guess would be yes.

if you broke a fuel line you'd have gas on the ground around you from the crack in the line.

everything around the engine looked normal, there wasn't any belts broken or lying on the ground. i couldn't see any leaking fluids on the ground. so i'm just like shit.
but would the timing belts just cut out like that cuz they should have been changed when i bought the car at 88k miles, and i don't think that they only last like 8k miles.

Back with the belts, did you try and move them at all?? I'm still thinking that it's the TB because it's the only reason I can think of that all the dash lights should come on and that most if not all accessories will fail (since you have a serpentine belt)

It is possible that you didn't snap the belt or tensioner, but that some teeth on the belt broke off, which would give it the appearance that it looks fine and also would not cause any loud noises.

Anyways have you ever had your TB replaced along with the tensioner, it's supposed to be done around 75k (at least with Audi's) but I would assume it to be the same with all interference engines

it came from a dealer.
i've looked and it seems that the make does have alot of tranny problems, but i'm hoping its not that cuz thats alotta cash that i don't have.

yeah, but the tranny wouldn't effect the Power steering or the brakes, if the car suddenly locked into a gear then I would lean toward tranny, but I'm still thinking that this is something to do with the engine.

idk. both do cost a shit ton, but i'll find out at the mechanic on monday. i was just wonderin if anyone could point me in the right direction.

but i'm with you on the engine being the problem. i just wish i knew what would have caused it cuz like one second i'm driving, and i go to accelerate, nothing happens, and then i lose steering and brakes. hopefully its some random wire that broke or something, and will be like a replace this wire and its all good.

for your sake I hope so, a rebuilt head (at least on an Audi will run you 2500+, easy if someone else does it)

If it does end up being the TB, I'd go look at all your papers and see if you can find when the TB was replaced, or if it wasn't I would take up a complaint against the dealer for selling you a car that was 1) past it's suggested maintenance interval on that item 2) not informing you of such a problem 3) not fixing it in the first place, or even if it was replaced I would go to the dealer and complain because for it to break that quickly would show most likely improper install.

You might be able to get them to cover it, because rebuilding the head will be money for sure. I did read some guys who got lucky though and didn't bend any valves and just had to replace the TB (which on Audi's' run you about 3-400 on parts and about 3-400 on labor for a total of about 7-800 for the whole job)
